Study at NUS Law - Asia's Global Law School

Dear friends,

Today is the 1st of October, and NUS Law is pleased to announce that the application process for our LLM and PhD programmes (admission in July/August 2009) is now open!

The deadline for applications is 1st December 2008 for the regular programmes and 1st January 2009 for the LLM (International Business Law) programme in Shanghai. The following programmes are available:

By coursework - LLM, with or without concentrations (concentrations are: Corporate and Financial Services Law, Intellectual Property and Technology Law, International and Comparative Law, Asian Legal Studies, Maritime Law, and International Business Law). The specialised LLM in International Business Law is taught in both Singapore and Shanghai, while the other programmes are offered entirely in Singapore. Applications for the dual degree NYU@NUS programme have also opened - see www.nyunus.org.

By research thesis - LLM and PhD

We welcome queries if you have any. First, be sure to visit our website at http://www.law.nus.edu.sg/prospective/postgraduate.htm and click on the grey information links on the left of that page. You will find the application forms there, as well as other relevant information such as tuition fees, scholarships and accommodation. The application forms, in particular, will detail all the documents/materials that you will need to present. We can grant a waiver of TOEFL/IELTS requirements if you have studied law entirely in English, and can submit a document from your school to attest to that fact.

We currently have a great class comprising students from over 40 countries, and are committed to maintaining our high level of student diversity and quality. We look forward to receiving your applications!

Dr. Alan Tan
Vice-Dean and Associate Professor, NUS Law

Hello from Panama.

My question is about the tuition fee. It says for the LLM (International Business Law), that it will be S$10,000.

Is that amount for the entire year or is it per semester?

Thanks in advance.

Hi everybody,

I'm a student in the current International Business Law batch for the class of 09.

So we just moved, after nearly three awesome months in Singapore, to Shanghai and get our life started here.

I'm from Germany and maybe I can give all prospective friends some inside view to NUS Law and especially regarding IBL, all from my student perspective.

Wish you all the best with your applications. It's a bit of work with all the documents but I can tell you one thing: It is worth all the hazzle and even more!

Cheers

In response to the last two posts:

1. We only have an intake in August, not in January. However, we are open to students enrolling in August and taking a short break in September to go back and take their Bar examinations.

2. We are strict with our TOEFL/IELTS requirements. As such, we would advise anyone who scores lower than the minimum to re-take the TOEFL/IELTS. You can submit your applications first by the deadline, and forward the TOEFL/IETLS results to us later when you receive them. That is entirely acceptable.

We look forward to receiving your applications.

In response to the above query - no, we do not use a "rolling" basis. All applications are accepted during the application period, and assessed once the deadline passes. If students need to have an expedited decision, we can accommodate that.

If your TOEFL results only come out after the application deadline, you should send your application forms first, and submit the results later.

Dear Sir

I am applying for the LLM program in IBL and Corporate and Financial Services. I have duly filled two forms for the same. 1. However, it is stated on the website that the original TOEFL score sheet would be required. Would it be possible that the original sheet be attched in one form and referred in the other one?
2. I had indicated on the TOEFL site to send score to NUS Department of Law. How can i check if my score sheet has been delivered to you and thereafter send the forms accordingly.

Your response would really help me in sending the form on time. Due to some postal issues i have still not recieved my original TOEFL sheet and in the event that my score has been delivered to NUS, I would be able to meet the candidature requirements.

Thanks and Regards

Applicants who have studied for their LLB in English (such as Indian students) can submit a request for waiver of TOEFL/IELTS. This request can be submitted along with the application form.

However, if you have taken TOEFL/IELTS and attained a good score, please do indicate this. It will serve to confirm your aptitude in English.

As for the earlier enquiry, you will need to send in only one TOEFL/IELTS score even if you are applying for both a regular LLM and the LLM - International Business Law. As long as you indicate the NUS as the recipient of the score, we will be sure to obtain it. Otherwise, we will get back to you to let you know if we don't obtain the score.

Mr Tan
I am a Indian Student who has applied for LLM in Intellectual Property Rights I have sent my application to NUS along with a certified copy of my IELTS score sheet.I know that as an Indian student who has been educated in English,I do not require IELTS.However having read a few earlier posts where you stated that if my score is good,it would help my admissions,i decided to send the scores.Hence i have not requested for a waiver from the IELTS/TOEFL requirement.(I have a 8.5 overall band score). Now i have encountered a problem.I have asked for a additional test report form to be sent to NUS and there has been some delay in this being sent.Hence it has not reached NUS before the 1st December deadline. Will this jeopardize my admission process.I am quite worried. The admission form along with other required documents should have reached NUS before the 1st dec deadline

To all enquirers above:

It is more convenient if you direct enquiries directly (by the p.m. mode) to our email account.

On general enquiries for students graduating only in June or July 2009, what we will do is to assess your applications as we have received them. On that basis, we may offer you a conditional acceptance in April 2009, which is subject to your fulfilling certain requirements in your final examinations.

Best regards

It is difficult to outline what one's chances are, as it is relative to the competitive pool every year. Generally, scholarship holders have good academic results (First or Distinction level), and have excellent extra-curricular achievements e.g. publications, national- or international-level prominence in sports, the arts, moot court competitions, etc.

Mr Tan
I am a law student in India, currently in the penultimate year. I would want to apply later this year for the NYU@NUS program in 2010 and I wanted to enquire if I can apply, and get conditional admission since my results wont be out in October 09 and i'll have another semester to study. Moreover my 7th semester result cant be calculated in aggregate because i missed an exam due to meeting with an accident.
Ive been worried sick about this, so if could let me in on how it works.
Thankyou

Just out of curiosity, what is the background of the average applicant?

the word that has usually been around is that they look for 65% and above.. but Mr. Tan has emphasised quite a few times that they look at the overall package.

surprisingly, we have never come to know about this one particular criteria despite this forum going on over the years. the percentage issue has never been discussed once all the admissions are announced, becomes a thankless exercise actually- one is obviously engrossed in celebrating his/ her success story and finding out who are the other people joining.

whatever it is, I feel that NUS definitely remains much more competitive than most UK/ US varsities leaving the creme de' la creme aside... so, the percentage has to play a significant, if not the biggest role in successful admission.

Of course, for candidates like Whistle, its a very practicabe solution and really nice on the part of NUS to send an early offer.

Hi all,
I found out yesterday that I got in for the LLM in IP and Tech law! So excited! I replied immediately!
Question
1 - they tell you if you got a scolarship with you acceptence?
2- I also see that there is no possibility of getting the Service Obligation grant thing for LLM coursework students.. Does anyone know more about this?
Congratulations to all!
