There are some good programs in the Netherlands such as Leiden University (LL.M. Public International Law), Utrecht University, University of Groningen, Maastricht University. University of Lund (Sweden), University of Oslo and University of Malta also offer a Human Rights LL.M. I am not sure if the one in Malta is actually an LL.M. It is called "Mediterranean Master of Arts in Human Rights and Democratization" and looks really intersting for lawyers planning to practice Human Rights Law in the Mediterranean area.

Hi,

You should check out the program at Lunds University, Sweden – The Raoul Wallenberg institute http://www.rwi.lu.se/index.shtml . One of the advantages of taking a LLM in Sweden is that you don’t have to pay any tuition – education is funded by the government.

Hey,
I got accepted into the Utrecht LLM international and european protection of human rights. This is great, but brutally expensive (9000) for a dutch program. I cannot aply for any scholarship sincde I am actaully a dutch student, and then you just cant apply. Anyway. How well appreciated is the degree of this masters, how did other students get the money together, and does anyone know stories of people that did the degree, concerning the level and career perspectives afterwards?
Cheers,

I would in anyway prefer to apply for the MA in human rights and conflict studies in Utrecht, except for it's MA and not a LL.M. Thats a choice I guess! The MA is a regular programme.

The University of Groningen is starting a LL.M in international Human Rights this year I guess, but if you want to be sure send an email to the faculty. Groningen had been awarded the best Law faculty of the Netherlands, if that means anything.

Does anyone know anything about the programme at Oslo's university?

Russ: Oxford Human Rights

It's actually not an LLM but a Master of Studies (MSt), see http://www.llm-guide.com/university/118 or http://www.conted.ox.ac.uk/courses/international/mastersdegreeininternationalhumanrightslaw.asp

"Q: What is a Master of Studies degree and how does it differ from an LLM?

A: In Oxford the primary one-year post-graduate degree in the humanities and social sciences, including law, is the Masters of Studies (MSt). The University of Oxford offers no LLM degree in any field of law. This course is an MSt because it is taken part-time over two years and thus is equivalent to one year of full-time study. Oxford offers a Master of Studies (MSt) rather than an LLM degree for historical reasons unrelated to the content or sophistication of the course of study. Is the MSt equivalent to an LLM? Yes. In both cases students normally are expected to have a first degree in Law. In both cases the level of instruction and subject offerings are similar."

Ulyssesmf: Doubts about Lund

Hi,
I've applied for Lund's LLM in human rights and intellectual property rights this year and I was nominatted for a scholarship. However, I was not awarded and I didn't have enough money to support myself for a year in Sweden (I'm form Brazil - not an european citizen), I had to let it go. I had no idea of aforum like this. Can anyone tell me how is it to live in Lund? Is it an expensive town? Are there job opportunities?

Does any one knows about other universities who have LLMprograms in the human rights field which are free like Lund's?

bm4844: Master Degree in Law of Human rights

The programme at the University of Geneva isn't in human rights law per se, nor is it an LL.M. programme exactly. First, it offers a degree in humanitarian law (the law of armed conflict), not human rights law. Secondly, it no longer offers an LL.M., but a 'Master in Advanced Studies', which is regarded as the equivelant of an LL.M.

As far as its reputation: for those interested in humanitarian law in particular, it provides excellent instruction and career opportunities. Because of its proximity to the ICRC (also located in Geneva), many of the world's foremost scholars in this field research there. It is also affiliated offically with the ICRC, which provides students with opportunities not available at locations more distant from Geneva.

I'm finishing up my J.D. from a US university in June. Currently, I am participating in an internship in Geneva in an international non-profit. I would love to stay and work in Geneva in the field of international law and am wondering if anyone has any suggestions about whether it is preferable to attend say the University of Geneva and get a Master in Advanced Studies degree (I am interested in the intersection of human rights and environmental conservation.) or to just jump in and move here when I'm done with school and look for a job directly out of university? Thank you for any advice you can provide.

They teach various human rights systems but also exploring global human rights issues as well as the responses thereto afforded at an international, regional or domestic level. They have courses on offer such as International Human Rights Law, Regional Human Rights Systems, Human Rights, War and Terrorism, Peoples, Indigenous Peoples and Minorities in International Law, Issues in North American Human Rights Law, Legal Issues in Equal Treatment and Free Movement in EC Law.

I checked out the UCHL programme and having heard that it is not an LLM per se, lost my enthusiasm to apply there....
Could someone help me out with some suggestions for good universities for those subjects...? i am also hoping to apply for financial aid so if anyone has an idea of any particular scholarships awarded by the universities please let me know... I have also checked out the University of London external LLM. The programme did not offer the exact subjects i am keen on. Are there any other good universities in Geneva that offer LLM programmes in the subjects that i mentioned... ?

