Hi everyone, I recently got accepted to UCL for the 2008-2009 LL.M..... Has any one else been accepted???

It would be great to hear from everyone... maybe discuss accommodation, budgeting or any other interesting topics...

pd.: if you participate in this thread then it must be because you were also accepted, so, congrats!

Hi mate - I've been accepted.

How did you decide on UCL? Its a really hard choice between UCL and LSE, but I'll probably go for LSE.

well congrats!
i am going for int'l law... the course offering is much more oriented toward int'l public law.... the Centre for International Courts and Tribunals is also a big plus.... finally my bro went to LSE so i decided to do something different........

In any case, it is a win win situation i'm sure that either one of them is a great choice!

How come you are going for LSE?

Good question - well, various reasons:
1) Partners at international law firms said LSE is the best
2) LSE is one of the best social sciences institutions in the world
3) LSE has subject offerings in my interest area
4) LSE is much more well known in the common law world. Example, when explaining to people, I say "UCL" and the response is "where's that?" or "UCLA?", whereas if I say "LSE", the response is "oh yeah that's good!".
5) The scholarship winners (ie: menzies) in Australia have, since forever, only selected Oxford, Cambridge or the LSE for postgraduate study in law.
6) a partner at Bakers, who is from England, did the ranking for me and said LSE is very, and I quote, "groovy"
7) I like the fact that a nobel prize is won every 5 or 6 years

Generally however, in Australia, LSE is very well known. I understand it ios the same in the US. Hence the common law world.

Best wishes

UCL is on par with the LSE. Anywhere North America certainly knows it is just as good.
But, there is one big factor in favour of UCL: the 'names' actually teach the courses!

Hi,

Due to some problems with getting my second reference to UCL, my application was not completed until 15 January 2008 or so. Can any of you tell me how long it took between your application becoming complete and receiving your offer of admission?

I've been accepted at LSE so I am just figuring out how long to wait to hear from the other universities I've applied to.

Thanks.

Hi everyone.... well from my experience the whole application/ acceptance procedure took about 2 months..... if anyone hasn't applied yet I'd suggest you call either admissions or the law graduate office and ask if you are still in time to apply, I think that UCL makes the selection on a "rolling basis" which means that eventhough the deadline for application is still open, there might not be any places left!!!

On the other hand, any accepted students can feel free to contact me in skype, my user name is villegasjaramillo.

Finally is anyone focusing their LLM on Public In'tl Law?

regards,

UCL, differently from many others, prefers communicating via regular mail. You receive letters in the course of consideration (as I presume you already know).

Should you have any queries - it is best to call up "admissions office" by phone number printed on the bottom of the letter they send you. Phone guy there is really helpful - I found out from him I was accepted about two weeks before the actual letter came to me.

Hey everyone!

I've got a question: I received a conditional offer from UCL but still they only gave me 4 weeks to accept it. Does anyone know what would happen if I accepted the offer but later revoked it? Is there some kind of "punitive fee"? Also, do they request proof of not having fulfilled the condition? (in my case it's the graduation which is still to come)

Thanks in advance,

Is it their standard reply? as i supposed it would take UCL up to 10 weeks (like LSE) to get the decision as I have applied quite late...

(ii) during what period of time does KCL usually response?

I am quite surprised with what has happened but need to share this with all. It’s pertaining to my application to UCl. It had reached the registry of UCL on January 18 and even received a confirmatory letter bearing application number and detailing out that the application is complete on January 28. For last one whole month I had been regularly making calls to the admission department and had got same response each an every time “that your application is with the law department and same is being considered”. To my horror and surprise when I called the law department I found that they are yet to receive my application from central registry and apparently the same has been lost in transit. This is a very sticky situation as I have been asked to make a new application now….Any suggestions?

To my horror and surprise when I called the law department I found that they are yet to receive my application from central registry and apparently the same has been lost in transit. This is a very sticky situation as I have been asked to make a new application now….Any suggestions?

If I were you, the first thing I should do would be calming down... I know that it is easy to say so, but you need to be calm to talk to Admission Department guys.

So ok, as I have applied at the same time frames, I should say, that this all sounds strange. But (1) if you called them and they insured you that you application was sent to consideration, they must not take this information from the ceiling. So in their tracking-system it was marked as "sent to consideration", i.e. they have received it and it was completed. (2) Law Department representative might be mistaken or did not hear your ID information clearly – everything might have happened... so take a deep breath and call them again.

