Hi,

I was just wondering how long it takes from the time Queen Mary sends out an email that they are processing your application to the time that they actually make a decision. Thanks!

Hi!
Could anybody inform me on the suitable form of the transcript of my law degree marks?Does it have to be certified (notarized) and with apostille or just certified (notarized)?

TIA

Well Parul it's supposed to be one of the best as far as commercial law goes.. they have a specialised center called CCLS (Center for Commercial Law Studies) dedicated to the study of Commercial law..the center compares with the best in the world as far as this particular dicipline goes. They have several emminent professors including Professor Loukas Mistelis who has been hailed as one of the 'leading lights' in arbitration , the world over..this may not vouch for much but Im taking a break from a pretty well settled career..nearly two years in litigation at Delhi High Court for an llm at QMUL.. and I wouldn't have done that unless the institute was really worth it .

Hey N_K_S, thanks indeed for your reply. it was very helpful. I understand that you have a litigation background and since i also plan to to take up litigation and arbitration after completing LLM ( I am presently in final year LLB from Govt Law College, Mumbai), I would like to clarify few other doubts and would be grateful for your reply.
1. What professional advantages does this degree offer esp for a person interested in lit.
2. how much does it affect the perception of the employers (law firms) .
3. is it essential for one to have practical experience in the field in order to better grasp the contents of this course?
4. how do u think UCL compares with QMUL in comm law. (if u hv ne particular source of info in this respect, kindly let me no)

Hey Parul, as far as my research goes, I have been speaking to people from different places and some of them are already are in UK like pedrinus and Homer Simpson on LLM guide.

What I have come across them saying is that for Commercial Law, LSE and UCL are the best and after that Durham. They have said some great things about Durham especially for Commercial Law. They say that its even better than KCL. There is no comparison of Durham LLM commercial law with QMUL. Durham also ranks higher than KCL & QMUL in the rankings. The only thing about QMUL is that its in London and that too it is one of the 5 UOL Universities. I am also confused as I am awaiting offers from UCL and KCL. Anyways I have received conditional offers from QMUL and Durham. So I am not worried anymore. Coz Durham is really good. Check out the post QMUL OR DURHAM

Well Parul the thing is that in lit an LLM would not help you much..'Tangibly'..what it would do is strenthen your concepts of law..help you percive a situation in a different yet objective manner..probably help you roll your R's a little better ..change you as a lawyer...and yes...make your card look amazingly glamorous to boot!! As far as law firms go ..they will welcome you with open arms..i know of a certain well known indian law firm that recruits at a handsome pay if you have an llm..i would belive that a certain amount of field work would help you appreciate the theory a little better ut you may be in danger of never going for your LLM at all once you enter the profession, and in responce to your last query there is no doubt that UCL has a better name and some really great professors... Prof. Ronald Dorkin is the Dumbledore of jurisprudence..it has a gr8 comm law course too but as far as arbitration,ADR, and IP go, QM outdoes it..

Hey Pritish I fully agree with you to the extent that Durham is a gr8 uni but apart from Oxbridge UCL,KCL,SOAS,LSE,QMUL, Warwick, Bristol and Durham are all top tire 2 and to say that one tire 2 college is better than the other is intellectually unfair. Moreover other 'non London Schools' can also lay well founded claims to the crown that you bestowe upon Durham. Moreover dude if youve got admission in Durham just check because as far as I have heard from people , the University is undergoing a bit of a crisis..12 of its profs have left..just doublecheck with prof. Phil Thomas who does the seminar on Law in the Education UK exibitions in India and he would be able to give you an accurate idea of the current situation..do check as an LLM is a heavy Investment and one should not be sorry for it..even I was appyling to Durham but stopped when i heard this..even other wise Durham would have been my fail safe option..this is because 2 of my profs, 1 of whom has done his llm from cardiff and the other who is right now the principal of a law college and who regularly lectures abroad have suggested UoL in general and QM in particular for arbitration and IP, moreover a University of London/UoL moniker sells better in India ..I would much rather have an LLM(Lond.) on my card than justify my masters even though it may be very good , to ppl..some good SC senior counsels have also suggested UoL...the rankings which you talk about are the Guardian Rankings which are general and not for a specific postgraduate Masters in Law..the only way to "rank an LLM" is by its popularity and by word of mouth..on that account all you have to do is check the link "Most Popular LLM Programs" on this very website...UCL and QMUL are both *** programs which are invariably in the top 10 (1st and 6th respectively last month).Even otherwise i do not belive that Durham is better than KCL or even for that matter Bristol and Warwick on general rankings ..just check the following link out..
www.topuniversities.com/worlduniversityrankings/

If you want to stay on in the UK thats another matter all together.. it really doesent matter which University you are from..as long as you are rom tire 1 or top tire 2 ..I have a friend from Uni. Bristol who did his llm and got a job..and ! from Kings who was forced to come back after her LLM in Commercial Law..securing a job there is totally dependant upon your Luck and Hard work..even so i would still choose a University of London college..simply because by virtue of there being a lot more opportunity in the capital which is perhaps the most cosmopolitan place in the UK, my chances of being rewarded for my work would go up tremendously!

Even so I still hold that Durham is a great Uni..all Tire 2 schools have there following..I suppose I prefer Bristol, Warwick and QM to Durham... But do check about the prof exodus dude!

Hey N_k_S, I appreciate your response. I am not done with my research yet as I have till July to decide where I want to go.

I have received conditional offers from QMUL, Durham, Manchester and I am awaiting my offers from UCL and KCL. If we want look at Unis which are good for Commercial Law then it would go something like this LSE, UCL, KCL, QMUL, Durham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Manchester, Nottingham. Warwick doesn't have commercial law, otherwise it would have been there.

Of course, QMUL has a great advantage of being UoL college and in London. If it was for LLM in IP, QMUL is the best and I wouldn't have looked at any other uni. After speaking to people who are from there I came to know that Durham has a great reputation for commercial law and QMUL comes after that. I have to consider which uni will be good for me in terms of getting a job there and prospects after coming back to India. I think you have done your research on the profs as well which i haven't started that yet. But would definitely like to keep in touch with you. My first preference is UCL and then KCL. If I don't get in either of them it would be either QMUL or Durham/Manchester, Bristol. What i heard after speking to people that Durham has a great rep among the London Law firms as some of the Partners have done thier law from Durham and most of the rejects of Oxbridge go to Durham.

I know .. I meant The overall law rankings..which nessesarily do not reflect the Taught Masters Ranking but focus more on the LLB and research degree rankings...and yes I know that Durham is a gr8 school but just check about the stuff that I posted ..the professor exodus..because it may not be gr8 stuff to find that the teacher that you were going there for has left for some other university..keep in touch man!

Warwick has an International economic law course with the compulsory module IEL focussing on various regulatory frameworks, formal and informal, that govern international economic relations there by dealing with issues of overlap of national and inter national laws and factors figuring in the settelment of international economic diputes..it is therfore hardly surprising that the study availible remedies and int. comm. arbitration includes itself in the module...after that you casn choose 4 out of any of the given options ranging from corporate law ..which is company law ,M&A and and international out look of the same to banking and securities, to IP to international taxation to legal aspects of international corporate finance.....this course though not named " Commercial & Corporate Law" , has all the same modules...one of my friends who attended it is working in UTv and the other in Kochhar.
