Jitender Joined: 22 May 2005 Posts: 2	help!!! Tue May 24, 2005 05:41 PM Hi everybody, i'm a final year law student in India (graduating in April, 2006), and am planning for an LLM next year. I have a few doubts hope soemone can help me with them. I'm interested in International taxation and maritime law. Is it better to do a general LLM say international law or commercial laws. Or is it more advisable to go for a specific courses such as International taxation or Taxation or Maritime Law? I intend to get back to my country and practice.

If your thinking in terms of more choice in the courses you can select-most universities offer some flexibilty in courses. Since you want to return to your country afterwards, a specialised LLM will definately increase ur marketablilty. You have a few months before u start applying, maybe u can research and decide, which way would be most beneficial to you I hope that helps in some way Cheers!

I guess i'll have to make a choice. could you guide me on the best university to apply in the US for the International Taxation and Maritime Law? Do you generally need work ex.?

Fri May 27, 2005 02:04 PM You could go to a program that has a strong presence in both tax and maritime law, if one exists. for tax: the best is NYU, followed by FLORIDA and WASHIINGTON. for maritime: the only school I know which is renouned for this is Tulane. Keep in mind many schools offer a specialty but not that many classes a semester in that specialty. I am an antitrust LLM and went part time because of this -- NYU does not offer a full load each semester in antitrust. I am paying $40,000 so decided to go part time. THUS, you really need to look into what classes schools actually offer, rather than what is in their general catalogue.

For Tax, NYU is ranked #1 by US News, but Florida is also oustanding. Washington isn't even considered in the top 5 - NYU, Florida, Georgetown, Northwestern, and Miami. Tue Jun 27, 2006 06:21 PM i used to practise maritime law in a common law country. in my opinion, if you intent to practise maritime law back in india, an LLM from a UK law school could be a better option. it's less costy, less competitive in terms of admission and better recognized in the shipping industry. among the best picks are Southampton, Cardiff and UCL. good luck!

You might think about addressing this question to an LLM program at a school that offers both kinds of programs. More specifically, find a law prof/scholar who has published in this area, read her/his work, and address an email to that person. You may end up with a foot in the door and just the information you need. Most deans of such programs are generally very approachable and welcome telephone or email inquiries from serious students. With respect to possible UK universities, Cardiff has withdrawn its Maritime Law LLM (although some maritime subjects continue to be offered within its commercial law programme). The University of Nottingham (my own) offers an LLM in Maritime Law as well as one in International Commercial Law. A number of other universities also teach maritime law, either as a nominate LLM or as part of a commercial law degree.
