Perceptions of UK Law schools in AUSTRALIA
Hi Everyone, Fri Apr 25, 2008 03:11 PM If there's anyone out there from Oz, I'd like to get some advice. I am planning on returning home (to Australia) after I complete an LLM in human rights law in the UK. However, I am not sure which university to choose. Amongst many other considerations in choosing a uni (such as staff, courses, location) I feel that I must bear in the mind the reputation of the university in AUSTRALIA. Can anyone comment on what unis have a good reputation in Oz? I know Oxbridge, LSE etc.. would be great, but unfortunately, I'm not really at that level. I will be looking at: Essex, Lancaster, Nottigham, Galway, Edinburgh, Warwick etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks guys Jo |

This is a very interesting question - I have a British education and I am thinking of working in Oz and was wondering the same thing!Fri Apr 25, 2008 03:33 PM Jo, you'll know better than me about this - but I get the distinct impression from Aussie friends that academic snobbery is not as rife in Australia as it is the UK. Some of the uni's you mention above (Warwick, Edinburgh, Nottingham) fall into the Russell Group which has gained the reputation of being the UK version of the US Ivy League. www.russellgroup.ac.uk/ These are all excellent universities, and I'm sure Australian academics will know this (I'm not so sure about Australian law firms). Notably, most of the leading British and US (London-based) law firms recruit from Russell Group universities. (Galway is an Irish uni so I'm not sure how that fairs in relation to UK Russell Group unis). |

There are a few Aussies at Edinburgh. One who has a family member that is the dean of one of the law school's in Oz. I also gather from my Aussie friends that uni labels are not as important there as the quality of the programme and what students gain from it. I do know that at Edinburgh there are quite a few scholarships for Aussie students as the students I know are on full-rides. If you are keen to study human rights as well, Edinburgh just brought on two additional faculty members to add to their already strong human rights faculty. Good luck!
