LLM 2009/2010 - University of Edinburgh
Think about which course offers the classes that are most in line with what you want to learn. As an Edi grad I am going to say Edi is fab for international law, but I haven't studied at Leiden. In the end, you will get as much from an LLM as you put into it so keep that in mind no matter where you go. Be sure to take advantage of all extra-curricular activities and lectures offered at the uni. Tue Apr 07, 2009 06:14 PM Guys, need your advice. I would prefer Edinburgh Univeristy....my cousins and my brother is studying LLM there...!! He says its awesome for International Law and It is the Best for IT and IP law programmes. For Technology and Intellectual Property courses Edinburgh is ranked in the top 3 Universities of UK |

Hey there, Mon Apr 13, 2009 08:52 AM I got accepted too. I took them 4 weeks as well. However it seems to me that they accept everybody, or is it just my impression? |

Hi, Mon Apr 13, 2009 09:53 AM I am not sure about that. I've heard that there are only 140 places for LLM students at UoE. If this is the case, the recruitment is rather competitive. Secondly, I am sure that people who were rejected aren't that eager to write on this board about it. I was accepted at UoE (LLM in Commercial Law) and at QMUL and I am inclined to choose UoE over QMUL. What would be your choice? Best of luck, Marvs |

Hey, Mon Apr 13, 2009 01:36 PM I am still awaiting reply from UCL and QMUL, so I will decide once I'll receive their decision. However I would choose UE over QMUL too. |

Yes I do approve of QMUL if you really want to stick to london. so i dunno if what you have heard is true or not..! |

Hello everyone!Tue Apr 14, 2009 06:05 PM I received an unconditional offer from the UoE for their Commercial Law program. For those who are still waiting, the time lapse between conclusion of the application and receipt of the offer was around a month and a half (I applied only in February). I didn't accept it yet since I'm waiting to hear from UCL, KCL and Utrecht. Nevertheless, I was wondering if any of you guys have already started looking out for accomodation and the like in Edinburgh? Anyone who's already there could give us some inside info? Thanks a lot! Diego Wed Apr 15, 2009 05:41 PM With regards to accommodation - let me know what kind of thing you are looking for - budget etc. I've lived in Edinburgh since 2003 and know the city very well. Edinburgh pretty much has everything - it's a small city, but extremely cultured. I could organise a little welcome party in a pub for the first week if any LLM students are interested? Let me know! Edit: I should add for those questioning acceptance that I was accepted very quickly to the LLM, but I have an extensive work history in my particular subject area, so I think that this made my application stronger than most. Hey Everybody! Sat Apr 18, 2009 02:29 AM I have offers to take my LLM in the University of Edinburgh (Commercial Law) and in the University of Nottingham (International Commercial Law). It appears to me that the University of Nottingham is better ranked and that it offers more modules (and even on regarding Trade Finance, which is what I want to learn more about). However, I see that some people say that Edinburgh is still better than the University of Nottingham. Does anyone have anything to say on that? Has anyone taken the LLM of Commercial Law of Edinburgh and know how does it comparte to Nottingham's International Commercial Law LLM? It appears to me that Edinburgh doesn't have a lot of modules available on finance/ trade finance. Furthermore, I have heard that the living cost of Edinburgh is quite higher than in Nottingham. Can anyone confirm that? It appears to me that Edinburgh is a great place to live and that the University has quite a spitir, but I wanted to hear something more concrete about it, the city, living costs and accomodation. Well, thats it.. I know its a looot of questions, but I would appreciate any help with this! Thank you!! Best Regards |

Well....its like either being in England or Scotland...! If you want to be in Scotland...no better place than Edinburgh itself...! and if in England then ( i would choose London) Nottingham is not a bad option at all...!Sat Apr 18, 2009 08:07 AM If this is not the issue...then.... Edinburgh is ranked a little lower to nottingham in the ranking...but that it marginal difference. And keeping in mind that these rankings are strictly for LLB....i don' think a marginal difference would make a difference...I think you should take into consideration (nott the overall ranking) but the RAE ranking (i.e Research...which is the closest indicitor of postgraudate ranking) shows that Nottingham has only 46 points and Edinburgh has 48.74 (UCL has 42.80) (Cambridge has 83.27) Also FTE points given by RAE show the following: (1) Nottingham is 46 points (2) Edinburgh is 49 points About the course studies and modules...I can really not tell you anything...! But i know the faculty members are very down to earth and helping..! Even the student Finance department is very understanding. the best part is the Career Advice Service. |

For instance, in Guardian's 2008 ranking UoE was ranked much higher that UoN (here's the link: browse.guardian.co.uk/education?SearchBySubject=&F…) Secondly, I am not sure if the UoE offers lower number of modules than UoN. At UoE, you are not limited to choose between the courses offered at Commercial Law Programme, but you can also take other courses. On the website of UoE it reads as follows: "LLM in Commercial Law students must take a minimum of 80 credits from the Commercial Law Courses listed below. The remaining 40 credits may be chosen either from this same list of Commercial Law Courses listed below or from the School’s other MSC and LLM courses (listed here: www.law.ed.ac.uk/pg/taught/llmlaw.aspx). Hi! Thank you for your help!!! Your comments were great! Sat Apr 18, 2009 05:15 PM No doubt that Edinburgh is a GREAT institution and that its LLM program is one of the tops! However, it appears to me that Edinburgh LLM is not focus on finance and trade finance. It is much more focused in Commecial Law, Competition Law, Corporate law... its much more focused in the "Company's side". Nothing wrong with that, but I am not sure thats what I have been looking for. But I havent made up my mind yet, since Edinburgh seems such a great city!!!!! I have just heard good things about it!! In the Research list Nottingham appears in 4th, and I think thats verry good. Nottingham seems also like a very good University. Its just a very hard choice. Does anyone know anything about the living costs of Edinburgh? I have heard it is higher than in Nottingham, but I am not sure. |

Yes ...it is very true that the Cost of Living in Edinburgh is much higher than Nottingham city...!! Its obvious becoz its one of best facilitated city. Also, repeating myself...the best city in Scotland....the cost of living is really high...(though not as high as london)....but still it can eat the pockets of many people...!Sat Apr 18, 2009 06:24 PM However, good news....there is something known as EUSA...its the One-Full-Year Discount card available to students...it gives loads and loads and loads...1000 of discounts...right from 30% to 80% on things ranging from Tavelling...eating in resturants....go to Partties...everthing...!! So your entire living cost reduces to half...! And the University Accomodation more worth than the Accomodation in Nottingham....! coming to your choice of Modules...I would say that if finance is really important as a subject to you then you would rather select Nottingham (as there is not much difference)...! But i presume that there are modules on finance also available in UoE...! (however, my suggestion on the module selection can't be relied upon...becoz I have not studied Commercial Law in Edinburgh)..! |

Hey lookingforllm, haven't heard from You lately. Looks like we're still in same situation :). To be honest with You I'm 100% towards UK and 95% towards Nottingham at the moment. I looked at the degree structure and checked how my curriculum could look like in both places and when I compared Nott's seemed more appealing and interesting, diversified and fun. But that depends mostly on what You're interested in. And in my case it's Nott.
