knuman: Well done

Hi all - this is what I understand to be the situation.

I don't want to cause any further anxiety but from what I understand Harvard MAY give out early offers to those awarded substantial scholarships with strict deadlines. I can only go so far because I only personally know of one person in this category, and that person was asked to keep it strictly confidential (for the record, he/she did not volunteer this information to me - I only found out after pressing him/her about their inquiries).

This is perfectly understandable because if people find out that they can get offers early then everyone will start emailing/calling Harvard and things would get out of control. So unless you have made it clear to Harvard that you really have a large scholarship from another university with a strict deadline, don't expect anything more than the standard "we can't tell you at this time" or "we advise you not to give up on your other offers" emails. Most applicants would have multiple offers from universities and it would be unreasonable to expect Harvard to release decisions purely on the basis of other acceptance deadlines.

Whether these emails are "polite rejections" I'm not sure, but if you think about it calmly the answer is likely to be no. First, it is possible that they have not finished reviewing all applications - the 21 March date is set for a reason. Second, it makes sense for Harvard to want to avoid giving out YES/NO answers outright. Again, if people know that they can get their decisions early (regardless of whether it is yes or no), then everyone will start bombarding Harvard with requests and the official release date would be pointless. This is why early decisions are only given to the genuinely desperate cases and are only given on a strictly confidential basis.

So don't despair if you haven't heard anything or got one of the standard emails - 21 March is the day that most people will get their results. And try to ignore people who come out early and say they got an offer, because if they really got an offer they would have promised to keep it confidential - and broadcasting it here means they are either lying of they can't keep their word.

Hope that allays some fears.

Great post knuman, I couldn't agree more. Most admission decisions were released on March 19th last year, it will probably be the same this year, only two days later.

Harvard has a large LL.M. program, so even if some applicants were already offered admission doesn't mean that all other applicants should feel discouraged. Besides, to simply state the obvious, nobody can attend more than one LL.M. program at a time. Those going to Harvard will withdraw from other prestigious LL.M. programs - for example, Columbia (and its famous Early Review...). So in the end most people should get a spot somewhere. Finally, let us not forget that some applicants offered admission to Harvard will go to Stanford and Yale... so relax, guys :)

I've also heard that they compare you to people from the same law school you attended (meaning that Harvard does not accept two candidates which graduated from the same Law School). Does anyone know if this is true?

Hey Oak.
Would you mind to clarify? I might be mistaken but i beleive that HLS do work on a country qouta based system. If this is not the case i would love to hear what's the system of admission?

It is not true that they accept one student at most from a particular university; two friends of my class were admitted simultaneously to the LL.M. program two years ago. However, I agree they are not all too keen on selecting from the same breed; a third friend with credentials at least as good as the two others was not accepted. I also believe they aim at selecting as much as possible from different countries, but I'm not all that sure they'd work with strict quota to that end.

It is true that lots of US law schools have so-called "regional/country" quotas. However, such quotas system do not mean that only one person from a particular school would be admitted. Harvard sometime admits several students from a single top school in one county.

Good luck to everyone!

I just received this.................I am in...........

On behalf of Harvard Law School's Committee on Graduate Studies, I am delighted to inform you that you have been admitted to our LL.M. Class of 2009. Congratulations!

I am sending you this e-mail now because I wanted to share the good news with you as soon as possible. We will be sending out the official letter of admission and related materials later this week, and you should receive them some time in the following week, depending on FedEx delivery schedules. (If your admission is subject to your completing certain degree or other requirements, those conditions will be specified in your official admission letter.)

Since admission decisions are made without reference to financial condition, we are only now beginning to review financial aid applications. If you have also applied for financial aid, we will let you know our decision by April 7, 2008. If you are facing an earlier deadline from another institution, please send me the details and we will try to give you an expedited decision.

Meanwhile, should you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I look forward to welcoming you to Harvard Law School!

With best wishes,
Sarine Der Kaloustian (please feel free to call me Sarine)

I sent it at 17.51 and got the response automatically (obviously) :) It went something like this....

Thank you for your e-mail regarding your LL.M. application to the Graduate Program at Harvard Law School.

