hi,
i am an indian law graduate holding a B.A.,LL.B(hons.) degree. I am planning to pursue LLM from New Zealand.
Can someone tell me regarding the reqiurements for practising in New Zealand (for foreign graduates) after my LLM............i mean whether one needs to get his degree accredited by any authority in New Zealand or does one need to clear any bar exam etc?
any kind of info. wud be helpful.....cheers

I am not a New Zealand practitioner so I can't help you on this.

However, i think you will have to contact the District Law Society to get them to assist you with this query. It might also be easier (and more useful) for you to qualify in Australia and then subsequently seek mutual recognition for practise in NZ.

In order to be admitted to the Bar in NZ, one must have completed:

1. An approved LLB degree
2. A university course in Legal Ethics if the LLB is completed after 31 July 2000
3. A Professional Legal Studies Course (PLSC)

There are two institutions which offer the PLSC:

Hi Leanne,

I am looking into gaining admission into Wellington through trans-tasman mutual recognition and I am just wondering if you happen to know if applicants are required to be present at court for the ceremony? (or could a counsel represent the applicant and run the process in the absence of the applicant)?

I am still reading for my LLB at the moment and I'm not intending to go into practice after my LLB, so I am not familiar with the details of the course. I think you should be able to find the answers to your question in the websites I have given above. If not, you can always email them.

Hi i have recently applied to new zealand for admission as a lawyer. Firstly you have to get your BA LLB assessed from New Zealand Council of Legal Council you can find there brochure at (www.nzcle.org.nz/overseas_qualifications.html) you have to almost 1000 NZ $ for this !!!..........then they will indicate which subjects or courses are required for you to be admitted as a legal practitioner in the High Court of New Zealand. You can then incorporate these subjects in you LLM or what ever suits you best. But be sure what is the level of assessment as a simple LLM without assessment may not help you much.
