-30C???????!!!!!!!! Even Siberia should be warmer than this! I will difinitely miss the warm Greek sun.... The safety issues you mentioned actually frightened me. I couldn't imagine that Hyde Park would be such a dangerous place. I just thought it would be " a wonderful green island in the city of Chicago" like I've read in some magazines. What if you have to stay at the library until late in order to study? |

Then you would make use of the safe ride service provided by the university that would pick you up and deliver you within any place in Hyde Park. If you live downtown you will have a problem though. You also have special shuttles running up to 2 am as the #172 bus stops running at 7 pm... The university is GREAT!!! The Law School is superb but Hyde Park is neither of both...

Rej, that is exactly what I've heard from of friend of mine who went to UChicago two years ago! As usual your advice is very useful! Thu Feb 21, 2008 09:14 PM By the way, although UChicago is a great law school and I was really happy to be admitted, like gppinheiro, Columbia remains my first choice. |

Hi all, I'm in too... The email was sent to my mailbox 7 hours ago. And they are very kind to set the initial response deadline on April 15. I'm sure we should all have our decisions by then. Sat Feb 23, 2008 04:16 AM blooming [Edited 23 Feb 2008 by blooming] |

Is there anyone among the admitted applicants, who is going for sure to Chicago? I still wait for decisions from Harvard, Yale and Columbia. If Columbia offers me admission I will most likely turn it down, as I would prefer to go to Chicago (interested in Law and Economics). In addition to this, I don't think Harvard and Yale will offer me admission, so I guess I should already have to prepare for Chicago. Sun Feb 24, 2008 07:25 PM The admissions e-mail said that I'm going to receive the admissions material until March 20 through FedEx and they asked me to respond to the e-mail by sending an address and a phone number for FedEx to deliver. Is this the case with everyone admitted? [Edited 24 Feb 2008 by L&E-pil] |

I think its the standart admission e-mail. I'm also waiting for HLS and SLS, but i think UCHICAGO is an amayzing school and i would love to go there. Where are you from? |

Sun Feb 24, 2008 08:26 PM Sure. That's the same e-mail i received. I think its the standart admission e-mail. I'm from Greece. What about you? I consider Chicago to be a great law school for an LL.M. Great Professors (unparalleled faculty if you want to study Law and Economics), the quarter system gives you the opportunity to attend as many courses as possible, there is the independent research option where you can pick a subject and study under the supervision of any professor you like, the socratic method (entirely different from the typical european system of lecture delivery) and a small class size. I would really like to go there. I'll just have to wait for Harvard and Yale, before I make my decision. |

I would like to hear your thoughts about the location of the school. Everyone here seems to think that attending a school in NYC (i.e. Columbia, NYU) would increase the chances of finding a job. About your question, i'm from Israel. |

Sun Feb 24, 2008 09:56 PM I do not have any idea about the Chicago U. Law School area. I guess this map could be useful: maps.uchicago.edu/hydepark.shtml What about university housing, is it any good? I have read about security issues in that area. Is it ok if you live in university-owned buildings (Graduate Student Housing or New Graduate Residence Hall)? And what about the international house? Thank you! |

Sun Feb 24, 2008 10:00 PM I do not have any idea about the Chicago U. Law School area. Rej (a doctoral student at Chicago) told us that there are shuttle buses which would pick you up anywhere in the Hyde Park area and drive you to the law school and vice versa. In general, I'm sure UChicago has predicted all these stuff. In there website they list many housing opportunities, which shows that they can deal with the issue. I, personally, don't worry about the housing. In daytime, it can't be more dangerous than any other major city in the US and during the night you just take the shuttle bus which runs until 2:00 am. |

One additional upside for Chicago's LL.M: As an LL.M. you can do any course you want (you have no restriction at all) and you do not have any mandatory LL.M. course. Apart from that, all courses are with the J.D. and you are evaluated on the same grounds... Thus, it is very competitive (in the good sense of the word) but that allows you to measure yourself against the J.D. I am not sure other LL.M. programs allow you this... here you are just another student and not just a foreigner LL.M.