We expect that our admissions decisions will be available by Friday, March 21st. However, if you have been offered admission by other LL.M. programs and cannot get an extension until at least March 24th, please provide us with all relevant information (including the specific deadlines that you are facing) and we will do our best to provide you with as much information as possible before your deadlines.

Admissions decisions will be sent out via regular mail. You may call our office to obtain your results beginning on Friday, March 21st.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Your e-mail is important to us, and will be answered as soon as we are able.

Kind regards,
Admissions staff

Hi Louise. I'm from Brazil. Taking into consideration that four students(me, kobayashimaru, llmers, jenkinsVrose) told they were admitted almost at the same time, I guess some of the admission decisons were sent out simoutaneasly, Since only five people have put an answer in this forum so far, I don't believe that all decisons e-mails were already sent. Best of luck to you all!

ledvax: Wait list

Dear _________:

The Committee on Graduate Studies has asked me to inform you of its decision regarding your application for admission to the LL.M. Program for the 2008-2009 academic year.

This year Harvard Law School received an overwhelming number of applications for approximately 150 spaces in the LL.M. class. As in previous years, our applicants included a singularly impressive group of practicing lawyers, government officials, law teachers and others from over 70 countries. As you might imagine, such an applicant pool requires that we make some very difficult admissions decisions, and the Committee found it impossible to accept all those whom it would like to encourage in graduate study.

Although the Committee, after careful consideration, is unable to offer you admission at this time, your name has been placed on the waiting list. We expect to have a better idea by mid-May as to whether we will be able to accommodate any candidates from the waiting list. If a place in the class becomes available, we will let you know as soon as possible.

If you wish to discuss your status, please feel free to contact me by phone or by e-mail. If you choose to accept an offer from another school, please notify us so we can remove your name from the waiting list.

Thank you very much for your interest in the Harvard Law School LL.M. Program.

Very truly yours,
Sarine Der Kaloustian

Maybe I pushed my luck a little bit, I sent them two emails today and this is their way of getting rid of me.

To tell you the truth I'm quite happy. At least I don't have the problem of having to decide between SLS and HLS. Now I'm definitely going to SLS!!!
Good luck to all those still waiting and congratulations to those going to HLS!

Hi all, I read llm-guide for more than 2 years but I just register to post.

Reading from previous posts, I think admitted people received emails in different time. Some people receive it a few hours after the first post.

Hopefully, HLS still has available seats.

I still don't hear anything from HLS. Some people may think it's too late if I don't receive anything yet. Let's see whether I will hear the good news before the end of 21 March or maybe, I just have to wait for official rejection.

Congratulations to all those who were admitted and condolences to those who were not. Life goes on even if HLS or YLS don't offer you for admission to their "lofty" programs; trust me, you'll become a solid professional in spite of those elitists!

What is the size of the entering class of LL.M. students at HLS, and also YLS for that matter? I've seen conflicting data on this point (some say 50, others say 150).

I ask because their admission processes strike me as either ridiculously difficult ("oh, we've gotten too many qualified applicants, blah, blah, blah...") or incredibly arbitrary (e.g., cherry-picking applicants from this or that country/background, with no apparent rhyme or reason)!

Anyhow, "buck up" boys and girls who weren't admitted...you're all going to make fine LL.M. students elsewhere!

I wouldn't presume that just because we didn't get news from HLS that we will be rejected. Guys, don't worry. You'll have plenty of time to worry about it if you get rejected. But if you worry too much, a refusal will hurt even more.
Before applying, I prepared myself for the worst outcome, which is nothing more but a mere refusal. I can't deny that it'll be disappointing, but I am prepared. Now, I will try to occupy my mind with something else and time will pass faster. Good luck!

A few questions: If one has been rejected does it weigh negatively to apply again a year later?
If one is granted a prestigous scholarship beforehand- do chances increase to enter?
And last - any accepted applicants this year from Finland? Or Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland?
Thank you in advance.

They don't take into account previous rejections.

I received a plain rejection last year and this year they appear really enthusiastic in having me there. I received an offer some days ago and also a phone call from someone in the Admissions Office to explain the advanteges they have over Yale (I got admitted there too).

I also do not think one could jeopardize his/her application by calling them to have news. Be polite, have a good excuse for calling them - I think everyone already have another offer by now - and get ride with this anxiety.

I've been to Iceland last year, nice place!
