L&E-pil: Columbia decisions

I noticed that last year the first person to receive admission from Columbia within the scope of the regular cycle was notified on the 11th of January. Based on the fact that admissions procedure doesn't change substantially from year to year, I think it is time for those of us who applied through the regular cycle to start waiting for decisions by Columbia University.
I launch this forum for us to post the decisions that we receive from Columbia.
TIP: When you share your admission with the viewers of the forum, please indicate the date you submitted your application and the date you receive an "application complete notification". This would help the rest of us, to understand when our decision will come out.

Humber: Columbia decisions

I applied on the deadline (17.12, I think), with one of my friends running to the post office one minute before closing time to get it sent in time.

Two days ago I received an e-mail from the Office of Graduate Legal Studies, CLS, where they said they would now begin to review my application... So I guess it will still take quite some time for some of us.

I received this notification on December the 7th. Does that mean that I am going to receive their decision sooner than others who received the notification later?

I applied trough the regular cycle (12/12/2007) and received the admission e-mail last Wednesday (1/6/2008). Today I received by Fedex the formal admission letter along with the Admitted Student Handbook.

Curiously, I did never receive the application completion e-mail. I wrote last Wednesday requesting an up-date on my application status and later that same afternoon I received the admission e-mail. However, I don’t know if the admission e-mail had anything to do with me filing the information request.

Mila: I’m Colombian and our grading system is quite different from the American system. My GPA was 4.58 / 5.00. According to the LSAC report the suggested US grades are as follows:

A+ = 5.00 to 4.6
A = 4.4 to 4.0
B = 3.99 to 3.5
C = 3.49 to 3.00
F = 2.99 to 0

Hi, guys, I also got the admission e-mail yesterday! I was really pleased because it was my first admission and Columbia was one of my first choices. FYI, I am an asian lawyer who have several years experience of corporate and governmental litigation and arbitration. I applied through the regular cycle right before the deadline. I have to deposit 500 US$ by Mar 15.

Of course, I am planning to accept their offer, but still waiting for Berkeley's offer before I finally make a decision (I didn't applied to Stanford). I understand that Columbia and NYC is simply the best place for studying transnational litigation and international arbitration, but does anybody have information about Berkeley in this field? I am kind of attracted to Berkeley for their finest weather and surroundings...and NYC's high cost of living somewhat scares me...

Thanks in advance, and for those who are waiting, wish you good luck!!!

Max1

@Max1

FYI, I applied to CLS, UPenn, Berkeley, Northwestern. Even though I considered some other aspects such as superiority of the business law faculty, diversity of the program etc, I must say that I selected schools primarily by general reputations. I didn't appy to HLS and NYU in that I didn't have much time and failed to meet the deadline of these 2 schools. I regret that I lost the opportunity, however, as to NYU, actually their large llm size and selectivity led me to lose interest.

Per international arbitration, I cunsulted to my firm's IP/Arbitration partner who is CLS alumnus. He naturally advised me to go to CLS and told me of some huge guy's name like Smit and Bermann, but in substance nothing more (he graduated long time ago). Therefore, I checked through this site and concluded that even though it might not be the best (compared to HLS), CLS+NYC would be perfect combination. Sorry that I cannot be of any help. Hope you find some useful insights from these old posts.

HI Aishisha,
my TOEFL score is 114, so it was not a problem for me.
However, a friend of mine was admitted to Columbia (and Harvard as well) last year with 107 points, but only 23 in speaking section (I think that the minimum requested is 25); so I don't think TOEFL is a decisive factor as there are more important things (CV, reccommendation, academic results, etc.),

Thanks a lot for your opinions guys!...I guess I have strong CV, strong letters of reference... but my TOEFL, despite my efforts (and the fact that I studied and worked abroad), does not reach at all the minimum required! I am still keeping on studying in order to take the test again before they can make a decision...I do not Know how much they can wait for my new score...by the way, I have the impression that something with the ETS does not work properly...I took the test twice and I thought to have done pretty well..but indeed my scores were terribly low... Did u have similar problem with the toefl test in the past?... U know, I really do not whether continue to hope or start to think at a solution different from beginning my LLM this year!

