Full Scholarship

Nina_A Joined: 25 May 2007 Posts: 31	Full Scholarship Tue Dec 04, 2007 09:17 AM I have never heard or read anywhere that one has ever received full scholarship upon acceptance into a LLM program in the U.S., but I'm not sure about that. Would you let me know whether there are schools in the US which might provided their LLM admitted students with full Scholarships? Have you heard of one? If there aren't I'd appreciate it if you let me know. Thanks. Nina

To name a few, you may visit the web pages of TULANE UNIVERSITY, SMU, UNIV OF ARKANSAS. In one school in OHIO, I have forgotton the name and we can surely find out info from web, they not only offer full scholarship, but also travelling expense from home country to USA. In fact a very extensive search is required to gather complete information.

I already have my admission to the LLM program of Pennsylvania Law School with a $20000 scholarship.However, I still need to have another $41000 for 2008-2009 program. I was speaking to a friend of mine and she suggested that I also apply to some schools which do provide their students with full scholarships. That's why I left that post here. It seems that universities that do offer full scholarships would be lower in ranking. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Do you think if I apply to any of the top ten schools, they might be able to provide me with much more fundings, or you think that $20000 is high for an LLM? Don't you think it's worth studying at Penn with financial difficulty than studying at a university of a lower ranking with full scholarship? Please let me know what you think. Appreciate any response. Thank you very much.

I would probably go there instead of lower ranked schools, if it is feasible moneywise, unless you plan to go back to your home country afterwards, and employers there might consider doing an LL.M. at a slightly lower ranked school almost just as favorable as doing it at UPenn? I know this is the situation in my own country, where employers will be happy about you having international experience and etc. even from a slightly lower ranked school. Now if you want to stay in the U.S. afterwards (for more than a year), I would try to get a degree at the best school you can afford. Good luck. And I know it is possible to get full tuition waivers at several schools. You just gotta look around, and/or talk to alumni.

Upenn has been the only school I have applied to and I haven't applied to other schools.So do you think if I get admissions from other schools (like partial scolarships from top ten and full scholarships from lower ranking ones) and then inform UPenn of my acceptance to those schools, they might increase the merit scholarship they have given me? Also, do you think I'd better send the copy of my Upenn admission letter to the schools I'm going to apply to and tell them that I need full or a better scholarship than UPenn's? Do you think that will be more effective in getting more funding? Thank you very much in advance. Look forward to hearing from you.

hannenyh Joined: 02 Jan 2006 Posts: 215	Full Scholarship Wed Dec 05, 2007 11:51 AM I think this hurt me, because I also only applied to one school, cause I knew they would give me a scholarship, and that living there was very affordable. I feel I could have gotten more had I gotten in to other schools too. But I am not sure how to go about this. I am not the right person to give advice on this.

Gloss Joined: 13 Oct 2007 Posts: 47	Full Scholarship Wed Dec 05, 2007 02:18 PM If I can stop very quick and say something, I would say that you should send an e-mail to other schools, after you applied and was admitted, saying that you want to go there but you need a better scholarship than UPenn gave you to justify (Certainly you need to work this idea and prepare a very nice e-mail). I did this to help my wife getting a scholarship for her MBA and we got it (in a top 20 MBA school). Just make it clear it is not just for the money, but the money is a factor for you. They will understand that.

And ranking does not mean just U Penn. I am not suggesting you to look for Tier 4 schools, though even some of them may also be good. depending upon your GPA in the first law degree and other attending circumstances, there are chances that you may get a handsome scholarship in top 20 law schools in USA which is by no means a small achivement.

Olin Fellowships for Women law.wustl.edu/Admissions/index.asp?id=74 This Univ ranks very high and is practically a part of the Southern Ivy.

nriattorney Joined: 12 Nov 2007 Posts: 225	Full Scholarship Thu Dec 06, 2007 08:51 AM For a good scholarship in USA, you will need (a) a very good GPA in your law degree in India; (b) excellent letters of recommendations from your Faculty; (c) a high TOEFL score (d) preferably some post - degree experience - one or two years. (e) writing sample(s) /Essay writing; (f) statement of purpose. You may start working on your admission immediately after your degree. the steps suggested are : (a) enrol with the local Bar Council and Bar Association; (b) start law practice or join a law school as Adjunct/visiting faculty; (c) enrol with LSAC (d) start preparing essays and SoPs (e) contact your teachers for recommendations. You should start submitting applications in the month of September / October of preceding year.

shayan Joined: 30 Dec 2007 Posts: 65	Full Scholarship Mon Jan 14, 2008 03:21 AM Hi Fulbright also provides full scholarships. I am awarded one of them for the years 2008-2009. The scholarship includes: tuition, books, transportation, accomodation, seminars and even TOEFL test fee!

I was a Fulbright grantee from the Philippines for the school year 2008-2009, but in the end I turned it down in favor of the British Chevening scholarship. In the Philippines, the Fulbright has a cap of US$32,500.00 for ALL expenses (tuition and living expenses). As the top-tier schools will all generally cost around US$60k for tuition and living expenses, it is obvious that a Fulbright scholarship will not be enough. The only way one can be fully covered by the scholarship is if the school itself grants a tuition waiver which covers the balance of expenses not covered by the Fulbright scholarship. In my case, even with a US$20k tuition waiver from Columbia, I would still have had to shoulder US$14,500.00 to cover the balance of expenses (the estimate of total expenses was US$67k). The amount of the Fulbright scholarship may be different in other countries (such as in shayan's), but insofar as the Philippines is concerned, it is not enough to cover the total expenses at top-tier law schools.
