Anybody knows? I am just curious.

Some say they don't allow deferral. Some say they do, as long as your reason is not financial difficulty.

Anyone knows?

Am doing the MJur now. Have a classmate who got accepted to both Oxford and Harvard. Oxford wouldn't allow a deferral but Harvard did. So he's here now and headed to the US after for his LlM. This is just one case though so it might be be good for you to enquire directly with the law faculty.

I have quite the same problem: admitted to Oxford and Yale, I plan to attend Yale (no deferral policy) this fall, and was hoping to attend Ox in 2009-2010. Will they accept this?

It seems Ox doesn't have deferral policy as well....

But maybe you can write to Ox and ask them. They hold the most correct answers.

There are people in this LLMguide who didn't get a deferral last year, and this year have been admitted again via reapplying.

Maybe they can talk about the situation last year? What reasons did they present? Did they meet all the conditions before they applied for deferral? What happened then?

Really want to hear their story.

I sent oxford asking about what their deferral policy is (I am actually asking about the BCL, but I imagine the policies are the same). They aren't teaching their intellectual property course next year, and as I am an intellectual property nerd, I am very disappointed.

From what I've seen around the web, Oxford doesn't deny nor accept the possibility of a deferral (while others, like Yale, explicitly deny it).
I'll write to them (explaining my reasons) and post their answer. Please, if anyone else does it, you r welcome to post too!

I believe this is a very HOT question at the moment. People receive many offers and have to choose from them.

Thank you for your idea. I wrote to Ox and their opinion is they seldom allow deferral except for very exeptional reasons. And usually they recommend a reapplication.

I have a similar issue:

I was admitted to a research degree, and I am wondering what the policy might be for beginning in Hilary Term (January) rather than September. I have a close relative who is very ill, and I am hoping that this is a good enough reason to start three months late.

Here is the response I received from Oxford:

Dear Mr [] Thank you for your email. You may write and request a deferral in the same way you would write to accept the offer of a place.

I should point out that deferrals are seldom given but it would be worth contacting those who made you the offer to see if they are prepared to consider
your request.

best wishes

Hi everyone. Hope this helps. I applied and got offered a place on the BCL last year but then got a great one year job opportunity in the law. I rang the Faculty office who said this wasn't a good enough reason for a deferral so I had to reapply. I got in this year too so it's ok, although we did have to pay to apply this year and not last year! From my understanding work related or financial reasons aren't good enough. I don't know if it's any different for the Mjur but I doubt it. I did hear of someone else via a post last year who got a deferral but they already had a scholarship lined up so it was pretty clear they were going to attend Oxf the following year.

Illness isn't a very good reason I think, especially if that person is your close relative not yourself. How you can prove he/she will get better in three months and you may leave for Oxford in January 2009?

Also many people use this kind of reason. I doubt if they believe or not.

Of course if it is true, you'd have to try. Best wishes for your relative and good luck to you.

Thanks for sharing. What's your decision this year? Are you going to Mjur or Cam LLM?

I am thinking if you got a deferral last year, you'd have to go to Ox. But now you can choose. Good enough.

The answer I got was exactly the one namrepus and mschuster posted above, so...
I'll go to the US this fall and that doen't seem a good reason for deferral... mmmm
I'd better come up with something good, or I may start considering the reapplying way!
thanks all for your help
