Hi,

I was wondering whether anyone had any info on good LLM programs available in the UK if you are trying to get into Entertainment Law, specifically Music law or even fashion law. The only specific Entertainment Law LLM I've heard of is at Westminster University and I have never heard of it so that doesn't seem like a good sign to me.

I have been accepted to study an LLM in Entertainment and Media at UCLA and one in Intellectual Property at Fordham (NYC) but am wary of shelling out the very high tuition fees if there were courses available closer to home for a fraction of the price.

If anyone has any info or ideas for me, it would be greatly appreciated thanks.

I'm looking to specialise in media law - really I think the best place is UCL. Professor Barendt has been Professor of Media Law there for years and now offers specialised courses in freedom of speech and privacy. I will certainly be going if I get an offer.

Anybody?? :(

Yes I saw that course recently. I think I made a mistake by not considering LLMs in the UK sooner as I had my mind set on the US. Do you think it is too late to apply to most Universities at this stage? I am thinking of waiting until 2009 now as it is a bit late in the game to apply to the more prestigious courses.

I would certainly still apply to UCL if it is a course which interests you. They have removed their deadline recentyl and are still accepting applications as far as I am aware. If you are aiming for a scholarship then I would would apply for 2009 however.

Thanks for the info Homer :) I looked into the courses available at UCL they have a lot of IP ones that I'd also be interested in. Was considering Edinburgh University too but most of the courses I was interested in are not on offer for the 2008-2009 year, so that put an end to that!! Now I have to decide which continent to stay on, and which area I really want to end up working in.

Do you think an LLM in Entertainment and Media Law at UCLA would be worth the huge fees in terms of job prospects afterwards?

I am really not at all familiar with the UCLA programme but you are right the fees are huge. I certainly think that all of the interesting work being done in realtion to laws of privacy and data protection is going on in the UK at them moment. UCL as you rightly point out is also good for IP law too. I know I am biased as an English lawyer but I think you would have to go a long way to beat UCL.

There are other places where you can study IP/media law ( and it really depends what you mean by media law). QMU has a good reputation for IP; Essex does Information Technology, Media and e-Commerce, City does and LLM in media law and I suspect there are probably others. You might want to check the sorts of courses that are actually offered and consider whether you want to look at domestic law or international law aspects and whether you are looking at the regulatory framework or specifically at common law or human rights based controls on content. Likewise IP is a broad area and can include courses not connected with the media industry (I would have thought patents fall into this catagory). If you give this some thought then you'll be able to identify much more easily the sorts of courses you want to pick up.
