Law & Economics in Canada?
Is it feasible to pursue an LLM in law & economics in Canada? Central Canada (Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Kingston) would be ideal. I know there are excellent programs in the US but cost and distance would be major issues.Sun Apr 27, 2008 10:30 PM Also, are there career guides for law and economics graduates? Michael Trebilcock at U of T is fantastic and very well respected, as is their Law & Economics program generally. They've really put together a great workshop series which LL.M.'s can enroll in and which consistently attracts top scholars from the U.S. as speakers.Sun Apr 27, 2008 11:04 PM In terms of career prospects, Law & Economics isn't so much an area of practice as a mode of thinking. As such, while Law & Economics is often associated with (1) corporate, securities and financial services law, (2) international trade and development, or (3) public policy analysis, it is something else entirely in its own right and actually pops up in some pretty surprising places (equality and constitutional rights for instance). Accordingly, should your interests draw you to any of these practice areas, there will likely be opportunities to apply Law & Economics principles. Best of luck! |

Thanks, I've head Trebilcock's name and I'll look into U of T for more details. I'm actually a practicing lawyer right now but long term I might want a career change and I was wondering what else might be out there if I earned a law & econ LLM. If I was just going to return to work at a law firm afterwards I wouldn't bother with the degree, I'm hoping it could open doors that are otherwise shut at the moment.

You can also go at University of Montreal to work with Ejan Mackaay which publish books and reviews on L&E. Although I think you need to obtain permission to write your thesis in english. As for the employment opportunities, my experience is that, except if known and appreciated by your interviewers, L&E is still theory that will not help you much finding a job. But as I felt it since I file my thesis, you will feel you understand commercial law much differently than other who will hardly understand your position....
