TOEFL 111 not good?
Hello everyone,Wed Nov 19, 2008 12:52 AM I am applying for a few schools this year an the first time I took the toefl, my score was 111. It so happens that my speaking section score was 23... CLS asks for 24 in speaking, HLS 25 in each subsection. Do you think my score will disqualify me? |

yeah me too! I got just 108 for my first try and the speaking part is only 24...Do you think Harvard will turn me down solely because of this? I don't wanna retest though...maybe I should go for Stanford or Columbia instead.

TOEFL 111 not good?
Anyone has any idea on how important is the minimum of 25? I got 26 in the second test, but then I failed to get 25 on writing...

I would not worry too much. In fact not at all. 111 points is an excellent result considering that even fluent persons often don't achieve this score. And: the people on the board of admission know (should know) that it is often just luck which kind of questions you get in the speaking section (this applies to every section btw). 111 P. shows that you will have no problems at all to understand and participate in the lectures. And this is most important!

I think that having a 23 or 24 on the speaking section won't disqualify anyone of you. Reading and writing is most important to the admissions office. So if you have a very good score on those sections I believe that you'll be totally fine.

I was giving further thoughts on the matter, and since the schools accept paper based toefl, which does not have a speaking section, I guess the speaking section must be less relevant to some extent

I think 111 is a very good result. Sun Nov 23, 2008 03:25 AM But if I were the author, I would contact an admission officer and ask whether they would like a better TOEFL score. |

They have two "official positions on the matter"Sun Nov 23, 2008 01:34 PM 1.May I submit a new TOEFL score? Yes. Please arrange for ETS to have your new score report sent to our office. Additionally, if your TOEFL score is less than 250 on the computer-based test, less than 600 on the paper-based test, or less than 100 on the internet-based test, you must retake the TOEFL if you are admitted to the Graduate Program. (For the internet-based test, we also require a minimum score of 25 on each sub-section.) 2. Reply of an e-mail I sent them Your application will still be reviewed even if your TOEFL score does not meet the minimum required by the Harvard Law School Graduate Program. However, you will be at a serious disadvantage compared to other applicants whose TOEFL scores meet our required minimum and who have sent their scores to us by the deadline. Applicants may always retake the TOEFL and have your score sent to us as soon as possible. Kind regards, |
