LLM Maritime Law?

Hi everyone,

I'm interested in getting an LLM in Maritime Law and was wondering if anyone can advise me regarding the competitiveness of the programs at the following schools and what my chances of being admitted would be:

- Tulane
- Southampton
- Bristol
- Oslo
- UCL
- Any other school you think I should consider

A little information about me: I'm currently an American JD student at University of Michigan. Will probably end up graduating with a 3.2, did not do journals or moot court. I did my undergraduate degree in Linguistics from UC San Diego and have a Certificat d'Etudes Politiques from IEP in Lyon. I am a dual US/EU(German) Citizen.

Let me know if any more information would be helpful.

I think Southampton and UCL are tougher than Tulane in regards of both admission and granting financial aid. No idea with the other options.

p.s., I've heard about Southampton's martime law LL.M. Doesn't look like a place I'd wanna go. But you may be different.

Southampton is very very good . I stayed there for a year as a visiting student and took some maritime law subjects such as carriage of goods by sea, admiralty law, international law of the sea. The environment and the teachers were excellent. I loved the place cause there are a lot of things to do in the city,,and for the mall was great and very entertaining hehe

Well, generally speaking if you are competent enough, the nature of this career itself comes out of that of other practices, especially in terms of income, given the average claims in maritime cases. But thing is, and it's what I've been struggling with...is that you have to establish yourself as very very specialised in this small circle of business, and that brings its own problems.

Hi PUCCA,

I've noticed that you've spoken highly of Southampton in several of your posts. Most of my friends who've studied there(and that's quite a few, ;) ) have mentioned the greater difficuilties of the courses they experienced at Southampton than maritime law institutions located elsewhere. Do you have any similar feelings?

No not at all. Maybe my experience was different because i was not a regular student but a visiting student. However i also did the tests and attended the lectures etc and well my experience was very good. Maybe i had good luck and very nice professors but i really have nothing to complain about,,,everyone was very helpfull,,at least that how i felt during the entire time there!

I thought that since i was a visiting student i would feel out of place but no i felt very welcomed and well the classes were sometimes difficult because of the material and also the language in my case,,,im used to the american accent so at the beginning the british accent was kinda confussing to me!

but well at the end everything turned out to be very good,,i got my certification and made some nice friends there :0)

What kind of programe do they have for visiting students? what's the difference between that and regular student?

visiting students dont get grades,,,,regular students do.

We only get a certification saying which subjects we took there and in my case it was a great thing because my main goal was to improve my English and also go to law school in a different country to experience a british university because my plan was to go afterwards to do my LLM in the UK and this is exactly what im going to do next month :)
