I just got a conditional offer from Durham. But I need to re-take an IELTS exam since my offer issued that I have to attend an English pre-sessional course for 12 weeks !!! (I got IELTS 6 but 5.5 in writing) . Personally,it's really expensive and too long . Actually, my friend is now Durham's student told me that last year she got an IELTS band scores likes me and she attended only 8 weeks for English pre-sessional course.

Hey Guys,

Got a conditional offer too and have chosen and been accepted into Hatfield :) Really looking forward to it! Clairesh, are you thinking of staying in Palatine house?

Also got an offer from Edinburgh and a bit confused on which one to accept... any ideas?? I love both campuses (although Ed. is a more beautiful and diverse city...) but then Durham has the collegiate system and is arguably preferred by UK employers... So torn between the two!!

Hi, llegrand

It's really a no easy choice... Personally I prefer big cities if the cost is affordable. I also got an offer from UCL, but have to go to Durham considering the tuition and high living expenses in London... Anyway, Durham is also attractive to me.

I am still hesitating whether to live on campus or not. It is said the rent is much cheaper to live outside. And I guess I will probably find a room outside. Will you staying in Palatine?

Hey Clairesh,

I'm not sure yet, I talked everything over with my parents last night and I think I'm going to Durham after all since the modules there are more directed towards the commercial side of European law than Edinburgh's more academic approach.

I visited Palatine house before coming home for Easter- I'm at uni in Newcastle so I thought It was probably wise to just pop over and have a tour. I'm not sure if you've been to visit? The college itself is great and gorgeous.. Palatine house isn't the prettiest thing around (not terribly ugly either..) but its just a one story house with several corridors.. I spoke to some students who were there and they seem to love it. The rooms aren't that big either (there are some big ones in the corners of each corridor but I think undergraduate Hatfield students continuing their postgraduate studies at Durham get first choice on them)

I would rather stay in a nice flat too with en-suite and everything else, but I'm very tempted to stay in Palatine because its just a year and I think we'll probably meet more people if we're living in. So, I think I'll probably end up staying there... not 100% sure though.

Good luck finding a nice place though :) xxx

Hi llegrand

Great you have finally decided to go to Durham! Looking forward to seeing you this Autumn.
No, I have never visited Durham, but I have watched some video clips and photos from college website. Palatine is not that impressive compared with other school buildings... but my main concern is still the living cost (guess will have to work until late Sep for that...) I figure it is still the best for one -year to live on campus if money is not a problem. After all, Durham is a collegiate university, and I don't think to live outside is the best way to enjoy it.

Is it possible to balance with my erasmus program at Sheffield for 6 months, summer courses at LSE,KCL,SOAS, internship for 4 months in Delhi, and one month itnernship in Singapore? Thanks a lot. Durham it has been always my top preference however I think is gonna be difficult to get admission bc of my grades...Let me know your sicnere thoughts. Thanks a lot.

Hey!

I have just received an email from Durham that my offer has been dispatced and same will be arrived next week. I am expecting it a conditional offer as i scored 6.0 Band in Ielts Test with 5.5 in writing. Now i am worried whether they would suggest me for 8 weeks or 12 weeks Program? I am interested in Pre-sessional for improving Language Skills but Not Too Long as it will take me out of Budget. Any Idea how to convince the Administration ?

Count me in at 50% ! I have not yet received the formal offer, but the email saying my application would be recommended.

I have applied for the European Trade and Commercial law LLM & Hatfield College. I am quite looking forward to experiment the collegiate system, but I am wondering if it's in the same league as UCL or QMUL. Durham is quite highly regarded for their undergraduate program, but what about their LLM, and especially its career prospects?

Hi gentlemen.

Well let s see If finally I get admission. I am waiting my IELTS results.. I was not brave, so I do not think that I will get the 7. People who do not achieve 7, must attend a crazy 12 weeks enlgish course??? That s quite a lot, 3 months in Durham just taking English lectures.