And do not be terrified to go though your application procedure again. You are a lawyer or what? Consider of it as your first legal dispute and nail them!.. You have you letter telling that you application was submitted automatically after the 2-nd reference was received? So tell them about it... Application manager also saved your application and all supporting documents, it can not be destroyed from the server!.. So you need to get a clear answer (1) what has happened? (2) when they will re-send you application to admission office for consideration (THEY have to do it, not you) and (3) make sure that you still have a time privilege, i.e. that you ARE considered as a student, who applied on 28 January 2008 and not a month afterwards, (4) as it was their mistake, make sure that you receive your answer as soon as possible.

It was their fault (so they will have to pay :)) and you have arguments, so win the case! and good luck to you.

hi everyone.. i have a query mainly 4 the indian partcipants of this forum, as they would b more aquainted with the demands of legal market in india. when do u think is the right time for one to enrol 4 LLM, immediately after doing LL.B. or after acquring some experience in the feild.
would my position, from employment perspective, be more stronger if i have work ex to supplement my LLm degree.
i am currently in my final year law, have received conditional offers too but have recently discovered the excessive weightage accorded to work ex by the law firms. so m lil confused..
also would like to receive ur comments n suggestions regarding accomodation in Uk. thanks!

YES, I know that it supposed to be late... but all of the named universities proceeded my applications quite shortly and currently I am under consideration

Does anybody know:

(i) if UCL wrote the official letter and stated that they will make their decision on me by 11 March 2008, is it REALLY possible?.. I was surprised that they stated the term of 5 weeks and proceeded my application so shortly. Is it their standard reply? as i supposed it would take UCL up to 10 weeks (like LSE) to get the decision as I have applied quite late...

(ii) during what period of time does KCL usually response?

Thanks all of you for replies and/or comments (if any)

Hi,
don't know if this information will help. Got the letter from UCL today an it stated a time period of about 6 weeks ( 4th of April). So good luck to you!

Brett,

thank you for the information about KCL. I have received information that my application is completed two and a half weeks ago and still have not heard from KCL...

Re UCL decision time, you should call them. I have read some where that it takes them about 2 or 3 weeks to deliver the letter on decision. My ackowledgement letter was delivered to me in 16 days. So even before I have got it, I called them and they informed me that they were going to make a desicion on the second week of March. So you really should call them and they may help you... cause waiting is killing sometimes.

Good luck.

Bohohead,

it is absolutely normal as UCL does not write emails, they prefer to communicate by post... so you should have called them on 8 March 2008 (I was told that decisions arrive in 1 or 2 weeks period)... you still may call them and find out the decision...

Though I think you should check your postbox and you will find your letter there.

Good luck.

QM certainly has a more established specialism in IP law. UCL are attempting to up their profile and are succeeding admirably - they recently aquired Sir Hugh Laddie as Professor of IP Law. He is a very well known High Court Judge with a wealth of experience in that area. I think if I had to choose - I may well agree UCL is becoming increasingly the more attractive option. However, you should certainly not dismiss QM out of hand - its great strength over a number of years has been IP law. It's a tough choice - and I think anyone who has told you not to go anywhere near QM doesn't know a great deal - if anything - about universities in the UK.

According to the letter the selectors were given my application on April 1 and I should here news by May 7. Does anybody know if takes such a long time or did anybody receive a decision before the date they were given intheir letter?

Do the provisional course choices have any influence on our final course selection opportunities? Does the offer normally tell for which specialisation you have been admitted?

hey guys

Got an offer from KCL and UCL for the LLM. I have decided to go for UCL. I made this decision based on their placing on the league table (9th in world, 4th in UK) and the fact that UCL is within the Russell Group. It is part of the 'G5' sub-group of 'super-elite' universities, along with Oxford, Cambridge, LSE and Imperial. My motivation also for doing the LLM at UCL is to lead to better job prospects.

Would you guys agree with this reasoning as although I am excited about the programme I am worried about my choice?

My application was submitted on 28 Feb and I received an acknowledgment letter two weeks later saying that I'd hear the result of my application by 28 April. Today, 30 April, I hadn't heard from them, so I called 02076797742 and gave my application number. The receptionist told me the acceptance letter was sent out on 29 April for a conditional offer of 2:1. So I'm very relieved since I'm having my exams right now and 2:1 is not much of a challenge. LSE gave me a conditional offer of average 66% which at the moment is bleak because my average is 65%.

As to dilemma of having to choose between KCL, UCL, LSE (don't even bother considering QMUL, just not in the same league), I had that dilemma when I applied for LLB. I had offer from all three, and I chose KCL because it has a better reputation back where I came from. It was a mistake. The nickname that other rivals give "polytechnic" is not far from truth. I regret my choice. My friends at LSE and UCL are on the other hand very happy with their universities. They have all the good things to say. Try asking people from KCL and see what they tell you. Not many will actually genuinely believe that KCL is the best. If you don't believe me, choose KCL and see it for yourself :-)

There are many reasons for my statement. Here are the chief reasons:
1. QMUL is no where to be found in the ranking tables;
2. QMUL neither has the comparable reputation nor tradition for legal education as other UoL colleges.
3. QMUL cannot boast famous alumnus.
4. That may be due to the fact that it does not attract creme de la creme. The entry standard is 387.
5. QMUL is located in East London, that sums it up nicely.

