Kovac: Harvard e-mail

Hello!

I received the following e-mail a few days ago:

"Thank you for submitting your LL.M. application to the Graduate Program at Harvard Law School. The Graduate Program Admissions staff is currently reviewing your file. We will make sure to contact you should we require additional documents."

...

"Occasionally, we may request additional materials pertaining to your application (for example, original foreign language versions of transcripts, if applicable; additional transcript(s) from school(s) you have listed on your CV but not on your application materials); if so, we will notify you via e-mail. Any materials that you submit at our request will not be considered 'late'."

Does it mean that my appication is basically complete or do they send a second mail confirming completeness?

Thanks

This means that your application has been "received" before the last date. Harvard had fixed December 1 as the last date; and November 15 as the preferred date for submission of all documents. They are reviewing your application and they would some more information / documents, they will e-mail you. The information / documents sent by you in response to their e-mail, even after it is post December 1, shall not be considered late.

You will receive a second e-mail confirming that your application is complete and has been sent to the admissions committee for final decision.

Here is a sample of e-mails I received from one of the schools which confirm that the application is complete :

"Thank you for your application to our LL.M. program for International Lawyers. Your file is now complete and has been forwarded to our admissions committee for a decision. Please allow approximately two to three weeks to complete this process. All decisions are communicated by an initial email letter followed by a hard copy letter that is mailed to the applicant. Please understand that we cannot inform anyone of admissions decisions over the phone."

We expect to be in contact with you soon. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you.

I have received the same e-mail and since then I have been wondering about it.

In previous years, Harvard's e-mails were different and they sent another e-mail to confirm completeness. My guess is they will send us another e-mail to acknowlegde completeness. Sometimes, however, this may take weeks or even a couple of months.

I guess there is no way to know. However, look at this answer provided by LLM_06 about two years ago concerning the same issue. I think it pretty much addresses your question. Hope it helps!

"I have been wondering about this. There are two possible answers. First, they can think that it is our responsibility to ensure that all documents arrive properly and timely. They are just trying to help letting you know that you application is incomplete, but was not their obligation to notify you. If they do not think that way (and I hope not), they will probably take into consideration the fact that one did not have time to complete the missing parts of the application in due time, since they were very slow in notifying the applicants. Therefore, if a document arrives just after the deadline, they will probably consider the date in which the application with the forms, personal statement, etc, arrived".

Although i sent my application three weeks ago, I've still not received any e-mail from Harvard.
Since my letter comes from France, it should have taken approximatively one week to arrive...
Anybody is in the same case, or should I be worried about it?

Thx

Do not worry! Remember that they are receiving a lot of packages these days. They should be writting to you soon to let you know if your application is complete or not. I got a confirmation e-mail like 3 weeks after the application was sent and that was back in early November when they're not too busy. In ny case, write to them! they'll answer your query timely (at least that was my case...)

On checking my LSAC account I found that Harvard had requested for a report on November 28 but till date LSAC has not sent the report. It means the file will be compelted only when Harvard receives LSAC report.

In some cases I have seen that LSAC has taken months to sent its report which is quite disturbing.

Any one of us having similar disturbing experience with LSAC ?

I had a similar situation with LSAC. I wrote to them and they reply the following:

"Thank you for contacting the LL.M. Credential Assembly Service.

I have confirmed that Harvard retrieved your report electronically on the same date that it was requested (Nov 5). Harvard has chosen to suppress the printing & mailing of paper reports by LSAC. At present, this option prevents our system from displaying the report date, but we are working to change that. In any event, you may be assured that Harvard has your report.

If you need anything additional, please contact us at LLMinfo@LSAC.org".

I hope this information helps you.

I submitted my application on the 13th of November. I am not aware whether Harvard sends e-mails indicating that materials are misssing or not. What I've heard though is that the "complete application notification" might arrive with considerable delay given the fact that they receive 1500-2000 applications each year. In any case, what I've learned from my brief experience with applications is that if you're sure that you've sent everything that was on the checklist, then there is no reason to worry. Otherwise, we will all go nuts until the end of March that is when the decisions are out. Trust me, you don't have to worry. If you've double checked what you've put into the envelope that you mailed, then there is no reason to worry. Harvard will notify you soon or later.

Everybody who did apply within the deadline should receive the 2nd email.
In addition, I've been told that receiving it has nothing to do with being admitted or rejected it is just a confirmation that your file is complete and ready to be reviewed.
So, it is just a matter of days before you will find the above posted message in your inbox (providing that, as I'm sure of, you have submitted correctly all the application materials).

