is Hertfordshire is a good university
actually i send my application to more than one university, the last two universities were Queen Mary and Hertfordshire , the first one send an e mail inform me that i will receive a conditional offer shortly from the registry , the condition was to raise my ielts score from 6.0 to 6.5 at least in order to enrolled in pre-sessional course, then i was suprised to receive a letter of rejection from queen mary stated that that they are unable to offer me a place ,,,,,,, i do not know what happened to them its quite strange .Wed Apr 27, 2005 11:13 PM but i received a offer from Hertfordshire for commercial law , does anybody know if its good university or not for commercial field and international law as well . I know it is ranked in 42 place in the table issued by the times magazine. i would be grateful for the advice |

No, I've heard some pretty bad things about it.

Re: is Hertfordshire is a good university
This is what the Guardian writes about Hertfordshire:Thu Apr 28, 2005 06:40 AM University of Hertfordshire Catharine Freeman Tuesday April 19, 2005 The Guardian The opening of the £120m de Havilland campus in 2003 acted as a real boost for the University of Hertfordshire, improving resources and bumping up application levels. The university now boasts excellent academic, residential, IT and leisure facilities, including a £15m sports complex and a 24-hour hi-tech learning resources centre. The de Havilland campus is located close to the Hatfield site, with cycle-routes and bus paths linking the two. The city centre site in St Albans lies within easy reach and London is just 25 minutes by train. The town/gown divide in Hatfield is now much improved, and the lively students' union offers a wide range of social events, ranging from live music events to a summer ball. education.guardian.co.uk/higher/universityguide/pr… |

Re: is Hertfordshire is a good university
I disagree with that synopsis. I have 2 friends who went there and they were both completely disappointed with the calibre of teaching. Also, the new campus has nothing to do with the law campus, which has limited resources. It is an ex-polytechnic and is rated very low on every scale. Furthermore, they recruit wealthy international students who can barely read and write.

Hi...Mon May 02, 2005 08:49 AM I completely agree with James. I would strongly advise you against going to Hertfordshire unless that is your ONLY option (you can still apply to other Unis or apply early for next academic session). It is not highly ranked. 42 is NOT a high ranking for a Uni in the UK. If you are an international student you will be making a sizeable investment and frankly I don't think the ROI would be substantial. However, if all you want is an LLM from a UK Uni, then I guess Hertfordshire will suffice. As for its reputation in commercial law and/ or international law, I seriously doubt if it can compare with the other more reputed Unis. Hope this helps.. Good luck!!! |

Re: is Hertfordshire is a good university
I had a chance to study at several world-class universities world wide. one of the universities I attended was University of Hertfordshire. I have to tell you that they are not like Oxford or any top university. however, overall, they are a good school and I believe that in the next 10 years they are going to be a top university in the UK. However, my studies were not Law. I was studying computer science . Wed Jun 08, 2005 02:21 AM in term of the Law school which you are concern about, I checked out the Education Guardian ranking and they were ranked 79. this tells me that they don't have a good Law school, although they are ranked as a top new university for Law by The Times Good University Guide 2004. At the end, Hertfordshire is building its name and it is much better then many universities in some studies. they have a wonderful learning and information service center. Allow me to quote, " The University has maintained a high level of investment in digital and print information resources for successive years, with an annual budget of over £1.7 million. The collections comprise some 500,000 volumes of bookstock, over 9000 journal titles (4000 print, 8000 full-text electronic journal titles)" if I were you, and I am not in a hurry, I would wait for another year and aim at getting to a top 10 university. . Re: is Hertfordshire is a good university
I am amazed how many people believe they are qualified to comment on whether "Hertfordshire is a good university" given they have never studied there!Tue Aug 07, 2007 04:33 PM I am a mature student now embarking on the second year of my law degree. I would like to set the record straight, the facilities and standard of teaching are excellent. The open door policy enables students to receive excellent face to face exposure and advice from the many willing and I might add highly qualified staff. The fact that the law school is away from the main campus allows for a quiet and appropriate enviroment to study law. So don't listen to gossip and chinese whispers take it from me this University has a great deal going for it. [Edited by The judge on 07 Aug 2007] |

I agree with "the judge" as above. I too studied there (both my law degree and LPC) and I found it excellent. The resources are second to none (you can find just about any precedent you could ever want as the case law dates back to the 1100s), they video most of the lectures, which are easily accesible via the online intranet (which is brilliant when it comes to revising!), and they even have their own pro bono service and court room and actively participate in national mooting competitions which gives you the practical experience that many law schools do not. The teaching is also excellent with the lecturers delivering the seminars in an informative, yet practical manner, and are always more than willing to help you out and go over things in your spare time if you need clarification on certain areas etc. I am actually now considering taking a masters there, and I have found in the workplace, that employers really dont care where you studied, just that you attained your degrees and can show a passion, dedication and willingness to learn.Wed Jun 10, 2009 04:59 PM |

Re: is Hertfordshire is a good university
QMUL has well-recognised LLM programme (just like LSE, KCL, SOAS and UCL), you'd be daft to favour Hertfordshire over a Uni of London school, and that doesn't mean Hertfordshire is bad...but it just won't offer the calibre of programme that you'll get from one of the Uni' of London colleges for commercial law.
