It means It is actually possible to rent accommodation prior to the semester start date. For example if you want to travel through Holland or sth.
I indicated the 25th Aug option, but bear in mind that UvA won't necessarily find you a room, as they just submit your application to a renting company.
Either way, it sux because from what my friends from Holland tell me I understand prices of accommodation are far lower than the one stated in this offer. Besides it's not even a campus we're talking about, just random flats throughout Amsterdam.

I applied in dec 2008, Admitted in January 2009,
i got the paper (admission) by post in mid january.

I confuse coz they told me in attachment that I must send all the copy of passport before July 1, 2009.
do you all do the same? send copy of passport, housing etc?

This is my last email from Amsterdam:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
PLEASE DO NOT RETURN THIS MAIL A SECOND TIME IF YOU ALREADY RECEIVED IT. OTHERWISE THIS CAN CAUSE A FAILURE IN YOUR APPLICATION!

Dear student,

We are happy to welcome you as a student in our school. In order to complete the administrative process both admitted and provisionally admitted students should read this email and its attachments carefully.

Housing information and “application for accommodation” form.

Authorisation for Temporary Residence (M.V.V.). Deadline 1 Juli 2009.

Please do note that Applications for MVV’s will be processed only if the fee of € 438,- is transferred. We will not apply for your visa if you are not yet fully admitted. Please inform us if you cannot hand in all documents before June 1st.

Course registration. Deadline 1 August 2009

Students have to choose elective courses within their specialization. These elective courses can be found in the current course catalogue on http://www.studiegids.uva.nl/sgs/WebSite_en

For the first semester you register for courses by filling out a course registration form. This form, together with instructions, will be sent to you mid July.

If you register after the set deadline, participation in your elective courses can not be guaranteed.

Academic Calendar –> see attachment

The timetable for the first semester will be available beginning- mid August. You will be informed of this by email. You will receive a course catalogue upon arrival, in which you also find practical information on studying at the Amsterdam Law School.

During your stay in Amsterdam you can expect to spend between € 800 and € 1,300 per month on living expenses. This does not include tution fee. See also: http://www.studeren.uva.nl/finance/object.cfm/3F4C3C60-20FF-4D79-939E2173821E961A

Without proof of sufficient finances the Amsterdam law School will not stand surety for you, and will not apply for your MVV.

Hello everyone!!!

My name is Grisselle. I'm from Panama and I'll be attending the LLM in International and European Law (PIL).

Mr_Jakarta: I'm confused, too. The problem is that tomorrow is the deadline and the haven't replied yet my email. I'm not sure how the health and liability insurance thing works. I thought I can look for something once I'm in Amsterdam.

Also, I'm a bit concern about housing. I think I'll start to look for something because if I don't get one with the ALS (in 2 months class will start!) then it'll be problematic. Any suggestions to where I can look (websites etc,)?

Btw, it seems that we don't have a facebook group. I was looking for it last time and didn't found anything. Any volunteer?

Thanks in advanced.

Hi all,

Have any of you received a letter of acceptance to the ALS? I have not received anything besides an email stating that I got accepted into the LL.M. program. I applied in May.

The only thing that I received was the international student magazine from the undergraduate university. Based on earlier posts, I suppose that I need to be in Amsterdam by the 25th? Is there any special orientation that we need to attend before classes start? Did they send a book list?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hello All,

I also did not get any accommodation although I returned the form on the same morning as I received it. I am starting this think the UvA is a but unorganised and I submitted a last minute application to Tilburg (on Tuesday) which was accepted (yesterday) so now I do not know what to do as housing is guarenteed there.

I have joined your FB groub BTW; if your thinking of renting an entire house, I'm in!!!

Hello,

I did not register for the courses yet as I am not sure if I'm still going (having no where to live is quite a disadvantage). Furthermore, I am going for the EU Business Law course so cannot help you.

I didn't register for the courses neither, but I will in a couple of days (EU Business law too!).

Indeed Miss S, but this causes me a problem. I would prefer to go to Amsterdam but (again) having nowhere to live is a big negative. On the off chance, I emailed Tilburg on TUESDAY (as they offer an LLM in International Buisness Law), they told me to send my application within one week (by the 14th July) and they would consider it. I FedEx'ed it the next day and they emailed me on THURSDAY to say they has received it. I then got an email on FRIDAY (yesterday) to say Id been accepted and to apply for housing - guarenteed for international students!! Now, although its clearly not Amsterdam, they seem to be more organised and I would have housing. I heard from someome else they they are also on a waiting list for housing in Amsterdam and they would hear back in SEPTEMBER. So now I don't really know what to do...Amsterdam would be my 1st choice, but given the circumstances; I dont really know what to do.

What do you think (anyone)?

All of you make valid points, however I think that I made a good choice with UvA and I'm going to stick with it. At this point I have no desire to deal with more applications, especially since I've already rejected offers from other universities to which I applied. That said, I am concerned with the lack of organization that I've experienced so far with UvA.