Hi,

I finished my LL.M studies at Lund university in 2005. I can tell you that it is a very charming medieval city, small but with a tremendous supply for international students. With Malmö and Copenhagen within close proximity (20 and 50 minutes by train) it's an ideal place to study. The ordinary LL.M program (for Swedish students) is the hardest and most prestigous in Sweden.

It is on the otherhand a good idea to have a backup university as Lund is very competative.
Good luck!!!

Hi Carol,
I applied to Lund too and still haven't heard from them. I know 2 people that did the HRs LLM at Lund last year, 1 of them recieved a letter at the end of April and the other in the middle of May.

Hi Steph, I also applied to do the HR LLM at Lund. I was wondering, did the 2 people you know who did it get scholarships? I know it is really competetive - what kind of grades and experience do you need in order to get in? I appreciate any information you have - I don't want to get my hopes up too much!

Hi Patricia,
I actually don't know if they had scholarships, they are both from Central Europe so they would apply to a different fund than me (so it never came up).
1 of them finished top of his class and had won several awards although he had little experience as far as I know- on the other hand he read an LLM in European Law at Lund in the year before applying. The other girl had worked as a lawyer for a few years before applying although she had little experience with Human Rights.
I think it is very hard to guess what Lund want, although good grades and work experience can't hurt. Apparently they like people with language skills. The only thing you can do is wait unfortunately.
Sorry I can't be more help.
Let me know when you hear- I want to know when it is time to give up hope!!!!

I applied to Utrecht, Groningen and Warwick (I got places at Utrecht and Groningen and haven't heard off Warwick yet). I have already accepted my place at Lund as it was my 1st choice.
No idea about other offer from Lund. It is very possible that they haven't started with offers for the HRs and IP LLM but I have no idea to be honest.
I hope you hear soon,

I will continue to live in Copenhagen. It's only 45mins by train and I have an apartment which I share with my boyfriend (who is danish). I'm kind of hoping that I'll make some friends that won't mind me crashing on their floor if there's a party.
Are you going to accept the offer? Was it for the HRs or the HRs and IP?
Congratulations on your place.

I was accepted to the new programme - International Human Rights and International Labour Rights. I haven't accepted the offer yet - I'm still mulling it over. If I do accept, I was hoping to live in Copenhagen as well, but can't figure out whether I would be allowed to do so as I would only have a Swedish residence permit. Any suggestions?

stephb: Re: Master Degree in Law of Human rights

Amy,
It really depends where you come from. Assuming you are from an EU country then you just need to have a certain amount in your bank account to get a temporary residence permit- I think around 50000DKK (but it could have changed)- this money doesn't have to be there permanently (for example you can get your parents to transfer the money to you, get a copy of the bank statement and then give it back).
On the otherhand I wouldn't suggest living in Copenhagen- living cost are much higher than in Sweden, especially re. rent . Additionally if you aren't entitled to the danish grant (SU) or the Swedish grant then you won't get reduced train fare-955dkk a month reduced and1580 dkk not reduced.
Of course I'm not trying to put you off. It would be great for me to have someone to get the train with!!!
Let me know what you think,
Steph

The deadline for this expired on 15th February. If you already applied for a scholarship, then you just need to wait. Both scholarships are from separate organisations and they probably wait to hear if you were accepted before they make a final decision.
I hope that helps,

I also have been accepted (LLM in Human Rights Law). Lund University sent me an e-mail on 3rd of May. I've decided to accept their offer. Could you please let me know about accommodation details, prices etc. I know that Lund estimated monthly cost of living expenses is around 7000 SEK, but I'm hoping to reduce it. I'm willing to share an accommodation. If you know anything about anyone willing to rent less expensive flat or room please let me know. See you guys pretty soon!

I haven't heard anything either, and I've kind of given up. Even if I were to get a second round offer, I would have needed a scholarship to afford to live in Europe, and I am presuming that if I didn't make the first round, I wouldn't have been nominated for a scholarship. Thanx for the info.I hope we can hear from them by the end of this month. That will be cool.Im just wondering if there are any other people admitted for the labour programme, seems like most people are 4 intellectual ppty.Im also bothered by the fact that the process has taken rather too long, everyone is in a check of some sort.I heard that this time round they got the biggest number of applicants.Perharps that explains the delay coz they must have gotten overwhelmed. In the mean time, lets keep waiting and hope for the best.

