Hi,

I'm thingking of applying to some universities in europe, could anybody please share their experience about the living cost in these countries : sweden, norway and finland? does 1000 usd a month is enough to support living with minimum standards (food, housing and study materials?)...

looking forward to your response guys...

Hi,

I have studied in Helsinki for a month and I had a hard time sticking to my budget (the piece of cake that costed me 7 euros still hurts deep inside of me) 1000 usd are 680 euros... well... I guess you'd make it though you'd have to undergo some sacrifices (i.e. nightlife). Have a look to this site www.soa.fi/eng/index.htm
BTW, Norway is the most expensive one
Good luck

Thank you for answering,

I guess adding additional 20 euros wont be a problem for me, so probably i am gonna spend 700 euros a month.

As for the night life, i won't take that into consideration, when living in europe i prefer being a nerd rather than a socialita.

Oh btw does anyone have any descriptions about raw materials for cooking, i guess when living in europe i prefer cook my own meal than buying food at cafe's or restaurants.

Any other descriptions about cost of living in norway or sweden?

Oh, I forgot to mention:
You should also take into account that transferring money from your American bank account to the new one has a considerable cost -my case: 15 euros+/-;

if you decide to use your card directly in Europe's ATM's... they take a percentage of what you withdraw. I.e., everytime I withdraw, they retain 4% of the total amount plus 1% when the currency is different from that of my bank.
Solution... have a look to the online banks existing in the country so that you could avoid commissions.

Cost of living is of course always depending from the location. Speaking for Germany it is absolutely possible to live with 700 EUR a month, as long as you don't chose one of the very expensive cities as Munich or Düsseldorf. But as our colleague already mentioned: an excessive nightlife won't be financed with this amount... :-)

Best,
Eric

Hi,

I lived off 600 EUR a month without any probs when I did my LLM in Saabrücken, so I would say you can live like a king! :)

Good luck with your decision...
