Oh, I'm sure there will be more than enough shop talk over pints in the Fall. Briefly, however, my research is in the area of financial services regulation (forgive me, I'm a securities lawyer).

Hoping the faculty and the college will let me begin my studies in January (might need to have my gall bladder out before then) and so I hope to see you for pints in the Winter!

I had to have that done last Christmas! Could have wrecked my LLB. As for the MSt, what is your topic area/supervisor, and did you apply to Linacre as one of your 2 preferences?

I had put Linacre down as my second choice. My proposed supervisor is Mike McNair, topic is in legal history. Do you think they would let me begin the M.St in January, or would I have to ask to defer?

It sounds like you'd have a shot. However, all you can really do is apply and wait like everyone else. Apply to Oxford, Cambridge and maybe a few of the London colleges. See how it goes. Good luck.

Anyways - back to topic! Not long to our first pint in Oxford! :-)

Hello all,

I have created a facebook group for incoming BCL/MJUR/Research students for 2008/2009. It is called 'Oxford Law Postgraduate Freshers 2008.' I am a second year DPhil who was one of the Law Board Reps in 2007/2008 and someone created one for us last year and it turned out to be an excellent resource! I am at Christ Church and have loved it!

May I suggest we all meet at the KINGS ARMS (really well known so you will get there easily) in the front room just to your right as you enter the door at a time a place best for you guys? When are most of you arriving?

I look forward to meeting you all and please do pass on the link to any incoming class members!

Thanks for creating the community . Great job.
Kings arms would be great, but was just wondering whether sitting out in the Turf would be a better option. Just a thought.

Hi All, I'm Singaporean and will hopefully be starting the BCL at Lincoln in September if I can manage to get my paperwork there in time. I really am looking forward to the programme, since I spent my last 2 years in New York where the beer is absolute pisswater for the most part. In any case, do inform me if you organise anything. I will try my best to be amusing.

Hello fellow Christ Church-er, I would contact Melanie Radburn at ChCh re the accommodation question. If you don't get accommodation it's not the end of the world though, I don't have any and am looking for it soon - stay in touch on that one! My email is available on the fb group!

To all- On the turf - its got so many rooms and areas and gets so busy you can't really find people when you don't know who they are... at the KA, it's easy to find people and indoors! Plus the food is better in my humble op.! If anything like last year, we will move as the night goes on! If you guys prefer the urf organise away and I will put it on fb, but tradition says the KA guys! Lol...

Join FB for sure as we all have events together and we'd love to see you at the pub. I look very much forward to seeing you over at Manor Rd in -1 and 0th week!

Hi, I also have a question about BCL admissions at Oxford. I read the program description and it sounds very good and it seems like the perfect kind of program for me. But I'm wondering... what grades do you have to get in your first law degree to be reasonably qualified (have a chance) at getting in to the BCL? Right now I'm doing a JD and my first degree isn't in law. I mean, do you have to get straight A's, 4.0 GPA? And also, do most people on the program come from top law schools? Like Harvard, Yale, etc? And one more thing, how much do extracurricular activities count?

Thanks!

Bender: Oxford Colleges BCL/Mjur

Oxford states that it requires a "first", which most people seem to agree means placing in the upper 10% of your law school class. Depending on your law school, that cutoff is usually around a GPA of 3.6 or 3.7, I think.

I know there are people attending the BCL this year from various Canadian universities, so you certainly don't need a JD from Harvard or Yale. I have no idea what happens as you head further down the quality spectrum than that, though. (i.e., the Southern Las Vegas School of Law and AC Repair).

As for extracurriculars, I can only tell you that I didn't say a whole lot about mine when I applied; I got the impression that the focus was more on academics than on anything else. I'd be surprised to learn that they play a substantial role in the admissions process. (As always, however, I stand ready to be corrected.)