Hi, everyone! At last i also received an offer from Lund for LLM in HRs and IP. I already decided to accept the offer from Essex university, UK, then i suddenly received e-mail from Lund. Lund was my first priority, so i'm really happy and decided to accept it. But i still have some questions, i read on Lund website that studying starts August 31, but August 21 it's going to be some kind of meeting, but arrival day is August 16. Are you going to come so early? Has someone applied for Orientation program and Swedish language course week for International students? Have they really accepted just 15 students for LLM in HRs and IP? BUt it looks like that first semester all three LLM programs have similar subjects.
See you soon, Lea

Congratulations Lea.
When did you hear from them? This means that you can live with your boyfriend I guess?
I think the pages you got the info from were the International Students pages. I think this is just for 'exchange students' but it might be an idea to ask Hanna to check. The official letters I got from Lund say that registration is 31st August and doesn't mention anything before then.
The first semester subjects are exactly the same for all HRs subjects. They usually only admit around 15 students for HRs and IP and according to the list I have they only admitted 12 this year.
Congratulations again!

hello,

I have some question about the LLM Programme in HR at the Lund University. I read az its homepage, that there : "Lunnd University is a state university, and according to the Swedish legislation it is not allowed to charge the students for the courses.
However, students have to pay an obligatory membership fee to the Students Association, totalling approximately 300 SEK per semester "
Does it go for foreign students (EU) as well??
And what are the criteria at the application. I mean which students are favoured? I have a master degree at the best hungarian iniversity and I study there actually as a Phd student. What are my chances?
thanks

Hi Satine,
EU students don't have to pay fees to go to uni in Sweden but they do have to pay the 300 SEK to the students' association (300sek is nothing when you consider that you get a free education).
As far as I can 't tell there isn't anything that they look for apart from a solid interest in Human Rights. I think they just look at each student's individual merits and make an assessment on that. I only have an LLB but I have done quite a lot of Human Rights based work experience. I know in the past they have admitted students that have worked as lawyers with little, if any, HRs experience and they have accepted people on mainly their academic qualifications.
In other words the criteria is a good statement of purpose.
I think one thing they will wonder about is why you want to do an LLM when you are already doing a Phd. Is your Phd on something HRs related?
I hope that this was helpful.

Hi everybody,

I've just received an email from Lund telling me I was accepted for the LLM at Human Rights and Intellectual Property Rights, but I didn't receive the letter by post yet. My main concern now is get the visa (I'm from Brazil), since it takes 8 weeks (!!) to be delivered. It's SO good to see people who is going to be my classmates. I've applied for accomodation and orientation guide and everything, so i'm reall in doubt about when to arrive in Lund. August 16th? 21th? 31th? Any idea? Does someone know when they let you know if there's accomodation for you? Have I any chances being number 26100?
A big hug to all,
Ulysses.

Hi,Steph! I received e-mail with offer from Lund on Wednesday (14 June). But yesterday i received another e-mail from Hanna about scholarship. She wrote that today she'll send my letter of acceptance by mail, so i hope to receive it this week. I'm really happy to be admitted and yes, i'm going to live with my boyfriend in Malmo. So we'll be able to meet on our way to Lund in the train. You are right i read pages for International exchange students, but they mentioned also master students. In scholarship letter (which i received as e-mail attachment) introductory course in Swedish is mentioned. It's written compulsory participation. Have you heard anything about it?
Lea.

I think the Swedish course is just compulsory for the scholarship people- although I would like to learn Swedish. I couldn't find the link though. Can you send it to me?
Shouldn't we continue this conversation on Yahoogroups?

Hi, Steph! the link wasn't mentioned in the scholarship letter, it was just written that introductory course in Swedish is organized by Folkuniversitetet. Do you speak Danish?
I joined Yahoo group too, see you there.

dambrozi: Master Degree in Law of Human rights

Hi,
My name is Ranyta Yusran and I come from Indonesia. I've been accepted in the international human rights law program in Lund university. But I'm a bit confused now since I cannot track down my housing application progress in the University's website (my name is not in it and I've already sent the pre-registration form) neither the faculty administrator nor the RWI administrator can help me in this matter. Up untill now, I haven't got a place to stay in Lund (I've also had put announcement in the Bopoolen website but I haven't got any reply). Do you guys have any suggestion on this issue?
Thank you

Hi everyone!
I am a 4th year student majoring in economics. I am thinking of applying for the international human rights programme in Lund University. I'd like to learn whether only students with very high GPAs are accepted. My cumulative GPA is about 2.90, what are yours? Do you think that my GPA is low? I do not have any publications, I have written a few articles so far, but they haven't been published given that I am still an undergraduate student. I wonder what my chances are of being accepted.
Thanks in advance,
Seyhan.
