Hello everyone,

I got my LLM degree from an American university and I want to get my JSD. I know most of law schools in the US limit their doctoral admissions to only those applicants who have enrolled in, or completed, their school’s own LL.M. program. My question do anyone knows schools with good ranks that would accept students to JSD that they didn't get their LLM from.

I will appreciate any information

One of my ex-LLM classmates got his SJD at one university in Indiana (Indianapolis). Can't remember which one though.

I had the opportunity to meet with Prof Weiler from NYU, who runs the graduate program there. He mentioned there is no formal requirement as such, but that NYU LLM students would naturally have a better chance at getting into the JSD because they would have had the opportunity to form academic relationships, build up a prospective research agenda... When there are only 5-6 places in a JSD program and the Faculty is sitting around evaluating you, they will, of course, give the upper hand to a student whose work they are actually familiar with.

I imagine this would be the case with any other US graduate program -- JSD places are very limited. In the UK, I don't think there is a similar mindset. I knew plenty of DPhils when I was at Oxford who did their master's level degrees elsewhere. Same at Cambridge.

Depends on your field of study, and who you want to supervise you too -- I would have thought those were the important considerations.

Thanks guys for the info.

if you know other law school in the U.S. I'll appreciated. that I checked both the website of University of Chicago and Cornell University and both have the requirement of acceptance only candidates who already enrolled in their LLM. Program.

If I'm not mistaken University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, presents you with such an opportunity, however, one needs to bear in mind, that it's no mean feat to got admitted there...

Berkley does accept students who did not purse their LL.M. with them to go for a JSD in Berkley.

Duke, Pitt Law, Washington Univ in St Louis and several other schools require LL.M from any other law school. in some of the schools, the LL.M is not required for pursuing JSD/SJD.
