Hi guys,

I wanted to know if anyone here studies at Bond University Law School. I am considering studing at Bond and have been offered a place. however as I am still waiting to hear from University of Melbourne School of Law, I wanted to get some feedback regarding the two schools.
I do know that Bond is a second rate law school but growing in reputation. I would appreciate any kind of feedback on the two schools in terms of the programs' qualities and also the quality of life in the two cities.

Hi Mary,

Yes, Bond is a second/third tier law school with a growing reputation. However, if you have to pick between Uni of Melb and Bond Uni, the choice is clear - Uni of Melb is the way to go. Bond Uni is fine if you want to work in Australia but Uni of Melb is more internationally recognised. :)

Yeah, I went to Melbourne law school and say to you that if you get accepted into Melbourne law school then you must go there. Melbourne law school is arguably the best law school in Australia and is aiming to be one of the best in the world.

I did my undergraduate in Queensland and currently live and work in Queensland. Bond University is rubbish and has a reputation as a university where dumb rich kids go when they can't get into any other decent university.

Hi Mary

I would have to say that the opinions you were given above are very one sided. Both Universities have internationally acclaimed reputations. They both offer the same qualification that will be recognised as an LLM. I can tell you that the differences are that you can finish your degree quicker at Bond as they have 3 semesters a year. I have alot of friends who have studied law at Bond and are now practising in London, Sydney, Canada and even China. They've told me they would never study anywhere else because of the community feel and personalised attention you get there. I know that Melbourne Uni is a very large uni where many students just fade in the croude.
You also need to think about where you want to live and the kind of life experience you want to get. The Gold Coast and Melbourne are very different. If you are looking for some warm and sunny weather then Gold Coast is the place for you. On the other hand if you want all seasons in one day and a very busy city lifestyle then Melbourne is your choice. Good luck in your decision making.

I disagree with the statement that 'the opinions you were given above are very one sided'.

In particular, I think that my mention of Bond University as a second/third tier law school with growing reputation is accurate because the University is relatively new and does not have the long-standing history like that of University of Melbourne.

Also, the rankings of Melbourne University in international rankings is prima facie evidence that the university is more internationally known compared to Bond University. I have no doubt that the Bond JD allows graduates to practise overseas but the Uni Melb JD definitely allows practising in more countries. For example, Bond University is not recognised by the Ministry of Law in Singapore for the purposes of gaining admission into the local legal profession whilst the Melbourne University is.

In relation to the other contributor comments, I must agree that the comment about 'rich kids' is uncalled for but I personally have those comments from peers while studying at University of Queensland so these opinions about Bond University do actually exist.

With that said, I agree with your comments regarding Bond having more personal attention and the lifestyle difference between Gold Coast and Melbourne.
