UCL Admission
Hi everyone: Sat Jan 17, 2009 09:20 PM I received an offer of admission at UCL and was pretty excited about it! Now that I actually need to make a decision within a week or so, I am getting nervous though :)) If you have any input on the following issues, I would love to hear from you! 1) What is UCL's reputation in the UK and Europe? I know it's ranked pretty high, but it's not on par with Cambridge (where I have also applied and from whom I haven't heard back yet). I guess what I'm asking is how much of an asset will an LLM from UCL be in terms of obtaining employment in the UK or Europe? 2) Is it ok to accept the offer at UCL and then, if Cambridge were to admit me, turn down UCL and go to Cambridge after all? Is there a deposit fee? (the admission letter did not indicate that there would be one) 3) If I am unable to secure funding for an LLM degree starting in 2009, how amenable is UCL to defering entry into their program to September 2010? I should add that I am a US licensed attorney with a law degree from a university that would not mean much in Europe (it's a good university, but it's not Harvard or Yale and likely people wouldn't have heard of this university). I would like to work in Europe at least for a while after completing my LLM degree, hence my thinking that a degree from a UK university would help. As far as the professional direction I am heading towards, I should add that I am not interested in corporate law (just to be clear, it's not that I look unfavorably at those interested in corporate law, it's just not for me). I would like to study either Alternative Dispute Resolution or something related more to international societal issues such as immigration, child/ family welfare, or socio-economic development. Thanks in advance for reading and any advice you may have! [Edited by ioana on 18 Jan 2009] |

Hi Ioana and congratulations! Unfortunatelly I can't answer your questions as I don't really have experience in that area but I do have a question for you: ;-)Sat Jan 17, 2009 11:56 PM I applied to an UCL LLM by the end of November and haven't heard from them so far. When did you apply? Did you receive a letter informing that they were processing your application? Thanks in advance! D. |

Sun Jan 18, 2009 01:55 AM Hi Ioana and congratulations! Unfortunatelly I can't answer your questions as I don't really have experience in that area but I do have a question for you: ;-) Thanks for the congrats :) The date of receipt of my application (per UCL records) is November 20, 2008. I believe I sent my application in around early November. I received a letter dated November 24, 2008 (although, due to it being sent through snail mail, I received it probably in December) informing me that my application was being considered and that I should receive a response by mid-January. Hope this helps, and good luck with your application! [Edited by ioana on 18 Jan 2009] |

Hi ioanaMon Jan 19, 2009 02:07 PM Gratulations for your offer. I'm at UCL at the moment and try to come with a few, hopefully helpful answers: 1) There are diff. rankings (see on llmguide). I would say Oxford/Cambridge would be first ranked, LSE second, UCL third. But UCL is definitely a very good LLM to have. 2) When I asked exactly the same last year, it was ok. Your first acceptance is provisional, you can withdraw it. But I suggest to get in contact with UCL Admissions to double check. There was no fee for me. 3) Not sure about this point. Be aware that for practicing law (consult clients) in UK an LLM is not enough, you need to be additionally qualified as a solicitor in most of the cases. As a US qualified attorney you might be able to convert your title (check www.sra.org.uk/ for more infos). |

not sure if necessary but I attached it anyway. I dont think it would hurt at all! that will give them the chance to see more things you have done that u didnt mention on your statement. Such as personal/volunteering experience you may have or any language courses or seminars you took. I think its always a plus!

Anybody hear something from UCL?Mon Feb 02, 2009 04:25 PM I received a letter on December 11, dated October 31, 2008 saying that I would receive a letter with an answer on December 12, which was of course impossible since it took almost a month a half for that letter to arrive. Now its been a month and a half since they said I would receive the letter and still nothing. I called them today but it was impossible to talk to any of the two women who work at the graduate office at the law faculty. I called several times and no answer. I also called admissions but they said the only ones who know about llm admissions are the people in charge at the law faculty. Has anybody try to call them or something? Ill try again during this week because i have a deadline from another uni and I need to know if i got accepted or rejected in order to make a decision. --- |

Actually yes it is. For me it was between Edinburgh and UCL because i liked them more and i considered them more prestigious than Queen Mary, but thats just my humble opinion. Im pretty excited yes!Thu Feb 05, 2009 10:40 PM --- |

heySat Feb 07, 2009 11:11 AM i had applied to KCL nd UCL for LLM in International Commercial Law in mid-Oct, 2008 & got conditional offers from the colleges in mid-Nov and Dec end, respectively. I am in the final year of my bachelor's degree and do not know which of the two colleges i shud go for. I havent got a clear idea from ny1 till now. I need an overall aggregate of 60% for KCL & 65% for UCL to get the final offer. my aggregate is more than 65%. After completing my LLM, i wanna come back 2 india & start working. can any1 advise me regarding the college i shud opt among the two? M even interested in knowing which of the two offers better internship programme and a better placement back in india. people who are presently studying in any of these colleges, esp. the ones who are pursuing their LLM in the subject i hav opted are requested to give me an idea. alumnis please respond! |
