rehab: Queen Mary vs. City University

Hi everyone.
I am new in this forum and I could use some help from the seniors or from anyone who has an idea.
I got offers from Queen Mary and City University. And I cant decide which one to prefer.. I heard really awful things about City at this forum. Is it really that bad ??
And there is one more thing, Queen Mary's offer is conditinal and I will need one more year to fulfill this condition. Does QMUL worth waiting for 1 year or should I prefer City ??
By the way City's alumni are very fascinating; Tony Blair, Margaret Thatcher, Mahadma Ghandi and so on.. If City was so bad then what the hell all these people have done here ??
Thanks..

Well I would tend to say that Queen Mary would be the prime choice, being a college of the University of London, well renowned for providing great courses. City is not part of UoL, although still a relatively reputable school. I was under the impression that Blair was an Oxford boy, as was Thatcher, and I think Gandhi went to UCL, so I'm not sure about that.

I would say that a 'London LLM' is to be preferred, and that Queen Mary would provide a better level of teaching and prospects. From what my tutors have told me, employers really do distinguish between Oxbridge and University of London LLM's, and the rest; it may be naive to think is not true, this being another thing to bear in mind.

Thanks for your reply Brett..
I was thinking the same way as you.. but I just had second thoughts after getting the "conditional" offer from the QMUL. And considering City's ranking in the Times good university guide, it seemed to be a good choice. But apparently it is not..
Thanks again

Hi,
Tony Blair, Margaret Thatcher and Mahadma Ghandi are definitely not alumni of City University.
City is surely famous for Business or Economics, but as regards law...

City university has nowhere near the reputation of Queen Mary. It would be madness to choose City over QM.

I'd beg to differ - it is very probable that some, if not all the above, studied their bar exams at City's Inns of Court School of Law.

However, this professional course of study has little bearing on whether City is a good provider of academic LLM courses.

QMUL is way better than City University. But if you dont want to wait for a year then you can go there. why dont you look at universities like Manchester, Bristol, Edinburgh, Durham, Nottingham or Leeds. These universities are better than City for LLM.

You may be right but I dont know how it would be to live in a small city.. I would prefer being in London.. You know 1 year is a quiet long time... Actually I can wait for 1 year but I just wanted to be sure if it is worth it..
By the way, you say Manchester, Bristol and Durham universities are better than City but how about comparing them to Queen Mary??

QM of course has an advantage of being a UoL college and this degree will be an advantage over City. Everybody has a different point of view. I would consider Manchester and Bristol after QM but Durham is very good for Commercial Law.

jperry: Queen Mary vs. City University

Don't be fooled by the hype. Blair, Thatcher and Gandhi never went to City University. They went to the Inns of Court School of Law. They went there because it was the only place you could qualify as a barrister: it had a monopoly. That monopoly is now ended. The Inns of Court School of Law and City University merged recently. So, the law school side of City ( as opposed the to professional qualifications side) has no illustrious history. In fact, it started only in 1989. It is a bit cheeky to claim that these are graduates, when they just did the bar in the ICSL!

Gandhi went to UCL. Thatcher and Blair went to Oxford.

Thanks jperry.. It has been very enlightning. I was very surprised when I saw those names on the web site..
So, are there anyone else who has received a conditional offer from a university?? do you know what is the procedure for it. For example would I have to make a new application after fulfilling the condition??

I'm sorry for asking this but rehab, you've received a conditional offer for Postgraduate study, haven't you?

If right is there any similar guides for Undergraduate study. I'm interested in City University London but mainly in Finance and Banking instead of Law.

I apologise again for asking because it's not fully connected to the question. In addition, I hope it's not a big problem.

Best wishes ,
cl1ck

No need to apologise cl1ck, I would love to help you out, but to be honest I have no idea about neither undergraduates nor finance. Unfortunately I cant help you.
You can search for one in the internet and I strongly recommend you to talk to the alumni or current students of the university that you want to study. It helps a lot.
So dont give up searching, good luck to you.

Thank you for your kind reply rehab. Thanks for the advice either. I have already tried it and still do it. Everyday new questions connected to undergrad study, city, london etc.
In fact, that's how I find this website :)

About current students and alumni I haven't found any so far but I won't give up.

Good luck to you, too.

Goodbye.
