London or Melbourne/Sydney? pls kindly help

hi, i am in a dilemma now... i come from Hong Kong and got offers from:
Englnd: Queen Mary/ Birmingham
Australia: U of Melbourne/Sydney/ UNSW

As u can see, the england schools are not among the top lines while the Australia schools are top within the country...But on the other hand, England seems to be a more traditional place for studying Common Law.

I really dunno how to choose --top school in Australia or a second band school in England?

Which would be more well-received by law firms?

Queen mary is part of the University of London intercollegiate programme which has an excellent reputation. The Guardian ranks it within the top UK universities: education.guardian.co.uk/universityguide2005/

Hi...
If I were you I would opt for QML for the following reasons.
1. It is part of the Uni of London and this means you can undertake courses from KCL, UCL and SOAS as well. Not sure if there are any restrictions as to the number of courses though, chances are these are minimal
2. If you intend to work in the UK or in an international law firm, there are several such firms in London with offices in Hong Kong. You would have a greater chance of being offered a job than anyone from any other country in Asia, Africa where these firms do not have offices. The situation in Aus might be similar, I do not know.
3. QML LLM is awarded by the Uni of London. London Uni has a greater credibility and international presence compared to Aus Unis (my personal opinion, few might disagree).
4. QML is quite famous for IP and Business Law courses if thats what you are looking for. Also if you are academically oriented it is one of the 7 or 8 Unis that have 5* rating for research in Law. 5* is the highest rating awarded for excellence in research in the UK. Other such Unis are Ox, Cam, Durham, UCL, LSE, Keele and Southampton.
5. Its London after all!!! amazing place to live and/ or study!!! Plus you can go travelling in Europe over weekends!

Hi. I think it depends on what legal field do u want to specialise in.I heard that Queens' Mary has a very good reputation on baking and finance.

I got the offer from birmingham too

QMU is very famous for banking and finance. i got the advice from my friends who working for international law firm and natioanal bank in my country.

Hi...
About the option of taking courses from the other Colleges of Uni of London the restrictions are that you have to take half of your total credits at QML and that you won't be able to take a course from any other college if that course is available at QML itself.

I would suggest UoL, any of them... in any area.
Board participants have mentioned a number of reasons, and I agree with all of them... in addition I might say Hong Kong is awesome city, so is London - so another reason (besides reputation, employment rates, rankings) is the place... :)

actually i have always wanted to go to England since i love the Bristish accent (perhaps influenced by Hugh Grant!)

so thanks for ur opinion and support!
I think i will end up at QM, just waiting for UCL's reply (which is likely to be a rejection letter since KCL has already rejected me =-()

Hi! I am applying to QM too, I liked their programme quite a lot and the fact that it is in central London (even though I do not like big cities, but there is where the greater chances are)!

But this post is being written mostly to say that I appreciated the fact that you could tell in this board that you were not accepted in a certain university.

It seems to me that this board often works like a vanity fair («I got accepted on Oxbridge», «I was accepted by LSE») and it is refreshing to read someone being sincere and honest here!

hi shireen, i'm from hk too.. frankly, law schools in UK esp London definitely enjoys a much higher reputation than AUS ones in the eyes of employers here. i got the impression that they rank overseas students in the following order : (1) UK & within UK, obviously oxbridge comes first and London the second, they are kind of less familiar with other famous school in other part of the world and (2) Canada and (3) AUS

So i think QM won't be a bad choice. But note that from what i've heard, it seems that the intercollegiate program has already been stopped & students can only take courses from their own Uni & also heard from my current classmates (who graduated from UCL and King's) that UCL quitted the London U ~ not sure... pls check ~ good luck with ur applications ~!

I personally do not rate QMUL.
For reasons that do not really need justification.

Melbourne University i do know for a fact is the best university in australia.

I feel I need to make a suggestion here about attending an Australian university. The university of sydney is an excellent institution, and the oldest in Australia. It is incredibly easy for top USyd law students from Australia to get jobs in the UK and in America. In fact, both the US and the UK have recently started aggressive programs towards hiring Australian lawyers. I work for a top tier firm in Australia that has links with many UK and Asian law firms, we also have offices in Hong Kong. Working for a top tier Australian firm would generally mean you can very easily transfer to work in Hong Kong (or anywhere else for that matter). I think you should seriously consider studying in Australia. Of course, the weather is also better :)