So I'm rather surprised that you were shocked. I thought it was self-evident and the whole world knew. Don't get me wrong. There is nothing demeaning about QMUL. I'm sure many alumni come out and have successful careers. Institutions only play a part in that, the rest is your own ability.

Hi there,
I was accepted at the Academy and am waiting on the scholarship answer. But frankly there is not much information out there. THey are relatively new and I have not seen them in the rankings. THe chief attraction is that they are in Geneva and have contacts. I am a lawyer in the refugee law area and so for me their focus is ideal, however foryour area I would think twice. But if you do find out any information on their reputation, please pass it on. I don't know any of the graduates personally, I chatted with two of them briefly over the internet, and they were happy with the program itself, but as for question "was it worth it", both said they are trying to figure it out now. So, not very encouraging. But at least on paper the program looks pretty amazing.
Tanya
P.S. I hope it's not a general indicator, but the whole application process was characterized by ongoing delays on the part of the Academy. But maybe I am just bitter because I just can't wait any longer for the scholarship decision ;)

Are any of you familiar with the housing application process? I submitted my application via fax and email around the end of April, and sent a hard copy by mail (which should have been received after 3 weeks). When can we expect the results thereof?

I have recently contacted with UCL as to Deferal Process and they told me only sending an e-mail including the expression of your deferal requisition and your existing offer, which must be accepted, via fax would be enough . by the way anybody knows that how many weeks i have to attend for Pre-Sessional in the event of holding 6.5 from ielts?

many thanks

OK, I am getting confused by all the abbreviations. This is a question for those planning to attend the ADH - Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights: when exactly does the program starts and ends? Has anybody received a formal schedule so to speak? I am not sure for which dates to look for accommodations - from the beginning of September, from the middle... and till what date - till end of may, end of June, October? Any advice is welcome and if anybody has found a decent apartment to share, write back!

hi!
i have accepted a conditional offer from ucl. I have to score 7.5. at ielts but unfortunately i had 7. So probably i will go for the pre-sessional courses. Is there anyone else having the same problem?? Of course i will retake ielts but it is hard to achieve 7.5. So does anyone have any idea about how difficult is to achieve 75% at pre-sessional courses?
Tnx!!

hi, even I am having same problem. I scored 7 bands in IELTS and require 7.5 bands for UCL. So i am so much confused regarding the same. I am thinking to re appear for IELTS again and try. ALso i have requested for the offer letter for Pre sessional classes. they have given me 5 weeks classes. So even i am thinking that it would be difficult to get 75% over there. I dont know what to do??

hi.. I think the best we can do is just to retake ielts in case...it is always a matter of luck...Presessional courses seems to me the last solution, as of course it is really streesful to go there and to be obliged to pass 75%,...By the way, they have also offered me a 5 week place..
So good luck to all of us...

Does anyone have any info on accommodation (beyond the info on the Accommodation Booklet and that posted on UCLs web site)?

I recently did the “virtual tour” on the Intercollegiate Halls (http://www.london.ac.uk/810.html) and they look awful (to say the least)!

Even though I chose the Student Houses as my first choice, I'm starting to get worried over the fact that I might be spending nearly 7000 GBP on accommodation that is not on par with private accommodation.

Any comments?

cheers,

v.

even i got a 7.0 in ielts...all univerisities except ucl accepts this score...i spoke to the faculty of law today at ucl..they said the test could be re-taken anytime b4 september...
ive already given the ielts exam twice and i got 7.0 both times...ucl isnt considering it and it doesnt even accept an ielts waiver letter...
so too bad!

i was also a little mislead when i received a postcard from ucl saying "congratuations for your success, we look forward to welcoming you in september"...i found out today that it was just a letter acknoledging that i accepted their offer...

so has anyone met the coniditions of their offer letter and have got an official admission letter?

i have an upper second class and my offer letter mentioned a first class i.e. 60%
i have no idea wats gonna happen...keeping my fingers crossed :)

We can write lots of posts here with the questions "Why don't they just accept my 7.0 score on IELTS" and nothing will happend.

I am surprised that UCL Admissions has prolonged deadline for meeting English Language Requirements. On the UCL LLM official site it is mentioned that you have to meet your language requirements by 30 June 2008 (see Section "Language Requirements"). So I am surprised that in fact they allow students to make it by September.

As for me, after some considerations, I will take pre-sessional courses.

Hope to see you all in September!
