Hi

I'm not totally sure that this is the right place for my question but I'm going for it anyway. I am currently studying for a degree in law (LLB) in the U.K. but I do not want to practice here. I would ideally like to practice in Australia, but I don't know what qualifications I need, for example over here we need to complete the Legal Practice Course (LPC), and my main query is whether or not I would have to do the LPC before moving to Australia or would I do an equivalent course over there and if so, what course?

Thanks
Steve

Hi,

To practise in Australia you will need to fulfill academic + practical requirements.

Depending on which State in Australia you want to practise, you will have to send in your qualifications to the relevant authorities for assessment. A classmate of mine (who is a UK graduate) was require to complete constitutional law + administrative law to fulfill the academic requirements. She was required to complete the entire Practical Legal Training (which could be done in 0.5 yrs) for admission into Queensland. However, I have heard New South Wales is more generous towards granting exemptions towards Practical Legal Training - requiring only a few subjects in addition.

My suggestion would be to complete your Practical Legal Training in Australia. If you need more assistance, drop me a message.

Regards
Greg

Hi, im currently practising law in Malaysia having been called to the Malaysian Bar in 2000.

My LLB is from the UK and i completed my CLP ( Local Malaysian Bar exam) after my degree following which i was called to the Bar after my puppilage.

Ive been thinking of practising in Australia more particulary in Brisbane as my wife is from there. My question is, if i wanted to practise in Australia, would i have to sit for any if at all local Bar exams? if so, would i have the benefit of any exemptions having practised for nearly 7 years in a commonwealth country.

Please advise, thanks
