Canadian LLM- job prospects
Hello everybody........I have done my LLB in India and am working for a law firm in delhi. I plan to do an LLM from one of te top canadian univs (like Mc Gill, U of T, Osgoode or British Columbia).Sun Jul 06, 2008 05:28 PM I wud be very grateful if any one can tell me about the job prospects after doing an LLM from one of the above univs. Do top US or UK firms directly recruit LLM grads from these univs or is one's choice of jobs restricted to canadian law firms. Also, what are te prospects of landing in a canadian law firm. Any help wud be most gratefully appreciated. Thanx Jeet |

I guess you can say that just as everywhere, jobs in law firms are really hard to find for immigrants. For someone from india, you can always try in Toronto because there is a big Indian community there that could be sensible to your position. But then again, networking and really high grades would be required. As much as i know, top Us firms dont hire here so much... Uk firm do so sometimes but they will usualy do so when someone have more than 2 years of experience in canada in a great law firm.Tue Jul 08, 2008 08:41 PM Bottom line, the competition here is really hard, most lawyer get hired in large firms before finnisishing their LLB. therefore, large law firm do not care to much for LLM graduate since they usualy have all junior lawyers already hired in advance.... Anything is always possible, but dreaming to much can hurt...try to think few years in advance...apply 2 years in advance just to get internship because once you graduate.. if you dont have a job.... chances are, its already too late and you would end up far from large law firm... which should not be somethings bad if that is what you want. |

Hi there it's different strokes for different folks. In Nigeria the concern is about how to get a Canadian Study permit that is the first and major problem, as the embassy makes it so difficult to get the visa. Fri Jul 11, 2008 11:11 AM The CVOfficers usually act very arbitrarily and do not give good reasons for denying the granting of visas. They think all Nigerians are criminals and all want to go to canada without coming back and that is far from the truth. I have seen people with full scholarships; good grades; good accounts and a very strong link to Nigeria denied. I pray I get my own visa as I have submitted my application almost two months now without any response from the embassy. [Edited by aydewale on 11 Jul 2008] |
