Which one should i attend Harvard LLM Vs Harvard KSG MPP
I urgently need advice on this.Thu Apr 03, 2008 04:23 PM I have been admitted to HLS LLM and Harvard Kennedy School MPP program. Both schools fit into my program of study very well. For HLS i am on a generous grant and for Harvard kennedy School i am on a fulright full ride. Based on Job prospects and any other factors kindly let me have your suggestions on which school i should attend. Anyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Depends on your 'prgran of study' aim?Thu Apr 03, 2008 04:27 PM If you need law then obviously the LLM. But otherwise I would definitely take the MPP and fulbright. Both for the money and the added prestige of the Fulbright. LLM's are fun years but are not that worthwhile unless a particular reason for doing it (i.e. need som elaw experience or wish to go into legal academia etc) That's my two cents anyway... |

Thanks Lazarus; very insightful.....Thu Apr 03, 2008 04:33 PM when you say some law experience for LLM do you mean private practice? if so will you not be better off in private practice than in Public policy in terms of monetary compensation. Regards |

Hi,Thu Apr 03, 2008 05:38 PM I think all depends on what you want to do in the future and where. I faced a similar decision and opted for the LLM. In my case, it was because in my country I do not need an MPP to get a great public sector job, because we do not have a very professional State. However, I did not wanted to close the private sector doors (because in a developing country you never know if you will always be able to work in the public sector) and obtaining the MPP closes them in some sort of ways. Also, Yale's LLM will help me a lot in my academic legal career, which is something very important to me. Nevertheless, if you want to work in an international organization (WB, IMF, NU, etc) or in a job that needs quantitative skills that you did not learned at law school, then the MPP is the way to go. The LLM will not open you those doors. Good luck! |

Well, not having a huge debt is always very helpful. I do not know how much is the financial difference between the LLM and the MPP in your case (do not forget the living expenses of the additional year at the MPP in an expensive place like Boston!), but if it is something that you can afford I would not take my decision based only on that fact.Fri Apr 04, 2008 06:19 PM In my case, Harvard offered me a little more financial aid than Yale, and I also have a Fulbright scholarship that covers my living expenses so financially it could have been a better decision to go to HLS . However, going to YLS will be better in the long term for other reasons (and I preferred Yale's experience), so I chose Yale. Personally, I think that where and what to study is a long term decision. It is something that will accompany you the rest of your life, so you should not decide because of your financial situation of the next 5 years (unless you are talking about a really huge amount of money that will not let you sleep at night). I think that you should choose the option that can help you more to achieve your professional goals. At the end, that is the reason why we want to obtain another academic degree, right? By the way, being accepted to HLS and KSG is a really outstanding achievement. CONGRATULATIONS!!! |

Hello,Thu Apr 24, 2008 08:18 PM First, congrats on your great application results. You still did not provide your background and career goal. In this case, I don't think anyone can offer better insights than the previous people. I can only guess that you don't need a law degree anymore and you do not consider bar exam in the US, or HLS would be a no-brainer in that case. So the decision really depends on your career goal. Regarding to reapply, maybe you can try to ask HLS whether they are willing to defer your admission (but then you might risk losing that scholarship I guess). |
