Hi,
simple question: how do you qualify as a solicitor in Singapore after graduating with a LLB?
I am studying in the UK and will graduate next year. Here, we need to take a one year Legal Practice Course and do 2 years traning in a law firm to qualify as a solicitor.
Is it the same in Singapore?
Thank you!

Dear vdapp

I'm assuming that you have not been called as a solicitor of England & Wales. If you have, you may be able to apply for a partial exemption.

Nevertheless, regardless of your prior qualification, you will have to do the Diploma in Singapore Law first. This is a 1 year course.

To qualify as an Advocate & Solicitor of Singapore, you will have to do what is known as the Practical Legal Course (PLC) - it's a 5 month course that starts in July and ends in Decemeber. You'd also have to do a 6 month pupillage with a Singapore law firm.

In other words, the process is a little different from the UK. The 'Legal Practice Course' is only 5 months and the traineeship is 6 months.

Hence in summary, you would have to do the following:

1. Diploma in Singapore Law
2. PLC
3. Pupillage