L&E-pil: Columbia decisions

As far as I am concerned, I don't think that TOEFL plays a major role in the admission process. I don't think Columbia would reject a strong candidate with good qualifications and great potential just because he/she is slightly below the required TOEFL score. I think these universities have intelligent people in their admission committees who know that TOEFL doesn't say much about one's command of the English language. Especially, the speaking section in iBT TOEFL is a mess and everybody knows that. And in the writing section, if you don't have great typing skills, you can't do much even if you your writing is first-class! I think people at Columbia are well aware of these facts and they will emphasize more on the fact that you studied and worked abroad using English for you everyday communication. Consequently, in my opinion you don't have to worry as long as you have good credentials.

I totally agree with L&E-pil. For instance, when I tried the TOEFL in July the microphone wasn't working very well so I thought that I would have performed poorly in the speaking section....to the contrary I got 28.
So I reached the personal conclusion that chance does play a key role with the TOEFL exam and I think that this is widely known by the admission committees of U.S. Law Schools
In the end you still have a lot of chances!

To make things funny.. I took the test in 2006 in NYC when IBT was first starting in the US, my speaking score was 29 and my listening section was only 23. Can I better speak than listen? That's the question that I still cannot answer..:) And it still worked as I got the admission to CLS with this score. So, do not worry too much.

Hi,

Any is there any fresh graduate who has heard from Columbia?

Either conditional offer or otherwise ?

I am a fresh graduate as well, but I haven't heard anything from Columbia yet. It is my personal conviction that fresh graduates, since they are officially not a priority for Columbia Law School, will be the last to be notified on their admission/rejection. This is just my personal view and I have to make clear that it is neither an official policy of CLS nor have I heard it from anyone. Just my way of viewing things.
CLS is probably (once again I'm just expressing my personal thoughts) urged right now to offer admission to promising professionals, which is the "target group" of this school.
CLS wouldn't afford to lose some promising professionals, so by telling them that they have to register until March 10th, meaning before schools like HLS or SLS announce their decisions, it's trying to "attract" them. Thus, fresh graduates would be those who will hear from CLS late April or early May, since CLS wouldn't mind losing them.

The policy of "conditional offer" is common among U.K. universities I think, where applicants tend to apply without having completed their undergraduate studies yet or without having taken the TOEFL. So, the university makes an offers on the condition that you will receive your LL.B. until i.e. June or that you will submit a TOEFL test until i.e. July. Based on Columbia's eligibility requirements, I think "conditional offer" is not possible. Columbia says that you should already hold an undergraduate law degree in order to apply -students in their last year of undergr. studies are not disallowed to apply, but they are obviously discouraged at least in Columbia's case. In any case, a fresh graduate already holds by definition a LL.B., so he would not receive a conditional offer in this case. As far as the TOEFL is concerned, I think that you cannot submit a TOEFL score after the Dec 15th deadline, so a conditional offer, which would urge the applicant to submit a TOEFL score until a certain date otherwise he would lose the offer, is not possible.

I didn't say it wouldn't be useful to take the TOEFL again. My post was the result of pure deductive logic. I wasn't trying to represent the official policy of Columbia, because I don't know what their official policy is. In any case, I would recommend you to take the TOEFL again and send them the results as soon as possible. Columbia is not an administrative authority, where you won't get your job done if you don't have all the essential papers with you. It's a university which wants to attract intelligent and qualified lawyers into it's community. I have to state again, that I truly and deeply believe that if you really have the credentials that Columbia seeks in a candidate, TOEFL wouldn't pose an obstacle for them to offer you a place in the LL.M. program. Thus, if you'd take the test again and submit them the results as soon as possible you would just make their decision easier.
I think I should be worried more than you do, since I am a fresh graduate and I have NO professional experience, which means I'm just out of their target group. That's a disadvantage for Columbia, not a low TOEFL score.

Everyone is anxious right now. And I'm sure everyone has one good reason to be anxious, whether it is the TOEFL score, the lack of professional experience, low grades, bad recommendations, not properly written statement etc. Lawyers are famous for being anxious in general. I would recommend though that you remain calm, as I believe that no applicant's life depends on an admission from a U.S. law school. Of course it is a step forward, a great chance, but I still I don't think it should become a reason to destroy a whole winter (meaning the winter while you wait the decision).

