Congratulations to all admitted applicants! It's a privilege to be able to study at Chicago, the place where Law and Economics was born. Wed Feb 20, 2008 06:58 PM As far as the rest of us are concerned (those who didn't receive an e-mail from Chicago), I guess in this case no news is bad news... [Edited 20 Feb 2008 by L&E-pil] |

Wed Feb 20, 2008 07:41 PM Gppin - where are you from? I am for Brazil. Very pleased indedd to be admitted to a selective Law School such as Chicago. Though choice between Columbia (to which I was also offered a spot) and Chicago. Just to let you know, I applied early, mid-October. I guess, however, that doesn't play an important role in their admissions process. |

I'm in, too. I gather that they grant admissions roughly at one time regardless of the time of application by each applicant, given the size of the LL.M. Program there. I'm from China.Thu Feb 21, 2008 02:31 AM I have two concerns, however, one being the weather in Chicago (I've been told by many people that it's very cold there in winter) and the other being the safety of the campus (it's said that the campus is located in an area where the safety cannot be assured). Any comment? Also, the final exam for the spring quarter ends at the end of May, which may also affect the preparation for the NY bar exam. |

Thu Feb 21, 2008 06:25 AM I'm in, too. I gather that they grant admissions roughly at one time regardless of the time of application by each applicant, given the size of the LL.M. Program there. I'm from China. I think the weather won't be much worse than any other area of the U.S., where prestigious Law Schools are (i.e. Michigan, Harvard/Boston, Yale/Connecticut, Columbia/New York, Pennlaw/Philadelphia). All of these places are cold! I don't know which region of China you come from, but you can understand that I, being a Greek, I'll definitely have a problem with the weather, since Greece's climate is like California's (despite the fact that a few days ago Athens was struck by a massive snowstorm which paralyzed the city). Your second point is interesting, as I haven't heard that Hyde Park is an unsafe place. I thought it was a safe place to be and that there were apartments around the campus, where you could live with your family etc. I'll probably have to phone to some of the many Greeks that reside in Chicago (Chicago is the city with the most Greeks in the world after Athens and Thessaloniki) in order to ask them about safety in Hyde Park. I will post what they tell me as soon as possible. As far as the NY bar exam is concerned, I remember reading in a brochure that Chicago sent me 2-3 years ago, that there is a special route that students who are interested in NY bar preparation could follow in the last quarter, in order to be able to finish sooner. That's all I know for now, I think that the materials they will send us by March 20th will include more information on the subject. [Edited 21 Feb 2008 by L&E-pil] |

To L&E -pil:Thu Feb 21, 2008 07:14 AM Thanks very much for the response above. With respect to the safety in Chicago, I have done a quick general research on the internet and it said that there's a safety problem in communities surrounding the university, altho' I'm confident that it'd be just fine living in the university. Please share with us any information you may find as regards the accommodation there. Thanks. |

Thu Feb 21, 2008 07:18 AM I applied for Chicago, but haven't received anything yet. Does it mean rejection? Judging from last year's posts in this site, I'd say it doesn't mean rejection. Chicago announces both admissions and rejections through e-mail. Other universities send admissions by e-mail and rejections by regular mail, so in these cases if you don't receive anything you know that you're rejected. But Chicago doesn't do that. As long as you have not received anything yet, I'd say that you're still in the game. Chicago just released the first bunch of admissions. There is going to be a second one within a reasonable timeframe (presumably by late March). After all, you might get sth today, as they have proven to sent admissions manually (and not automatically or simultaneously). I received the e-mail 4 hours after the first person here claimed to have received it. So, they might still go on with the e-mail process. Good luck! |

Thu Feb 21, 2008 07:25 AM To L&E -pil: I think the campus itself should have security. They can't just leave students exposed to danger! I think Chicago has special agreements with private appartments (i.e. Regents Park), which are in another area but only 15 min by bus to the campus. Regents Park can't be in an unsafe place. I would recommend you visit www.law.uchicago.edu/Life/housing.html You will find plenty of information with regard to housing for Chicago Law Students. Btw, nice .gif file you've got in your profile! |

Thu Feb 21, 2008 01:43 PM Hey L&E-pil, congtrats on your acceptance!! You deserve it after all the waiting! Thanx gppinheiro! It must obvious that I'm one of the most anxious participants to this forum. I actually panicked yesterday when people were posting that they received the admissions e-mail and I had nothing in my inbox. Are you going to chose Chicago over Columbia? |

Hey, Guys!! Got admitted too!! I’m also from Brazil (Rio de Janeiro). Congratulations to everyone else already admitted and keep up the hope, those who are still waiting. Apparently, this was the first "round" of admissions...

For those of you who were asking about weather and safety:Thu Feb 21, 2008 04:02 PM 1) Winter is really cold. Las week we have freezing temperatures (-30ºC/-25ºF). It is colder than any other city with major universities. The wind is awful and if you go out during a wind chill advisory it is almost certain you will have skin cuts… As soon as you arrive in Chicago you need go to a store and buy winter clothes (and I am not joking). In any event, as you will be studying as hell you will not have much time to go outside and be cold… 2) As for the NY bar preparation the BAR/BRI courses start in June and you should have your last exam on March 31. So you will be fine. Be sure to bring transcripts in English from your universities as they are required by the NY Board of Examiners as also letters from those universities. If you enter the NY Bar web page you will be able to see everything they will require and believe me, it is not a walk in the park. 3) Safety is definitely an issue. If you are planning to live in Hyde Park the only really good option is Regent´s Park. Buses stop in the door (# 172 for the university and # 6 downtown, you’ve got the Metra one block away). The advice we are always given is not to go out walking during the night even within the campus. Last November a student from the university was shot just a few meters outside the campus… Hyde Park is a bubble within the south Chicago area. So, as long as you live in Regent’s Park, do not walk randomly during dark hours, and do not do stupid tings you should be fine. If you do not live in Regent’s Park the issue is that when you go downtown no bus will leave you near you department and thus you will have to walk (please don’t as it is dangerous) or take a cab from downtown (cause you will not find them easily in Hyde Park which will cost you around $20). Hope this helps. |

As of now I'm pending towards Columbia, although I have the highest respect for Chicago. My brother was a LL.M graduate student in Chicago in 2006/2007 and has all the details.Thu Feb 21, 2008 04:25 PM In this specific case (Chicago vs. Columbia) I guess it all comes down to what you want to study and your personal preferences really.
