Legal Summer Program

I am admitted to USC School of Law.

I am not a native speaker and my English is quite good.

First, I thought that I would enroll in Legal Summer Program at USC undoubtedly.

However, my friend told me that this program is help you a little. It you can afford it, go for it. But it's not necessary to get into it.

Therefore, I am uncertain to register in this course. But I will enroll in English course taught by Language Academy instead since it's cheaper and longer (6 weeks).

Does anyone else has any opinion?

Should I go for this summer course since it's a bit expensive.

And if I will not go for this course, does it will effect my academic background.

Remark: In this time, I will study Introduction to US Legal System by myself.

Thank you for your post in advance.

It seems to me that these kinds of programs are a waste of money if your English is good. I was never at any disadvantage compared to the kids who did a legal summer program/course. Good luck with the decision!

raspberry, are you going to michigan summer? i have also been admitted by usc law. according to my former experience in an american summer school, i consider the value of summer school is really limited. but i will go to michigan summer anyway. if your english is quite good, and the incentive for attending a summer school is to get adjusted to the academic environment earlier, i dont recommend you to do summer school since i dont think it is cost-effective. but if you simply want to find somewhere to spend your summer and meet different llm students, i guess the program in michigan is fine.

Hello. Speaking as an American who studied abroad as an undergraduate (in Spain), I believe that participation in a summertime academic program could prove to be a very useful experience for Raspberry. I've personally discovered that true mastery of any foreign language requires immersion in the foreign culture. The dynamism of actual conversations with "real people" cannot be replicated in any "language academy" classroom!

Additionally, the colloquial interactions and conversations that you would undoubtedly have with students and faculty during the summer program would present an ideal chance for you to practice "conversational" American english.

As Bsmzel suggested, simply "going through the motions" of the summer course could also provide you with an effective introduction to the American academic landscape and prepare you for what you'll encounter as an LL.M. student in the fall. American law schools (even "laid back" schools like "Southern Cal") can be very provincial places for newcomers. As such, a bit of early exposure to this environment may reap dividends down the line.

The summer course (if appropriately structured) should also serve as an effective introduction to American "common law" principles. In my opinion, this factor alone could very well justify the cost of attendance for you.

-Best of luck!
