Hellooo ppl...Mon Dec 03, 2007 03:20 PM I am from India and have been in the profession for 3 yrs now. Today morning only I got a call from Georgetown, but am still in two minds of accepting it as I do not know how good is Georgetown for corporate laws. One of my friends in CLS just infomed that all that sells in the US market for interntaional students is "Yale, Harward, Stanfors, NYU, CLS, UPENN, Chicago......but unfortunately Georgetown, Fordham and like others are not safe for investing so much money in". The same has been confirmed by a few more ppl I know working or having studied in US. I am not saying that Georgetown is not a good school...it def is... but the big question is that good for investing so much money in..specially when they do not have any scholarships/ grants etc ? (Do they ?) Also I am eagerly waitig for admission decissions for NYU, CLS, UPENN and Duke. I applied for all in early review...any idea when the decisions are out ? More particularly I applied for NYU@NUS mostly in the hope of getting a tution waiver. ( most students got upto USD 35000 year). The admission decision is pending for there too. I have heard mixed reviews abt NYU@NUS and specially it not being recognised outside Asia. Is it worth it to save a considrable amount of money for this program ? I am sure I will get more than plentiful info from all you guys for my qs. Cheers. |

Hi KVCMon Dec 03, 2007 06:10 PM The Georgetown too sells good in US Markets; I am told that after LL.M also the job market for a graduate from Georgetown is very lucrative. Until you get an offer from any other higher law school, this offer is worth considering. The amount required is really not a toll comensurate the benefits. |

I think Georgetown's ranking for Tax program is ranked up there (#3? after NYU (1) and UF (2)). I also heard that they have job fairs within the year in Georgetown (i'll bet they have that too, in other schools), so that you can apply for a job even when you're not done with the degree, and might have a job waiting for you after. I hope I get the same good experience, too.Tue Dec 04, 2007 04:46 PM I got admitted for GT's tax program. What would you consider a "higher school"? I assume that there's a lot of room (I hope!) for jobs for graduates from varied schools? |

Dear all,Tue Dec 18, 2007 11:42 AM I'm also an international student applying for LL.M. 2008. Glad to know that there are many people like me working on the application stuff. :D I applied to eight schools, including Georgetown, Penn, Duke and Northwestern. But as for Georgetown, it seems that I'm rejected since I'm not able to log in the admitted students website. (sigh) Anyway, nice to meet u all and good luck! |

KVC, did you apply for Georgetown Securities? I took a look at their curriculum. It looked very interesting! I wouldn't mind taking a few of those subjects myself.

To ferarg: There is a group for LLM students admitted to Georgetown (and other univs such as NYU, Columbia, Harvard etc.) at www.lawyrs.net/llmguide/25 -- you can get in contact with the members of that group if you join.

Enjoy your holidays as I am sure you all will be accepted to more than one LL.M. At the end the important thing is not which university sends you an offer but to come here and get your LL.M. Any of the top 20 is just fine! Just don't make the mistake of deciding where to go for its name but check it is really what will suit you.

I am pity confused.....Its like this:Sun Dec 30, 2007 05:00 PM I am an Indian and want to pursue my LLM in US. Considering the big amount of money involved...I really wonder whether its worth it. Its like everyone knows that...that even if an International Applicant does an LLM it doesnt guarantee a job in US. In fact it is very difficuly and uncertain to get a job there until and unless you have done ur JD from a US law school. So what exactly does a US LLM give u in return..besides of corse the exposure etc. I mean I am not denying that all that is very important but we cant deny the fact that somone like me who will be going on a loan...needs to secure the monitory returns too. (Though know I am begining to feel that I dont want to work in US, but would prefer the east....Australia etc. therefore an LLM for Austrlia or NYU@NUS, which is much more affordable seems to work better for my needs) I am sure a lot of international applicants like me would have thought about this too....... Pls advise.... |

KVCMon Dec 31, 2007 12:09 AM I understand your dilema which is quite common. first the cost : many of the good schools in USA consider candidates for scholarships that take care of the tuition or least a major part of it; secondly, the cost is easily recovered when you work as an intern for one year during OPT. third and most important: it strenghens candidate's skills for whole of life; this one year experience will be useful throughout the career in candidate's home country. If you have strong net working skills, the entire cost can be recovered during first one or two years of law practice in India after LL.M from USA. |

I am repeating a question I had asked earlier to other fora..Mon Dec 31, 2007 11:17 AM I have offers from NYU@NUS with $35K award, and Columbia in the early review without any fin aid. For NUS I need to put together just 16K, but for columbia I need maybe 70K, mostly loan. I have 2 yrs exp, am well placed in India. But if I take up Columbia I need to work in US or Europe to repay the loan. What would be my chances for this? Will I get a decent job at all in US? (Not only money, I am particular about the quality of job/firm) And, what would be an optimal choice for me? I have apps pending with Harvard, and Cambridge too. I am not applying anywhere else. |