I still haven't received any official paperwork from the University after calling and emailing several times. I only have an email stating that I've been accepted; nothing else. In any case, I plan to make the most of my time in Amsterdam. It is a wonderful place and I'm sure I'll benefit from being there for a year. Having lived in Europe before, I guess I'm a bit used to this nonchalant attitude.

The housing issue is not as big a concern as there are a plethora of agencies and private avenues available. I just hope that is unorganization is not reflective of the LL.M. program as a whole.

Hi,

You may find the following housing agencies helpful; some of which were offered previously by members of the group.

1. De Key- http://www.dekey.nl/studenten/short-stay-facilities/

2. Duwo- http://www.duwo.nl/?id=1751&ch=ENG

3. Amsterdam Weekly (Housing) - http://www.amsterdamweekly.nl/content/view/77/145/

4. Craigslist- amsterdam.craigslist.org/search/roo?query=amsterda…

5. www.clickflatshare.co.uk/Amsterdam

6. Expatrentals- www.xpatrentals.com/

You may also find the following sites helpful in finding a room/housing:

7. Student Union ASVA- www.asva.nl

8. Amsterdam International Student Network- www.isn-amsterdam.nl

9. SRVU (Dutch Only)- www.srvu.org

10. Foreign Student Service- www.foreignstudents.nl

11.Kamernet.nl- www.kamernet.nl

12. www.studentenkamers.nl

13. Students for Students- www.sfshousing.nl

14. Direct Wonen- www.directwonen.nl

I plan on arriving around the 20th of August, and I probably won't sign a lease until the first of September. In the meantime, I would suggest that people without housing find a hostel (there are many --do a simple Amsterdam hostels google search) to stay in for the first couple of nights.

Amsterdam is a place where you really need to be there, meet the prospective landlord, and see the place for yourself before signing anything. A few days before classes start should be ample time to find a place provided you have a "game plan." That is, start contacting prospective renters at this time and if possible set up meeting times for when you arrive -- It may be a bit early still.

Some rentals are through agencies, so you may have to pay a commission/agent fee, while others are directly with the owner. In any event, make sure before signing anything that you will be able to "register" the apartment with the appropriate agency. Registering the apartment makes it legit with the law, so always ask about that possibility (for non-school sponsored housing).

I hope this information is helpful. I've joined the Facebook group as well. I look forward to meeting y'all in September!

Got an email yesterday from UvA saying they received one of my reference letters, but no application! Gah! Been on the phone with admin, and was told I may (or may not) be able to fire off the documents today. I paid the €100 back in April, so that combined with my reference letter should prove I sent the application, but it was lost in the mail. What do you guys think?

This has caught my completely by surprise. I was blissfully unaware of any problems with my candidacy, and now I'm scrambling.

Anyone else here submitted a late application and been accepted? What is the projected intake for LLM students this September?

An online application form, 2 reference letters (although I only submitted one), passport copy, motivation letter, copy of diploma and grades verified by the university - pretty standard really.

I would advise anyone who is looking for a university last minuite to apply now (as they gave me till the 14th to submit my application). So you contact them today; they may still be able to help you out. PM me if you want the email of the helpful lady I was in contact with.

I got this:

Dear Michael,
we have also more than 150 law students coming to the law faculty alone each year, dispite the housing situation, all of them finding accomodation. The housing situation in Amsterdam is different than in Tilburg, like New York or London is also more difficult than other places. This is partly beacuse of the attractiveness of these cities. Again, I can't change the situation (by the way, it is the same for Dutch students). Of course I would love to welcome you as a student of the Amsterdam Law School in September, but I cannot at this point guarantee you housing. We will however assist you in finding housing, if the waiting list doesn't get you housing,
kind regards,
Jikke Verheij

So this is what I understand from Michael post:
1. There is a waiting list
2. If waiting list fail, they will help you
The question here is (as Shary said) when??? We are supposed to be there for the introduction thing of our faculty-programme (27th of August), that is to say, we have to arrive there the 26th at the latest which means in one month and 11 days!!!
In the general email they said: "We will put your name on a waiting list for a room. If we get cancellations we might still be able to offer you a room. In the coming months up to September, you may receive a room offer by e-mail." September?? Come on!!! we have to be there before September. Honestly, they should start classes middle September like other schools.

Although the housing situation is a bit grim, michael's mail gives me a glimmer of hope.
I've accepted the fact that I'll have to find a place to stay after my arrival and am looking forward to the dreadful nights at a hostel.
In my opinion UvA are not really focused on this quite significant issue. I mean, come on, we're all on the waiting list, the rule is - you have 3 days to respond to a housing offer, or you lose your spot. Do your math and you'll find there's like 1% chance there will be any houses from now on.
With the 'lucky' list announced a month ago, in order to get a room, there have to be 10 people that rejected it. And they pretend that's real!
My personal feeling is that there were never really any rooms, and they just make up that 'waiting list' every year to keep everyone calm.
But I think with their assistance we'll manage. All I ask is that they're honest :)))

I'm disappointed in how lightly they are taking care of this issue...and they are so concerned with the fact that some people didn't register yet for the courses...come on!! If I don't find where to stay I won't attend to the courses whether I registered them or not.
In my previous experience living in the Netherlands, finding private accommodation is sometimes preferable if you want to save money. I wouldn't worry too much about accommodation through the university unless you're coming from so far away it's practical, or if you're unable to arrive early to search yourself.

