Hey there! I was wondering if any of you guys knows more about the Cornell University. Is it actually in New York City? After all I think I will go to one of the bigger ÚS cities so NYC would of course be nice.

Hi Jorge! Cornell is actually not really in New York City but in a small town. With all the universities in the New York section you can distinguish easily: The ones that are actually in NYC have the address "New York, NY + no.".

Cornell is in the Finger Lakes regions in upstate New York, specifically in the Greek-named town of Ithaca, NY, in (5 to 6 hours by car from NYC). The education is excellent - it's also Ivy league if that matters to you, but you're definitely not in a big city.

Columbia and Cornell are both Ivy league. NYU is not. I only offer this info if it matters (and to future employers it does-prestige- take a look a webpage from any blue chip US firm.) Attending any of the three, will provide you with an excellent background of US law, and, what I think is equally important, connections with students who will become your friends and future colleagues. I am not sure if you want to work a year in the US after completion, but I would in order to apply what you have learned. LLM spots are very competitive - in some cases you're being billed out at (US)$250 an hour- so we search for the most able attorneys. In addition to being competent attorneys in their respective jurisdictions, the LLM students working in my firm (for a year only -from Mexico, China, France) got their jobs based, at least it appears, to a great degree based on their pedigree and alumni from their school at the firm. I hope these ramblings help as US LLM are (too) expensive and I hate to see fellow lawyers not get what they want.

Hi Deranwalt, Thank you your long and informative answer. i definitely agree that the prices are to high for US LLMs but actually they are not so much lower in the UK for example at least if you are not from EU. Therefore, I thing it will better for me to do the 'real' thing in the US, I heard they have all these job ´fares and so on. I guess I will try also NYU, because Columbia does not take so many students i hear as NYU?Anyway, I ll try. Where are you planning your LLm by the way?

Sorry for the delayed response. Work has been busy. I have a US law degree and 7 years of US training so I am only looking to study in continental Europe (Germany or Belgium.) I practice US antitrust and M&A law (competition law) so I want to study in a non-English speaking environment to also benefit from the foreign language surroundings.

I chose the German name because I have to be careful. If I don't get into any school, I don't want job difficulties later. I am presently employed, and I know that some of the foreign attorneys in my firm may be using this site (i.e., reading the posts) and could accidently discuss it with my less than understanding bosses or to other aggressive colleagues who may use it to get ahead. (Oh life in a big firm....)

I have mostly German, French, and Swiss clients so Germany would be great for continued work with the first two. (I intend to work in Europe and keep my clients...discussions currently pending with an American firm/sweatshop for an intitial landing pad) Keeping in mind that I want to work while I study, I am looking closely at the University in Munich for the European LLM. I have been told that the legal market is not as bad there as in the rest of Germany. As for Belgium, I chose schools in Brussels because that is where I generally work when I come to Europe.

Hey Jorge,

I just came accross your message. Cornell is located in a very remote town, 6 hours from NYC. It makes it a really enjoyable studying place, while being not too far from either Montréal or NYC by car...

Hi Miki,

JD: Cornell uses ABCDEF to grade students; however, some students can opt to use pass/fail (S/U) for some very limited courses. It is up to professors.
LLM: Cornell uses H/S/U (Honor/Satisfaction/Unsatisfaction) for LLM students. For courses with option to S/U, LLM students can choose to use that grading system too. However, Cornell doesn't use ABCDEF to grade LLM students.

I wonder whether all top law schools in the U.S. use this grading (H/S/U) for their LLM programs. But I think HLS uses ABCDEF. any idea?

Not every school uses the H/S/U grading system. I am not sure which grading system most top law schools use.
According to a friend from Columbia, they still use ABCDEF. I also heard that Yale uses S/U (pass/fail) system only; but I am not positive about this information, it is just a hearsay.

Hi, i just got admitted to the Cornell LLM. I would like to know if there are scholarships that are available in Cornell. Several acquiantances of mine have told me to just go to the USA and there would be lots of scholarships there. Im a little short on the funding, i can however get loans from my relatives, but im banking on getting scholarships when i get there. Is there really a possibility of me getting a scholarship at Cornell, not necessarily directly from Cornell, but from associated/affiliated organizations over there?

Hi vlad (and maybe future colleague as I was admitted too) I wouldn’t count on any further scholarships after your arrival, but I’m not American so maybe I’m wrong (still I would be very surprised!).

Unsure as to what you mean by the "real thing" in the US as opposed to the UK ?????
It may be advisable to check the foundations of English Law
and the origination of Harvard itself

Could smb please tell me what is the deadline for accepting the offer, and if smb applied for financial aid from Cornell, have you got it? And one more question: Cornell v Michigan - which one would you choose?