I agree with L&E-pil. Once you have submitted the application there is nothing you can do about it but wait for the answer.

Of course everyone is eager to receive admissions but, as we all know, it is likely that we might get admitted in some schools and rejected in others since the evaluating process is very different in each school.
For instance, I know few people with very good credentials (but different ones from the others) who were rejected by lower ranked schools (i.e. Berkeley or Michigan) but admitted to higher ranked ones (i.e., Columbia and Harvard). So, in the end, the selection process is very subjective and even if you have a poor TOEFL score you may succeed because of other strengths you have.
Good luck

Remember what you sent to the school for application: PS, resume, recommendation, TOEFL and past grades.
The whole thing is a single application and the schools decide what they regard the most. As far as I believe for top LL.M. application, recommedation and past job experience counts the most. Getting a good recommendation from a notable people represents that you're a decent professional and that you've been working really hard.
There's no fact to back my message, but I've been admitted to 5 of theT14 schools (including Columbia, Penn and Duke)with not so great grades.

Well, that's how Columbia works. Completely random. You might be very lucky and have your application reviewed in early January or you might be very unlucky and have your application reviewed in early May. There is no specific timeline. The e-mail can pop up any time.
However, I truly believe that applications of people with many years of professional experience are reviewed first. Fresh graduates are in the worst position in the case of Columbia (I'm pretty sure, I will already have enrolled at another Law School, when Columbia will send out a decision. The same has happened to dozens of applicants in the past.)

I have received a response from Columbia last Friday (February 22), but I think you should'nt worry about this, since the procedure of admission is completely random.

If you have not received your response yet, there is still hope (remember that there are people who have already received a negative answer). Probably they did not finish the process of reviewing your application.

Good luck! I hope to see you in NY.

While they state that they make their decisions on a rolling basis, I'm just wondering if they are actually reviewing the ones with stellar credentials first (admissions), along with the ones who do not meet their minimum standards (ie. rejections and no hope for admissions), and then everyone else in between the top and the bottom applicants.
Any thoughts?

I assume that this is what happens with Columbia. I think they are clever enough to understand that if they answer to someone in early May, he/she will most likely have already registered to another school. So, they know they are loosing this applicant. But they send him/her the admission so late, because they really don't care if he/she doesn't enroll to the Law School finally. Columbia makes sure to send admissions early to the applicants it really wants in it's LL.M. (and sets them the March 10th deadline to accept) and then reviews the application of other people.

Hi hemera,
I think that Columbia is one of the few Law Schools in the U.S. which highly values previous working experience.
As you may read in this thread so far most of the applicants without working experience have not been admitted, but, all the same, they have not been rejected either.
As L&E-pil has correctly pointed out Columbia tend to previously admit applicants with significant experience and if there is still room available the other ones.

Anyway, there are other great law schools (such as UChicago or Michigan) which instead tend to focus more on academic achievements: it is just a matter of policy of the university.

It just means that your application has not been reviewed yet. You should know that Columbia has not only sent admissions to many people, but rejections as well. They won't hide it from you, if you're rejected. So, as long as you don't hear from them, you're still in the game.

Is Columbia sending one e-mail per day!? Seriously, it seems like it takes forever! By the way, is anyone applying for Columbia interested in the human rights program?

I applied to the Human Rights program, was admitted in January, but still no word from the Human Rights Fellowship. Does anyone know whether the financial aid decisions are final? Are they likely to change as the student body forms later on?

Still waiting.....I've been admitted as well in other universities but I prefer by far Columbia because I'm interested in arbitration and it is the best university in this area.
Let's hope for the best!

Quite a surprising statement... NYU is top 1 for human rights stuff; you cannot attend a human rights conference without Alston being cited and the opportunities they provide both during and after the LL.M. are wonderful.

I didn't expect I'd be in the luxureous position of having to choose between both law schools, but the argument holding me back from being unconditionally seduced by CLS is exactly the international human rights law program of NYU.