Keep in mind we have this thread. If more than a few of us find ourselves in the same situation we can band together and find a private flat.

I think you don't need the student number in order to register courses, as there's no " * " next to it.
I am very concerned however with the credits;
The maximum amount of credits per semester is 40 EC
and the compulsory courses for the 1st semester constitute 35 EC.
Which means there's only 5 left for electives.
While I want to take both european contract and free movement of persons which are 15 EC altogether. So I wrote them a letter yesterday and am still expecting a reply. Hopefully they'll say today.
I have to say they haven't been the quickest to reply...

90 (40 + 40 + 10) or 80 (40 + 30 + 10) I think was the maximum
there was a pdf document with regulations that I found on their site, but I've lost it

Guys, this is email from officer about courses registration, it been in my spam folder. hahahaha

--------------------------------------------------
Dear students,

I seems that a lot amongst you think they cannot register for courses because they cannot fill in a studentnumber and password. Please do go to the web page: http://www.student.uva.nl/lawstudents/timetables.cfm and complete the form which is on the top of the page. You do NOT need to fill in your studentnumber or password. Only fields marked with an asterix have to be completed. Registration must be completed before August 1. Failing to register means that you won't be able to attend the classes!!

Please remember, you need to register for both compulsory and elective courses!!

Received an email yesterday containing MVV steps (which I don't need), Academic Timetables, and a Housing form. Seems to me like they've accepted my application. I think. I'm not even sure into which stream I've been put into.

I will basically sort housing out at the eleventh hour - has anyone else decided on private flat hunting? If so, drop me a line. My plan is to arrive as early as I can, stay in a hostel, and try to set myself up as close to the campus as possible for around €300/month. So if anyone's looking for a roommate - holler at your boy.

Hey,

I hope you will be admitted, but you have to know that receiving this forms doesn't mean you are. They will email you to tell whether or not you are admitted (Ireceived the forms before the email).

Concerning the flat hunting: When do you think going to Amatserdam?

@ mccgold & Miss S.
I have the same game plan. Arriving on the 25th and God help me :)
I don't want to ruin things for you mccgold, but so far I've asked many people for prices on housing and all said 300/month is the absolute minimum and it's not that close to the center (where the faculty is). I have set a tight housing budget myself :)
But I'm sure we'll manage. Besides transport is pretty decent in Amsterdam so distances shouldn't be a problem.

@ Miss S.: Oh, okay. I emailed to check on that since it seemed a bit odd to me. Let's hope they don't find my constant stream of questions too annoying. When do they usually confirm enrolment?

@ bullokk: I heard that €300/month was the minimum as well. And like you said, living somewhere like Pijp, Westerpark, Vondelpark, or Noord wouldn't be too bad considering the public transportation choices. Have you had any luck so far finding a private room?

Personally, I think some of us should band together and try to find a whole flat for rent - then simply split the cost. We'd have far more leverage with a landlord if there were 3-4 of us viewing together as opposed to a single student looking for a room. We'd get more choice, too.

I'll submit my housing application today, but I doubt it'll do any good.

two thumbs up for teaming up :)
we have a similar discussion in the facebook group;
besides a room on its own is twice more expensive than a room in a shared flat; I saw quite a few decent 3 room flats on different sites, starting from 1100 eur/month;
I've been sharing room with mates for more than five years, any single room now would seem like a palace to me :)))

Bullock, who are you on the facebook group?

Mcgold you are now in the group. About the email: they emailed me less than ten days after I sent my application. But how it comes you didn't have a reply yet, wasn't the application deadline on 15th may? If I were you, I would call them (cause like I said I am still waiting for a reply to an email I sent on 30th june...).

About the housing, let's continue the discussion in the group!

Thanks for the add into the group. The reason I haven't heard anything yet is that my application was lost in the mail. All the school received was one of my reference letters and my administration fee; nothing else made it through. I had to quickly prepare and send all my documents a few weeks ago, so they're still reviewing my application. At least I hope so.

Hi to everyone who has been posting in this forum. I am new to LLM Guide. I have been accepted to UVA to read for the LLM in international and european law; international trade and investment law track. I like most of you am waiting on word from the University on the Housing situation. Has anyone received any email confirming accommodation? I sent an email to the University yesterday seeking a status update but no response has been forthcoming. Generally I find the Administration takes a while to respond to emails. Is this just a problem for me or is this the general consensus.
Also, for those who need the MVV, has the University contacted you to say whether the application has been made yet? I sent all the required documents and the fee; the university acknowledged receipt of the same but I've heard nothing since.
