Hello Lawyers,

I am a LLB graduate from Mumbai going to London for LLM in Sept 2008. This will be a good time to network and get to know each other. I have offers from UCL, KCL and QMUL, but it all depends on my results. I am planning on doing IP Law or Commercial Law. So keeping my fingers crossed.

Just reply on this post with your details or mail me at pratishpanjabi@gmail.com.

Keep in touch Lawyers.

Hi Vic

I dont know much about the Environmental Law program of QMUL, but I do know that it is there pilot batch. So just confirm the rep of QM in Env Law. QM is well known for IP Law and Commercial Law.

How have you been? How were the exams?

I haven't zeroed in any college yet. I am waiting for my results and then only I can decide where to go. But it would be one from UCL, KCL, or QMUL. What about you, which college have you decided to go?

Hi Pratish,

What would be your actual reason to go to UK? Just an LLM or work after that. I read in a blog by someone stating that it is always wise to take the QLTT if you intend to work there as an LLM in the UK will not necessarily get you a job...provided you only want to do it for knowledge sake or some other reason better known to you. No offensive meant but please clarify..wouldn't QLTT a better idea if you really need to look UK from a work perspective?

Hi Manu

QLTT would definitely be a good option before going to UK. But do you think that you will directly get a job after appearing for QLTT. Getting a job in UK is next to impossible even if you have appeared for QLTT. I have spoken to people who have got a job after 1 year of search even after giving QLTT and LLM. You cannot go to UK from work perspective unless you ready to strive for searching a job for around 6 mths to a year.

Pursuing an LLM has only one reason for most of the people and that is to gain expertise in that specific field of Law. If anyone pursues LLM from a job perspective that too in UK, he would come to know of the reality once they complete the LLM.

An international degree shouldn't be always pursued from the work perspective. But an international LLM would be an experience of lifetime and you are going to gain from that experience for the rest of your life. Please people be more open minded towards international education.

Hi Manu

I agree with Pratish. Just the QLTT won't get you a job and neither will the LLM.

You can also read my blog on this site for more info.

All the best.

Hi Pratish and Prashbez,

Many thanks for the reply. Had read Prashbez's blog, on that basis queried Pratish. Well, that's for sure an international LLM done for the right reasons is no harm at all in terms of money and time....but than there is no right answer on how to get a job in the UK for a person who has an LLB from outside UK and who than has cleared the pre-requisite---QLTT.
I pondered enough but trust me what I understand,it is purely your luck to get a job there, no matter how qualified you are. I have read many blogs primarily in www.legalweek.com and it's a mix.....some say u can make it some say u can't.....
I guess when you talk about working in the UK with an LLB from India than the cheaper option is to qualify the QLTT which would enable you to work as a solicitor....whether you end up getting a job is beside the point.
Finally, would like to say that all my knowledge is primarily based on the info. that I have gathered from various sites...if you guys have any real life info gathered from your friends in the UK (working or looking for work), I would be more than pleased to listen and learn from you.
Take care and have a blessed day.

Hi Manu

Clearing the QLTT is always better than not having that qualification. That said it's not a guarantee of getting a job and it's expensive. Your previous work experience also matters. Of course luck plays a major role in everything. But your marks in the LLM can also be a factor.

Friend of mine did his LLM in 2003 from UK and it took him almost 2 years to finally land a job in UK. I had a chat with him the other day and he was of the view that it's tougher now to get a job than it was 4-5 years ago despite Indian lawyers being hired by foreign law firms.
