KCL/UCL/Aberdeen/Edinbourg or Sussex?
Hi!Sat Jun 06, 2009 04:40 PM It's great to share the ideas and experiences with you. I have to make a decision about a program on Criminal Law. I have conditional offers from all of these universities. I know that they have some advantages and disadvantages. Firstly, I was just thinking about KCL but now after reading on it more, I have some doubts about this. Could you help me about this dilemma? Thanks, Burcu |

Among KCL/UCL/Aberdeen/Edinburgh and Sussex you should definitely choose one of the first two. Between UCL and KCL you cannot choose wrong. UCL is ahead in the rankings in this moment.

=) I have been thinking about the KCL and UCL. However while so many people are agree with KCL is better, other tell that UCL has a higher place in the rankings. And the third idea in this field is that they are nearly the same... I know nobody which has participated one of these programs so I wanted to ask you. Searching from the google by writing the names of the scholars may not provide a sufficient knowledge. Therefore I'm still thinking about this...

Well… Mon Jun 08, 2009 10:58 PM I know three graduates from UCL and my “Boss” instead graduated from KCL. All three UCL graduates are enthusiastic about UCL and are currently working in top-tier law firms, including in London. My “Boss” (although KCL graduate) highly appreciated and supported my choice for UCL. I am leaving a top-tier law firm for an LLM at UCL – and leaving such firms makes sense only if leave for the best ... Maybe a look at Wikipedia may help you choosing: “The [ UCL ] law faculty in particular is 'tipped by insiders as the best law faculty in the United Kingdom'” :-) Where are you from? |

I'm from Turkey and I'm planning to have an academic career as a scholar in a university after I will return back.

Curcu, if you aim only at an academic career maybe you should go for Oxbridge. It is not that Oxford/Cambridge are better, but their “brand” is very helpful in that field. I know people who for information attended courses at the big three London universities and were convinced that they were better, but opted for accepting Oxbridge offers exclusively because of the title as they wanted to become professors.Wed Jun 10, 2009 11:42 PM If Oxbridge is not possible consider that UCL offers a special course for law teachers. |

Don't discount Edinburgh if you are still thinking. Many of the graduates of the LLM programme remain in academia. The criminology MsC programme is very popular and the faculty running it are extremely dedicated to the students, many of whom go on to do PhDs...several of whom are my colleagues.Wed Jun 24, 2009 11:19 AM Best of luck. |

Wed Jun 24, 2009 11:35 AM Curcu, if you aim only at an academic career maybe you should go for Oxbridge. It is not that Oxford/Cambridge are better, but their “brand” is very helpful in that field. I know people who for information attended courses at the big three London universities and were convinced that they were better, but opted for accepting Oxbridge offers exclusively because of the title as they wanted to become professors. If one's aim is to get into academia, I really don't get the emphasis on "brand" of one's school. I have been asking various law departments on what they look for in hiring academics, and the consensus always seems to be the quality of one's (i) publications and (ii) doctoral thesis. As long as one gets into a decent law school, I think it really does boil down to the above two factors. |

Thank you for all the replies. Still I'm trying to decide. Fri Jun 26, 2009 10:12 AM According to my researches on the internet and the coversations between the lecturers in Edinbourgh, Edinbourg may be a great choice, too. However the tricky point here is the program's content. It's an MSc so I have doubts about it. Cheers, |

Fri Jun 26, 2009 10:58 AM Thank you for all the replies. Still I'm trying to decide. Just out of curiosity, what caused you to have doubts about KCL? Criminal Law is not really my area of interest, but - from what little i know - King's does have a good criminal law faculty - Alan Norrie et al - whose research is reasonably cutting edge. |

Actually I have no doubts about KCL but I have doubts about living in London; expensiveness, conditions, etc. On the other hand, KCL has a great reputation about criminal law and according to their website they have good courses in this program.

If you are interested in rankings, it is UCL. They are much higher than KCL in the world rankings. Look up the Shanghai and Times rankings which are the most used... UCL has a huge programme of extra lectures by emininent people every week which students can go to. They have just opened a centre for Criminal law. The first tier competitors in the UK are Oxford, Cambridge, UCL and the LSE. KCL is good, but UCL does have the edge internationally and in terms of programme (UCL has the largest LLM programme in the UK, by far)

john gale: I disagree whether with regards to ranking or the Criminal law choice.Tue Jun 30, 2009 08:21 AM Tier 1 is the UK is only Oxbridge followed by LSE, KCL and UCL (tier 2). The choice between the last 3 will depend on the area of specialization. For Criminal law, KCL has the edge. |

Ah, I get you. In terms of places to live, I much prefer Edinburgh to London too. I don't know maybe it's because I come from a big city myself, I much prefer not to be in one while studying. Edinburgh is really gorgeous, fell in love with the place the first time i lay eyes on it. |
