LLM in Germany

Hi! It's nice I found this board.
I'm going to take LLM course in Germany and have some offers, one of them is from University of Bremen "LLM fuer Auslaender ".
Does anyone have an idea about this programm? From the web-site it looks interesting, but I'm afraid to make a wrong choice.

languge of instruction is German, but there are some courses in Engish as well.

I think it's better to study in German when you are in Germany.

I am wondering what is the level of knowledge of German which is required to study in Germany? Is the course itself taught in German - if yes, I believe, native speakers will be benefited most. Anyone has any idea about the level expected?

I was also wondering whether there are any not-to-be-missed courses in Germany - any recommended universities?

LLM for Ausländer ist only for foreign students ("Ausländer"), so you will not compete with German students directly. Hoewever, most LLM classes in Germany are part of the regular course program, so the (language) level may be quite hight. You should contact the University about the language requirements and which courses they recommend for LLM students.

Most German universities are pretty good, but there are no "elite" university (they are trying to change this with extra state money at the moment). This means you can have good classes anywhere. Some universities like Munich, Tübingen or Heidelberg may be more known internationally, but it all depends on the subjects and professors.

I think it is important to ask the law department how many people participate in the LLM program. As LLM programs in Germany are not so traditional as in the US/UK It is important to make sure that you have many nice collegues from other countries to discuss about the courses, the city and so on.

There are also some "American type" LLM programs which are taught in English by German and international professors and practitioners, e.g. MIPLC Munich (IP law) and ILF Frankfurt (Finance Law). These programs are more expensive than the other LLM programs, but the money may be worth it as you will get "extra value" in terms of supervision and teaching.

Dear Nikolas,

Could you tell me if it is possible to do an "American" type LLM in Criminal Law in Germany? Would I atleast be permitted to write my thesis in English?
Does the choice of language of an LLM thesis depend on the supervising Prof. or the University?

The LLM program "Transnational Criminal Justice and Crime Prevention" offered by Humboldt University could be an option:

However, it's not delivered in Germany, but at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa.

I think FU Berlin (http://www.jura.fu-berlin.de/studium/vorschriften/llm/dokumente/Flyer2010.pdf) and most other German universities will allow you to write your thesis in German, if you find a professor who accepts doing that.