Thanks so much Miki for your answer,

I’m worried because I applied since October, and no 2nd mail yet (a lot of applicants who applied later than me, already received the second e-mail).

I guess I have to wait a little more.

Hi guys,

I'm at Harvard right now. I just thought I'd second JW's post: nothing that happens right now (1st email, 2nd email, or lack of either) says anything about the liklihood of your success or failure. At this stage no decisions will have been made. And it will be mid to late March before you hear anything.

You have my sympathies - its such an unpleasant process. I thought that posting this message might at least settle your nerves.

Best of luck to everybody!

Thanks for your help.

Hope you are right because there is no way to know what’s happening in HLS.

No e-mails, no sign of any kind.

Does HLS send e-mails of admission, or we have to wait for an official letter?

In the last few years they have first sent an e-mail to all those who have been accepted, and this is then followed up with a FedEx package. Those who are not accepted are sent a letter informing them of this (but they don't receive any e-mail).

I believe they send the e-mail because they release the decisions as soon as the process is complete and they realise the FedEx will take a while to arrive.

It really is just a waiting game I'm afraid. Let me know if you have any more questions though.

Hey specialK,

I understand that your at Harvard right now.. Although this may be a very subjective and vague question with possibly no concrete answer to it.. However since the persistent wait is quite unbearable, I thought I'd pop it anyway...

1. How can one evaluate his/her chances of getting into HLS? and
2. Would cracking through about 4-5 top 14 law schools so far speak of the strength of ones application and thus attaching a significant chance at cracking HLS?

The first to say is that I in no way speak for Harvard, so any thoughts I have to offer are purely my own, based on my experience.

And I'm afraid that it is rather difficult to respond constructively to (1). I suppose anything I say will repeat what you probably already know - your chances are higher with stronger academics; strong references; broad extra-curricular experience (American schools place a lot of emphasis on this), a undegraduate/graduate degree from a strong school in your home country (understandably Harvard looks more favourably on degrees from higher ranked schools); an insightful and clear personal statement (i.e. a sense of where the LLM fits into your career plans and a clear indication of what you want to get it from it, intellectually); a cogent and articulate essay (applications are reviewed by faculty in addition to admissions staff, so they will be looking for interesting ideas and strong writing ability).

From my own informal observations (i.e. gauging inductively from my yeargroup) it seems the following things also really help: a supreme court clerkship in your own country (in the welcome address Dean Kagan boasted about the number of LLM's who had completed clerkships); participation (and ideally success) in a prestigious competition (e.g. Jessup); and strong non-academic dimension to your resume (whether sport, music, drama or something else which shows that you are likely to be an interesting person to have around).

Bear in mind that there are people here who have all and none of these things. And once again these are just my thoughts.

As regards (2), of course that is a good sign, but likewise not determinative. For my part thats how it worked - I was accepted by everwhere else and then by HLS. But I was still quite shocked when the news came in.

I'm sorry the process is so long. I hope this information helped a little. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Thanks a lot for having shared your own experience with us...I am also still wiating for a reply from HLS. What I really would like to know is how much TOEFL actually inflenced the choice? Since u did not mention it I was wondering whether a student with strong academics, letters of references and work experiences (even abroad) but with a low TOEFL has a change to be admitted or not? As a matter of fact, I personally believe to have all the things you mentined in your post but the TOEFL (which is lower than requested)...Do u think that I still have a chance?
Thanks a lot?

Apologies for not mentioning TOEFL, which I know is a factor. Unfortunately I can't offer any advice on that for the reason that I am a native English speaker. I really don't know the first thing aout TOEFL - sorry :-(

You reminded me about work experience too - lots of the LLMs have a few (and in some cases 8 or 9) years of work experience. That can only count in your favour. But it certainly is not a prerequisite - I have none (other than internships).

One final thing I forgot to mention, which is widely known I'm sure, is that it matters to some degree which country you are from. Whilst, as I understand it, there is no formal system allocating certain numbers of places to certain countries, it will help if there are fewer applicants from you country. This is for the obvious reason that the program is meant to be international (there are around 60 countries represented in the current LLM yeargroup). They therefore will not admit too many people from one country. So essentially you need first of all to be in the top few of the applicants from your country, and then hope that they like you enough to include you in the 150.
