LLM v. JD/Maitrise
Would you recommend the JD/Maitrise from Cornell over an LLM at the Sorbonne or Assas? Are the LLM programs new in France? Why has no one heard of them?

I assume that LLMs are the equivalent of what the French refer to as Mastere (formerly DESS and DEA). I think that the Cornell option would make more sense if you want to practice law internationally...even if the two French universities you mention are excellent for law in France. Even if you want to work in Paris later I would say that the Cornell option would still be better to approach Paris law firms... In my opinion France is not big on LLMs and French students go to the US or UK for that. That's just my opinion and I am sure that lots of French people would disagree. |

HiThu Oct 16, 2008 05:07 PM The degree you mention is far better than an LLM. LLMs are in general below Mastere (DEA or DESS) level, and that is especially true when it comes to LLMs at French universities. A JD is also much better than an LLM. |

I disagree with the post that says a JD is better than an LLM. First, you need a JD before you can get an LLM. Second, in the UK, a law degree is a LLB, then you move on to the LLM program. In the US you need an undergraduate degree before moving on to do a law degree (Juris Doctorate).