With regard to the question of Queen Mary or Durham,I am bound to say the following: Queen Mary is an excellent university located in London. I can only talk about the LLM Corporate/Commercial Law at QM, which is brilliant. Moreover, QM has its own Center for Commercial studies, which is an active force behind the LLM. Moreover you are in -with Frankfurt- the financial capital of Europe. so it is an excellent choice.

Hi All

I am heading to Durham this year. College of St. Hild & St. Bede. ..Can anyone suggest which would be a better option..living on campus or out...

If I stay on campus, do I need to book a room/seat for College accommodation ahead of my admission in the university? If yes, then what's the procedure?

I do not have an alternative place to stay at Durham. If, however, it gets impossible to accommodate my stay within college set up, can you guide me with getting an accommodation outside college?

All the lawyers that I am working with in Singapore told me that Durham is a GREAT university, one of the best in UK. Is considered as an alternative to Oxford and Cambridge, so we should consider all of us proud of being part of Durham.

Hi erasoft
are you saying you prefer QMUL to UCL? Can I know why is that?
thanks

Curious, isn't it ? :) The reflection is quite simple : QMUL offers a programme a LLM in informations technologies, computer and communications law, while UCL does not. End of the reflection.

In fact, QMUL is, with LSE, one of the very few universities in England with such a specialisation, the other notable one being Edinburgh. All the leaders in the field of internet and IT are in QMUL, for what I've seen.

I do believe that if the programme is not suitable for you and your desires, it just won't make it, whatever the rank of the university.

Just giving some news after weeks of silence.

Unfortunately, I had a rather bad surprise when I had my result, with only a 2:2 class for my degree. :/ Quite a pain when I know that I have been made an offer by Durham and QMUL, my first choice.

But I won't cry, because next year, I will be doing a "Master 2" in IT Law in Paris, and afterwards pass the Paris Bar. The road changes, but not the goal !

Good luck for everyone ; I wish you the best at Durham and for your legal career !

Dear comrades. I have been reading that some of you are thinking of going to private accommodation instead of College. With the due respect I do not think that is a good idea. Durham is driven by the Collegiate System. Living outside the College, it does not really make sense. It would make sense in another city, but not in a city like Durham. Bear in mind that all the Colleges have its own associations, formal dinners, clubs, sports, etc…you may loos all these privileges that a College gives to one. Living in a private accomodation, you will be living, somehow isolated of all the University activities. It is just an opinion but I wanted to share my thoughts with all of you guys,

Hey I agree with you that its a collegiate system, but staying outside wouldnt bar us from the all the activities that you have said............i think : I .. any way I can always chill out at your room when in college right? ;-) and I have already rented a place in durham it costs me 360 GBP all bills included and also has a tv and tv licence and is 10 mins walk from the law school. Do you know if the college will come to pick us on the airport at london?

Crash, of course you can chill out in my College!
On a different note, I do not think that they do have a service to pick students. These kind of services are usually offered to under-age students. Anyway, kindly you could ask to the law school. Moreover, I would recomend you to flight to Newscastle, which is just 15 minutes far from Durham. Crash did you my email yesterday?

Hi Banking, Cambridge? wow that s nice mate. By the way, I should be most grateful whether you could please aquaint me some information about living at Durham. I am happy for going to a uni with outstanding reputation, however I was a bit unsure about the city, since it looks a bit boring, is that right? How did you spend your time there? Activities? Nightlife? Thanks a lot.
On a separate note, since you are from UK, I d like to ask you something, particularly my chances to get a job in UK after the LLM, I mean how difficult is for a foreigner to get a job. I ll let you know briefly my background. I hold the LLB from the uni of Barcelona, an exchange program at Sheffield University, several summer courses at LSE,KCL,SOAS and Westminster, one itnernship in India for 4 months in a top international indian law firm, one month itnernship in a British law firm in Singapore, and 3 months (currently) working in a mid-size spanish law firm, and in september 2010 the LLM.
Banking: Who's going to Durham Law School this year?

