KCL or University of Glasgow
Hi,Sun Feb 15, 2009 02:27 PM I was wondering which of the above mentioned universities offers the better LLM programme with regard to international competition law -- also taking into account factors such as practitioner involvement, internships with law firms and career support. Glasgow has Prof. Mark Furse and offers the LLM called International Competition Law & Policy. Students can choose subjects like International Competition Law & Policy I & II, and International Merger Control. KCL has Prof. Richard Whish and Alison Jones. The Competition Law LLM is more general, but I guess if you choose the subjects like EC State Aid & State Regulation Law, EC Competition Law, UK Competition Law, and US Antitrust Law the programme becomes more comparable with the LLM offered by Glasgow. Without a doubt both programmes/institutions are quite renowned, and Glasgow has mucher lower tuition fees, but I really would like to know which programme is the better one. I would be greatful for any advice! |

From the way you write it sounds like you're leaning towards Glasgow. Do you have offers from both?

are you really comparing KCL to Glasgow?? KCL is ranked 4 in London for Law. Sun Feb 15, 2009 03:26 PM Additionally, it is one of THE best in competiton law. If you really secured an offer from KCL, go for it (unless you have offers from better universities like Oxbridge) [Edited by nok on 15 Feb 2009] |

Id say Glasgow....though im a tad biasTue Mar 17, 2009 09:12 PM Though I do know that Harvard, Oxford both have high intakes of Glasgow grads - mainly cuz of the academics and the fact that its nearly 600 years old - so I think academically Glasgow is better - I turned down KCL for a Glasgow LL.B. KCL is super new - so i guess it also depends on what kind of uni you prefer....I always go for 'ancient universities'. PM me if you have any other questions |

Also....I was taught by Mark Furse in second year, and now being taught by Sandra M Collino and Rosa Greaves - taking European Rules on Competition, and doing my dissertation on Antitrust law - Id say for competition Glasgow is probably better too.....Tue Mar 17, 2009 09:14 PM |

Tue Mar 17, 2009 09:22 PM I would not rate Uni of Glasgow in anywhere close to KCL. I totally agree with you..... One cannot compare the two. Besides, the reputation of Oxbridge, LSE, Kings and UCL for LLM is very good and I really think that Glasglow is no where near it. Sorry! for being honest and curt... |

Wed Mar 18, 2009 02:03 PM I would not rate Uni of Glasgow in anywhere close to KCL. I have to agree. It is well known that KCL is the top place to study competition law and, although I accept Glasgow is a decent law school, it holds nothing to KCL. |

I don't dunno exacly what to do...? I am completely confused.Mon Mar 30, 2009 06:18 PM I have applied to all Universities for Commercial / Corporate Law Programmes: I have recieved an unconditional offer from (i) Glasgow University (ii) City University (iii) Nottingham Trent University (iv) Kent University But City is asking me to pay a non-refundable deposit of £750 for registration within the next 3 weeks. And UCL, QMUL, KCL have not yet replied I have Conditional offers from Manchester, Nottingham, Birmingham (But there is very little hope to fulfill the condition)...! What should i do? If you recommend me to accept an unconditional offer. Which unconditional offer should i accept? City, Glasgow, Kent, NTU ? Will any the these Universities any problems with the VISA process. P.S. I wish to work in law firm immediately after graduating in UK. And it will be great i can get chance to work while i am studying (I am on personal funding). Your early response will be very helpful. Also i have heard that these rankings are mainly LLB rankings and not for LLM programmes. Is it true? |

Mon Mar 30, 2009 10:01 PM Id say Glasgow....though im a tad bias Yep, definitely a tad bias! but more worryingly, factually incorrect. "KCL is super new" smacks of silly snobbery. First, KCL is relatively old compared to other UK universities, and secondly, attempting to assert that Glasgow as better than KCL based on its 'ancient' status is ridiculous. Using that logic, you could assert Glasgow is better than LSE, UCL, and that would also be incorrect. While Glasgow is 'ancient', it certainly doesn't fall in the same category as Oxbridge or UCL, LSE, KCL or QMUL when it comes to LLMs. Ask any law academic worth their salt, and they'll tell you Oxbridge or the UoL is the best place for an LLM. Glasgow law school is good, but let's not pretend it's better than it actually is. It falls within the same category/quality as the likes of Aberdeen, Newcastle, Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Warwick etc. That is, a good solid Russell Group university, but without a hard-hitting LLM programme. KCL is any day better than Glasgow University..!! even if you consider rankings then KCL is better than Glasgow...and even if you consider personal experience of students then you will find the reviews of KCL much more satisfying..!
