Master Degree in Law of Human rights

Hi,

I'm finishing up my J.D. from a US university in June. Currently, I am participating in an internship in Geneva in an international non-profit. I would love to stay and work in Geneva in the field of international law and am wondering if anyone has any suggestions about whether it is preferable to attend say the University of Geneva and get a Master in Advanced Studies degree (I am interested in the intersection of human rights and environmental conservation.) or to just jump in and move here when I'm done with school and look for a job directly out of university? Thank you for any advice you can provide.

I would check the programme at the University of Aberdeen as well:
They teach various human rights systems but also exploring global human rights issues as well as the responses thereto afforded at an international, regional or domestic level. They have courses on offer such as International Human Rights Law, Regional Human Rights Systems, Human Rights, War and Terrorism, Peoples, Indigenous Peoples and Minorities in International Law, Issues in North American Human Rights Law, Legal Issues in Equal Treatment and Free Movement in EC Law.
(see www.abdn.ac.uk/law/graduate/index.shtml)
All the best

Hi, I'm a currently studying Social Anthropology and Public Law. I will finish up receiving a bachelor in both subjects. I would like to continue studying International Law with specialization on Human Rights in a Master's programme. But I don't know if my degree (just in public law) is enough for admission. Does anybody know of a good reputated university programme for Human Rights/International Law that doesn't ask for a bachelor in law?

I am planning to apply at the University of Lund (Masters Programme in Intellectual Property Law and Human Rights Law), although I found out from its website that they only accept around 15 students for the program. Does anybody know anyone who has qualified and taken the program? What qualifications are necessary to ensure acceptance? Thanks..

hi,
im a sri Lankan who just completed my LLB in july 2005. i am currently working at the UNDP in sri lanka. I am iterested in doing a masters programme in international human rights, International criminal law and humanitarian law.... I checked out the UCHL programme and having heard that it is not an LLM per se, lost my enthusiasm to apply there....
Could someone help me out with some suggestions for good universities for those subjects...? i am also hoping to apply for financial aid so if anyone has an idea of any particular scholarships awarded by the universities please let me know... I have also checked out the University of London external LLM. The programme did not offer the exact subjects i am keen on. Are there any other good universities in Geneva that offer LLM programmes in the subjects that i mentioned... ?

Hi,

I've also applied for the master in human rights and intellectual property rights in Lund. I'm really looking forward for the results and hoping to get accepted. I would appreciate ANY information about the program, the university or the city. It seems the last message had the most interesting part censored. If someone want to discuss it via email, mine is ulyssesmf@hotmail.com

A hug,
Ulysses.

Hi,

I finished my LL.M studies at Lund university in 2005. I can tell you that it is a very charming medieval city, small but with a tremendous supply for international students. With Malmö and Copenhagen within close proximity (20 and 50 minutes by train) it's an ideal place to study. The ordinary LL.M program (for Swedish students) is the hardest and most prestigous in Sweden.

Hi! I also applied to LLM in Human Rights and Intellectual Property Rights in Lund. Problem is that the results will be only in June. It's a bit too long to wait and i'm not sure they will choose me, they accept just 15 students. I already received answers from UK universities and Leiden University in the Netherlands. I'm not sure if it's wise to wait.what do you think?
The programme in Lund seems to be very good and known around the world. I've been to Lund last year, it's really nice cosy city. I

I don't know why only the message i was trying to answer appeared on the site. Well, I was trying to say that if I was chosen to a LLM program besides Lund that I could afford, I wouldn't wait for Lund's results, since it's very selective (just 15 people). However, Lund's programme seems just wonderful to me. I really hope to be accepted.

Hi! The Lund Master's degree in International Human Rights Law sounds fantastic, and I'd love to apply for it (as well as the scholarship, which I'm going to need!). I will be finishing my LLB in December this year - does anyone know whether there's much chance of getting into Lund without work experience?

Hi everybody!

Good to talk to people interested in the same things I am...

I applied to the Master in International Human Rights Law Program at Lund University and I didn't receiveid an answer... I would like to know if somebody has any information from the University... In the web site, they said they'll make contact by mail only in June or July, but if someone already have any information, I would appreciate to have any news...

Thanks in advance!

Hi Carol,
I applied to Lund too and still haven't heard from them. I know 2 people that did the HRs LLM at Lund last year, 1 of them recieved a letter at the end of April and the other in the middle of May. Don't start worrying yet. Remember that they will have had some time off for Easter.
It is on the otherhand a good idea to have a backup university as Lund is very competative.
Good luck!!!

Hi Steph, I also applied to do the HR LLM at Lund. I was wondering, did the 2 people you know who did it get scholarships? I know it is really competetive - what kind of grades and experience do you need in order to get in? I appreciate any information you have - I don't want to get my hopes up too much!

Hi Patricia,
I actually don't know if they had scholarships, they are both from Central Europe so they would apply to a different fund than me (so it never came up).
1 of them finished top of his class and had won several awards although he had little experience as far as I know- on the other hand he read an LLM in European Law at Lund in the year before applying. The other girl had worked as a lawyer for a few years before applying although she had little experience with Human Rights.
I think it is very hard to guess what Lund want, although good grades and work experience can't hurt. Apparently they like people with language skills. The only thing you can do is wait unfortunately.
Sorry I can't be more help.
Let me know when you hear- I want to know when it is time to give up hope!!!!

Steph

The LLM in International Human Rights. They requested a reply in 14days or I would lose my place. I guess then they start to give the places to people on the waiting list.
Hope that helped

Thanks, Steph. I applied for HRs and Intellectual property rights.
Have you applied to any other unis or just Lund?
Maybe Lund hasn't started to send offers to the programme in Hrs and IP yet. Has anybody else received an offer from Lund?

Hi Lea,
I applied to Utrecht, Groningen and Warwick (I got places at Utrecht and Groningen and haven't heard off Warwick yet). I have already accepted my place at Lund as it was my 1st choice.
No idea about other offer from Lund. It is very possible that they haven't started with offers for the HRs and IP LLM but I have no idea to be honest.
I hope you hear soon,
Steph

Hi, has anybody graduated, or know someone that has, from the HR master run by Utrecht? Feeback of the Uni and the course would be most appreciated. What/where do you gyes want to work once graduated? I'm a bit confused as to where in the field I wish to work!