Hi, I cannot help you on going out questions since it has been 14 years since I graduated, and I have not done much parting since. I work in the City so when I get a minute I just try to catch on sleep.
I did not live in Durham, I just went there once to give a recruitment speech for and on behalf of my bank, I have also interviewed Durham graduates when they came to London. But you should not be concerned with entertainment. Why? Because
You would not have time and that's why you should live in college-this is the only time you are gonna get.
Let me explain. Durham has one positive and one negative issue. Positive: as I mentioned many times over on this board Durhm (and Bristol) has a very specific reputation in the eyes
of the City employers-a school of Oxbridge rejects. Basically they think, rightly or wrongly and do not ask "why"-I do not know "why"-is that whoever has just
Missed on Oxbridge will go to Durham. Not LSE, KCL, UCL and QM but Durham
Hence, when they need to expand the pool of graduates they hire from they take people
From Durham. And you should milk this "Oxbridge rejects" reputation for what it
Worth. Now negative: it is the distance from London. the recruitent process in the UK works in rounds. Basically
You submit your application, the firm will invite you for the first round itserviews with 2 mid rtanking employees. This can sometime
Be done in Durham where you will meet someone like myself. If you pass, you will be asked to attend an assessment centre where you will be given a multiple choice or a written exam
In math, English, logical reasoning and a Briggs-Myers test or similar. If you pass, you will be asked to do a case study and a presentation. If you pass, you will be asked to attend an interview with managers and partners. If you pass, they will give
You the job. In order for you to get an offer you will need to apply to about 30 firms to be on the safe side. 30x3 rounds at least - 90 rounds, out of which 90-30, 60 rounds will take place
Outside of Durham, mainly in London. This means that you will have to commute and stay overnight in London on 60 occasions plus still do your study.
Trust e, you will not have time for fun. Hence, the ones who believe that they will benefit from at least some social life staying outside of college are wrong.
As for your background, where are you from exactly? And if your heritage/background is from a different nation, please let e know_then I'll tell you exactly
However, if you are not an EU citizen, it will be VERY difficult nevermind what your background is.
Make sure that you get a correct visa-there are 2 types of student visas. Ordinary ones, after which
You have to get a work permit, and the ones which will give you a residency right for 1-2 years after graduation
And an opportunity to look for work without a permit. If you get the second one, you are with the chance. If the first one-no chance.
In the first case, employers have to advertise in the national newspaper, interview every single
EU applicant who applies for this position and then explain to the Home Office why they should take you, not them, which will be difficult to do as you still have limited
Experience. Otherwise, assuming that you are early 20s, your experienxe is OK

Very many thanks for your detailed email. When I asked for nightlife, I did not mean that I just want to party, by no means! Just wanted to know the activities offered by Durham, such theathre, cinema, restaurants, museums, and also nightlife.
I aim to suit the QLTT (qualified lawyers transfer test, I am from Barcelona, SPAIN) test while taking the LLM, thus I will be considered as a solicitor.
My brother works in the City also, White&Case, however, recently has been post to Calyon bank. Even having a brother working at the City, I wanted to rely on some information from a British, and I should thanks again for you splendid email.
I understand that Durham University organizes events with law firms, is that true?
Thank very much,

This is true but only for the first round unless something has changed in recent years. I know White @ Case well though I have only worked with them on Russian real estate deals. Worked with Maya Melnikas and Elena Antonova, if your brother knows them. The patner there is Eric Mikhailov though I did not have much dealings with him directly. As I do not know many Spanish lawyers would be great to meet up once you are in the UK. Give me a shouit some time in October via message on this board.
I was hoping for a deal in Barcelona last year (and more DD in the sun but the bank pulled out for obvious reasons). So no Barcelona for me and it is obe of my top 3 cities!
Calyon is a good bank for corporate, not M@A transactions, such as refinancing, securitisation, commodities work etc. I am sure your brother will be happy there and hopefully he speaks French

Hi Sandeep,
Basic rule: Don't go to a place you can't spell. Manchester has an edge here.

Hi Colorado

I am from Istanbul, Turkey. My college is Ustinov but I am not staying at college accommodation. I live in Newcastle, it is just 10 minutes away from Durham by train. However I would love to join all college events, especially welcome events :) I will be in Durham on 30 September. Hope to see you all there!
