Hey there,

Im afraid I dont know a lot about LLM in human rights - I am applying myself, but I am certainly not an expert.

Galway is meant to be quite good, I think. The human rights centre there has affiliation with Columbia - which has an excellent human rights reputation.

I have also applied to LSE, Essex, Nottigham, Oxford, Aberdeen and Queens Belfast. I believe Essex prob has the 'oldest' reputation, but Nottigham is 'up and coming' according to the people I know in Geneva.

How is Galway to study at? Is it nice to live there Would you recommend it? I am strongly considering it, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Jo (Australia)

Hope that helps.

Fleur de Lies: LLM International Human Rights Galway

In the UK, I've only applied for LSE (MSc Human Rights, worth taking a look if application deadline is not met!) but Essex is full of UN Special Rapporteurs for human rights matters and other reknown scholars, it has a very good reputation. Idem for Galway, which is especially good for anything related to transitional justice, international criminal law and the like (Schabas etc.). A friend of mine is studying human rights at Nottingham this year and another is working there in the same field; both seem to like it there so it looks like an option too.

The benefit of LSE is that is is also has a strong reputation for other fields than human rights whereas Essex for instance is really a HR center of excellence in that specific field but not too much beyond; if you're not quite sure whether HR will be the field you'll be spending the rest of your life in, it might be a good idea to pick LSE (may be the LLM, not the MSc in that event)...

hi everyone and sorry to answer so lately!
First of all, thanx everyone for your answers! one of my lecturers advised me approximately the same colleges you said. the thing is -as i dont know exactely what job do i want to do after- i told me that it could be good to have a LLM in public international law WITH some lectures about human rights (=> more opportunities) so i still dont know what to do...What do u think?
I'll probably do the LLM in Galway if i can get it, but i'll might take a year off (to work to collect money for the LLM+to do internships in NGO) cos it's to late to apply in colleges in uk. Is it a bad idea?

About Galway, my answer will be quick: it's brillant! Well, dont expect a huge city! It's more like a "town - city", but when you're a foreigner and u just there for one year or two, it's easier to meet people. People are so lovely and so welcoming, college is really cool (quite big, good lecturers, everything u need, even a bar!, lot of clubs and societies), pubs are great also (!), there are all the shops that u need, and a lot of students in Galway, ...
I'd say the only problems is the rain (this year it has been quite awful from november to march, but ok in september-october and since the beginning of april) -well, u're in ireland!- and the cost of life (a bit expensive but still ok).
Still brillant! I love it and dont wanna go back to France, it's a sign :)

Dont hesitate to ask me questions,
Good luck!

Hi everybody, I have just seen the post and I have a question related..
I have to choose a Ll.M. next year and I have some doubts.. I have been accepted in the cross border program in Human Rights and Internationational Justice Galway-Belfast and also in the LlM in International Criminal Law in Galway. My major is International Criminal Law, but I also would like to work with human rights, maybe ngos or academia..
Does anyone have any suggestions? which program would be better in your opinion? and what should I choose btw a research and a taught program?
Thanks, cheers!
