Guys, I just posted my college deposit for Balliol College, Oxford, today, and I though we might set up a thread for those intending to go to Oxford, like people admitted to Harvard have already done on this board. It could be of particular use given the fact that, unlike US schools, Oxford, to the best of my knowledge, has no web forum for admitted students.Wed Apr 13, 2005 11:02 PM So, have decided to go to Oxford: Zelda - Balliol Shiv - StCatz Who else? |

Hi Zelda,Thu Apr 14, 2005 12:15 PM i think it is a great idea to start an online forum for Oxon students. BTW st.catz has not asked me to provide any deposit amount. is it that some colleges require a deposit and some others dont? cheers shiv |

Hi Priya,Thu Apr 14, 2005 12:26 PM I think shell is a merit based scholarship and not a need based one . hence your financial guarantee form should not influence the outcome of your scholarship application. I may be completely wrong but this is what I think! shiv |

Hi there Priya 'n shiv!Thu Apr 14, 2005 01:05 PM One little correction: I didn't send the fin guarantee yet, I only posted the deposit for accomodation. Apparently, some colleges require it (like mine), some don't. You obviously won't need to pay the deposit if you want to live out of college. And I don't think my sending J200 for accomodation could be considered as proof that I have money to pay for the whole of my education ^) I haven't sent the fin guarantee form yet - my deadline for it is 1 September. |

I just got my first choice college offer today - Christ Church. Sigh - so expensive!! But I love that college - magnificent architecture and what with Harry Potter and all!

Fri Apr 15, 2005 05:34 PM hi zelda shiv, I come from Russia, so that's a good point about the visa. My deadline for the fin guarantee form is 1 September, and I don't know how soon I will submit it, since I will be going on a scholarship and I am not sure which one precisely. But I would definetely prefer to get the documentation for the visa asap, before they all go on holiday. I'll try and investigate where we should get it from - college or law faculty. If you learn smth about it, pls let now. |

Guys, in case anybody is facing the visa issue, like me: enrollment letters are provided by ur college. Mine was actually very helpful. Just make sure u know the exact requirements of the UK consulate in ur country for long-term visas.

Why Oxford?
Hi Zelda and Joseph1,Thu Apr 21, 2005 02:08 PM If I am not wrong, you have been admitted both to Oxford and Cambridge. Could you explain why you have decided for Oxford? Is is the scholarship or the program or something else that has been the decisive factor. I have an offer from Oxford and Cam as well and am just curious. Thanks, Gregory |

1) scholarship - I had to accept or decline Oxford's scholarship by 15 April, whereas Cam has not made any decisions on its scholarships yet and is going to make them only by June.Thu Apr 21, 2005 03:28 PM 2) tutorials - Ox offers some, though not many, whereas Cam has none. Current Ox Mjur students have said these are really helpful. |

Re: Admitted to Oxford
Hey Gregory,Fri Apr 22, 2005 12:50 AM I'm in the same boat (also choosing from Columbia and NYU) but leaning towards Oxford. The main reason is the reputation of the course (BCL) and for private law generally. What subjects are you going to do? Are you MJur or BCL? Do MJur students take BCL subjects or only the regular subjects? |

Re: Admitted to Oxford
Gregory, to amplify on my previous comment,Fri Apr 22, 2005 05:14 AM I think the most important thing for me, when it comes down to it, is funding. However, I think I might have to make a decision before I can finalise my funding options at each uni respectively. As such, I think that the BCL has a better reputation than the LLM. Unless Oxford put me in a terrible colledge, this factor (reputation) will be decisive. When it comes down to it, I think there is not much else to separate the Universities. If I were an MJur student, it would come down to choice of college and which subjects I wanted to do. Most of the subjects I would do are offered at both places. The only thing is that International Commercial Litigation (essentially private international law/conflicts) is not going to be offered at Cambridge next year. |

I have decided on International Dispute Settlement and Global Comparative Financial Law, hesitating about Conflict of Laws, not sure about the fourth course (Company Law? Contracts?)

Re: Admitted to Oxford
Hi,Fri Apr 22, 2005 05:17 PM Thank you Zelda and Joseph1 for your answers. I am from the EU and would be an MJur student at Oxford. I think you are right, Joseph, it comes down to the courses and to the college (apart from funding). I would take up international dispute settlement and banking as well, probably, corporate finance, and external relations of the EU. However, you have prof. Crawford for the dispute settlement course at Cambridge, who is a well respected expert of the topic. I have no college answer from Cambridge as yet. Have you heard anything? |

Re: Admitted to Oxford
Hi, Fri Apr 22, 2005 05:22 PM I have been admitted to Cambridge and still haven't heard from a college - but see the thread "Offers from Cambridge" where some people said that they had heard. I was wondering whether anyone knew whether at Oxford and/or Cambridge, it is automatic that you get into the courses that you want, or whether there is a possibility that the course is too full and that you might not get it? (I know that at NYU, it is a possible that you might not get the courses you want). |

Hi everybody! I got my admission to Oxford on 19th March (great day...). Up to now I haven't received an offer from a college (I applied for Jesus college) but I guess that will take some more days.Fri Apr 22, 2005 05:42 PM I guess that I'll also take the Comparative Financial Law course because I already did some work in banking law. So there are still three choices to make... |

@ Gregory:Fri Apr 22, 2005 06:29 PM Are u sure Corporate Finance is offered in Ox? I think it was only available at Cam. As to International Dispute Settlement, for sure Crawford is mighty well known, but Lowe is as well (although some students find he is a bit too academic) @ NickdiAngelo: Congrats and welcome to our small Oxford-admits online community! :))))) I also did some finance-related work, and, moreover, Prof. Wood, who seems to be teaching both at Cam and Ox, is a leading expert and his classes are said to be brilliant. Does anyone know if Transnational Commercial Law is going to be offered in 2005/2006? As to class availability, there's no students number limit, for what I've heard, but it might be difficult to arrange for a tutor in certain subjects. |

Re: Admitted to Oxford
I have heard that sometimes Constitutional Theory has a limit. Haven't heard of anyone having any trouble with any other subjects.Sat Apr 23, 2005 12:44 AM I am yet to hear from a college at Ox or Cam. But my acceptance letter from Oxford (dated March 15) said I would be hearing from a college in about 6 weeks (around now) so I'm not too worried. |
