NYU Corporate Law LLM
Hello Everyone:Wed Oct 07, 2009 07:54 PM I am currently a third year law student at a Tier 1 (Top 50) Law School in the US, ranked in the top 25% of my class. I am interested in practicing Corporate Law upon my graduation but was looking into entering the Corporate Law LLM being offered by NYU School of Law straight from graduation. I have a couple of questions I was hoping people could help me with: 1. Is the Corporate Law LLM open to American Students? NYU's website says the program is "aimed primarily at international students" but I was just wondering if they do consider US law students. 2. With my stats, would I be at all competitive in gaining acceptance to the program? 3. How worthwhile or valuable is the Corporate Law LLM from NYU for a US law student? I've heard that for US law students, the Tax LLM is the only LLM worth the time and money and even then only from a select few schools. 4. Also, does Columbia have an LLM specifically in Business/Corporate Law? From what I have uncovered from my research, I thought they do not. If they do, however, I would also consider applying there. I would very much appreciate feedback on this as I am very interested in the program but cannot find adeqaute answers to my concerns. Thank you in advance!! [Edited by DDGM1112 on 07 Oct 2009] |

I do not know the answers to most of your questions. However I do know that Columbia does not offer a specialised LLM program. Its a generic one and you can pick the sujbjects you like. Sat Oct 10, 2009 07:01 PM If you know anything about the ADVANCED PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE IN LAW AND BUSINESS PROGRAM offerred by NYU, let me know. I am also interested in the Corporate Law LLM at NYU and was wondering if the APCLB program should be something that one should take up along with the LLM. |

Can someone please shed some light on the, more or less, things which will be required for a US student to be admitted to NYU’s Corporate Law LLM (i.e., need to be in Top 10%, need to have been part of LR or not, etc.)? Thu Oct 15, 2009 05:29 PM How would I fare in applying? Predictions please!! |

Hey guys,Thu Oct 29, 2009 04:10 PM How much importance do they give to class rank? I got above average from LSAC report. I have several publications. I have 5 years of work experience in a top law firm, ranked by IFLR, Financial Times, Legal 500 as Tier 1 in Europe. Additionally I have one year of experience as the head of legal affairs in a governmental position. I also arranged adjunct lecturer position in a well know university in my country after LL.M. I have two years of moot court experience in law school. All seems great so far but, my class rank is like 220 in a class of 500. What do you think ? Do you think NYU, CLS, HLS will just throw my application to trash ? |

Thu Oct 29, 2009 07:01 PM Hey guys, if you have several years of work experience in top level positions, as you do, then your low class rank would not matter that much. someone who has had just one or two years of work experience would need a better class rank to get in those schools. in columbia, they said that if you aren't in the top 10-15% of your class, you might have difficulty getting in if you don't have anything else in your application, which you do have anyway. |

Thank you for this. I am especially interested in CLS. I have already applied for the Early Review and been waiting with anxiety :) Do you think applying early makes a difference in my situation? As far as I know I am the only person who applied early in my country.

no info on early review, i didn't use it myself. CLS though seems to have a "checklist" of qualifications for applicants from every country. they know for example that applicants from the netherlands will most likely not have work experience, so they do not look for work exp among the dutch. so i suppose you will be evaluated based on the qualifications that applicants from your country commonly/usually have.

based on my questions to them, they said they accept everyone who is "meets their standards." like this year, they accepted lots from france, because there were lots from france who applied and were qualified.

ha, i realized no one has answered your questions yet. let me try: Fri Nov 06, 2009 03:41 PM I am currently a third year law student at a Tier 1 (Top 50) Law School in the US, ranked in the top 25% of my class. --- most of the LLMs i know (in CLS) aren't really JDs from tier 1 schools. 1. Is the Corporate Law LLM open to American Students? NYU's website says the program is "aimed primarily at international students" but I was just wondering if they do consider US law students. --- again most of the US JDs i know (and i know very few, since i'm in CLS) aren't really studying corporations. they're doing IP, tax, or some other specialized field. but if you have excellent creds, i don't see why they won't take you. 2. With my stats, would I be at all competitive in gaining acceptance to the program? --- i think so! 3. How worthwhile or valuable is the Corporate Law LLM from NYU for a US law student? I've heard that for US law students, the Tax LLM is the only LLM worth the time and money and even then only from a select few schools. --- not really sure. you should take a look at this post from ATL: abovethelaw.com/2008/07/the_value_of_an_llm_degree… --- see also the responses in this thread: abovethelaw.com/2008/01/open_thread_on_llm_degrees… 4. Also, does Columbia have an LLM specifically in Business/Corporate Law? From what I have uncovered from my research, I thought they do not. If they do, however, I would also consider applying there. --- they do not. there's no specialized LLM in cls. |
