General or Specialized LL.M?!
Hello there .. I have been accepted into the LL.M program in LSE, UCL and U of T for this fall .. but after thinking thoroughly about so many factors i believe i will go for U of T. However, the only thing that keeps me thinking once again about LSE is that it offers specialized LL.Ms (including International Commercial Law which i would choose) unlike U of T which only offers a General LL.M .. so could anyone please advise me on whether this will make a difference when it comes to job hunting afterwards or not?? Good question, Eden. All things considered (and granted, I'm currently unemployed so you'll have to take my advice with a grain of salt), the choice really depends on what sort of law you want to do. If you feel that commercial law is your cup of tea, I'd go with the specialized LL.M. so you can demonstrate to prospective employers that you have a true desire to practice in that field. If, however, you feel as though you might not ultimately practice in this area, the general LL.M. might be a better option since a human rights law firm may not consider someone with a commercial law LL.M to be the best fit for their office, for instance.Wed Jul 15, 2009 05:59 PM Bottom line, if you know in your heart and soul that international commercial law is what you want to do, I'd specialize. |
