LL.M. Part time job

Hi all,

I will take full-time LL.M. (NYU) this year.

Is it possible to combine LL.M. with part time job (18 hours per week) with one of international law firms?

Thank you for replies!

Regards,
Ceci

I am assuming you are an international student on a F-1 Visa?

Short answer is no. You cannot work while you are studying on a student visa. The only exception is if you work inside the school. I don't think an international law firm would qualify for that.

In any case, you will be studying so hard that you will be glad if you have time to sleep!

Good luck!

I think it might be manageable -- naturally depending on how efficient you are and what grades you are aiming at. A couple of my LLM friends are doing externships at courts and agencies and that seems to be working out.

I totally depends on how much you are used to work while being in school and how efficient you are. I was always able to work throughout my schooling. Also, if your English is fluent then law school in the US is not that hard (at least I didn't think so). However, I do not think you would have much time for socializing or anything else really if you worked 20 hours a week. Plus I assume classes are mandatory at your school, so I would be careful not to miss any class time because of work. But the work experience would be very valuable if you are thinking about getting a job in the US later.

How easy/difficult is it to get a part-time job in Law School itself? How well/poorly do they pay?

It's pretty easy to get a university job. I would recommend getting a research assistant position so you can decide your own schedule. The pay is minimum wage, so about $8 an hour.
