I thought it might be helpful to start a consolidated thread for NYU '08 admits. We could even start a Facebook group for those of us on Facebook! As things start to firm up, we can exchange information on practical things like flights and accommodation...

I'll start the ball rolling--

I've been admitted to the General Studies LLM (on the Hauser), and am from Southeast Asia. As for housing, I intend to live in Mercer or D'ag, but I can't get into the Admitted Students site! Argh.

Hi Exbcler, congrats on your admission. I'm afraid I can't help you right now since I'm still waiting for my admission. But I was curious to know when you got your answer and if you applied through the regular review (NYU only) or for the program at NUS as well.
Thanks!

I haven't heard anything from NYU yet, however, did neither apply for NUS@NYU nor for the Hauser scholarship but only for the normal corporate law program at NYU. Where did you get the date 15 March from? As I have to commit to Columbia until 10 March at the latest, I really hope to receive an answer from NYU in the course of this week. Does any one else have this problem? How are you handling it if NYU does not send out its decisions in due time?

I am in the same position as you are, as I have also been admitted to Columbia.

NYU webisite states that "Decisions regarding the full-time LL.M. program in New York City will be communicated in early to mid-March to applicants with foreign education credentials who supply all materials necessary to complete their files by the December 1 deadline, without preference to date of application". The March 15th estimative was based on last year's results.

It's a though choice, since both alternatives consist of tremendous top notch schools. Sometimes I wonder whether they set these dates on purpose to compel students to enroll before receiving all the results.

I have a question.
I have been admitted to NYU (full time in NY) and they are offering me the Hugo grotius scholarship (Full tution fees covered). But there is a condition: If they give me the scholarship, I would have to withdraw any other admission from other universities. Actually it's first, come-firts-served, so If I wait to long, no more scholarship for me, but I can still get in.
My dream is to go to Harvard, and I did not received any answer from them yet. Do you think I should take the risk and wait?

Congratulations, tannaz!

Well, it's really a question that only you can answer. Do you want to go to Harvard so much that you are willing to turn down a full scholarship at NYU (which has a great international law programme) and run the risk that you may not get in? Or would you rather have your way paid at NYU? It's your call.

My feeling is that if you are good enough for the Grotius you are probably good for an admit at Harvard. Harvard is a huge programme.

I suppose one way (but you must be careful not to be too obnoxious when you do this) is to explain your situation to the Harvard admissions people, and see if they can expedite communicating your admit decision.

Out of curiosity- Tannaz- Do you see your transcripts attached to the online application?

Is there anyone who has received acceptance w/o a scholarship? Seems like the ones with the scholarships are hearing first. Good luck all!

Hi all,

I received a letter of admission last night (26 Feb dated 19 Feb) and an offer for the Vanderbilt scholarship (full tuition waiver) and a research associate spot. I had a couple of questions...

1. I see this question came up earlier, and i just wanted to repeat it in case anyone had some insight. How long do we realistically have to accept these first-come-first-serve scholarships? I still want to hear from other universities (Yale and Oxbridge) and about financial aid from Columbia before i make a final decision, but i am worried that i might be throwing away a great opportunity at NYU if i wait too long.

2. Does everybody get the research associate offer or is it selective? I couldn't tell from the letter. I'm just trying to decide if this is an added bonus i should consider when weighing NYU against other schools.

3. I know there are other posts on this, but i thought i might add it here: Columbia or NYU? I want to focus on human rights, constitutional law and legal philosophy. Any advice.

Thanks so much for all the valuable information here, congrats to those who have got in and good luck to those who are still waiting!

Mickeyb,
  congratulations!
I don't know about everybody else, but I was offered a Research Associate position as well, although I was offered the Dean's Graduate Award and not the Vanderbilt, Grotius or Hauser. Oh, I applied for the corporate law program.
From what I could get from the letter, everyone receiving the Dean's Graduate Award will be offered a Research Associate position, and thus, I presume those receiving better scholarships (Vanderbilt, Hauser, etc) will be offered Research Associate positions as well.
I also would really like to know how long we may take in making up our minds before we lose the award... Does anyone have an idea?

Hafiz,
they've established May 1, 2008 as my deadline. However, this is the deadline for the offer itself, and not the scholarship. The scholarship may vanish sooner than that (because of the first-come, first-served policy), but they will still accept me by May 1 without the award.
Good luck for y'all!

In order to secure a Dean's Award, one must sign this before sending the deposit:

"I intend to enroll at NYU School of Law in Fall 2008. I have no commitment to attend another law school, have not deferred enrollment at another law school, will not apply to another law school, and have withdrawn from other law schools to which I was admitted."

That means that those choosing to accept this will have to kiss goodbye SLS, HLS, YLS....

What do you think ?

I was admitted in early January to NYU@NUS and these were my credentials: I'm a US Student with 2 years of experience as a litigator with the Innocence Project of Florida (i.e. DNA exonerations). I was in the top 20% of a tier one law school. For extracurricular activities I was Chair of a regional planning commission and a mayoral transit advisor. I am well traveled and participated in a study abroad program while in law school. I have been published twice, was a Law Review editor, a moot court competition winner, was a research assistant to an acclaimed international scholar, and had recommendations from very well known and respected people. I also think I am considered a "minority" student.

Your chances are still reasonable for getting admitted. Despite signing a form promising to withdrawal applications, its important to note that the statement is legally unenforceable. Students just won’t get their $500 back. NYU and Columbia are betting that at least some of their “committed” students are going to abruptly accept offers from Harvard/Yale/Stanford and leave open seats. The number of people who do so I suspect will directly equate to the number of offers sent out in early April.

I myself intend to go to NYU@NUS because I personally believe the program in International Law to be superior to that offered by Harvard, Yale, or Stanford. It would still be nice to be offered a spot in those other programs though ;)

In the "Fall 2008 information for admitted students" provided in the package it is said that "students may request a change of program by writing to the Director of Graduate Admissions". You have to explain the reasons, but if your request is rejected, then you're still admitted to the original program.

Can anyone tell us how many LLM students is NYU enrolling this year?
It seems to be a huge number. On the contrary, schools like Michigan has a small class of only 40! I am having difficulties in choosing among them. So there is a question as to the attention each students received and the real teaching quality. You dont want to be thrown into a mass LLMs factory, do u?

Hello everybody!
The weirdest thing just happened to me. Just out of curiousity I got into the admitted students page and used my application id to sign in and .... it said congratulations on your admission....!!!!!!!!!!!!
However, I wanted to ask those who have recieved the admission letter through the regualr mail(as u can imagine haven't got mine yet):
1. Did it give u a deadline by which to respond?
2. If u were awarded financial aid, does it say so on the online letter?
Thanx!
Good luck to those who r still waiting, and Congratulations to those who got in!!!

This is for all the Domestic Applicants (non-tax):

I spoke with NYU admissions the other day and I was told that they wouldn't send out admission decisions until June!

What a load of garbage on NYU's part. I think less and less of the school every day that goes by.

Hello! I just managed to get my NYU NetID set up, so will set up the group tonight when I get home. It will be on the NYU network, so you'll need your NYU email address to join. I'm getting very excited! Hope to see you guys in the fall.
