Since this board is quite inactive these days and I am so bored of my exams and papers, I have a hypothetical scenario to ask. Fri Nov 13, 2009 03:35 PM Let's say if you got admitted to CLS with no financial aid, but in at NYU with a few aid (let's say 10 K or 20K). Which one would you rather go to?? and why?? I'd love to ask the same for Harvard but people seem inclined to choose Harvard over the above 2 schools unless any of them offered you a hefty amount or full scholarship. Cheers |

I'd choose Columbia.Fri Nov 13, 2009 04:55 PM Financial aid is not a decisive factor to me. I consider the LLM as a long term career investment. I am sure the amount spent with it will be returned in large proportion in the future working years. So my choice will be made on the basis of the reputation of the Law School and the academic quality of the program... --- |

So VERT, according to you Columbia's reputation beats NYU's? Bc it's Ivy League?Fri Nov 13, 2009 08:18 PM Is the quality of the courses&teaching really better at Columbia compared to NYU? Many of my friends have chosen NYU over Columbia when they've been admitted to both. Some have even gone to Chicago instead, claiming the courses there are better. Comments? |

In my opinion yes and I'd have no doubt in choosing.Sat Nov 14, 2009 10:57 AM I am an European and here the Columbia brand is definitely stronger that NYU... In addition, my specific area of interest is securities law. From what I've read and heard CLS is one of the strongest in this field... I didn't say CLS was better than Chicago. Chicago is obviously a great law school, also better than NYU in my opinion. Even though I would never go there because of the city and the weather... --- |

Here is the deal!!Sat Nov 14, 2009 11:38 AM Chicago - number oner for law and economics - posner, coase, etc.. Columbia - the best for corporate / securities law - coffee, goldschimdt, gilson, etc.. (Number one as regards to employment). NYU - top tier for tax. Also good in tbe above mentioned, but far from the suspects (CLS - CHI). |

I fully agree, it would be a luxurious problem to have to choose between Columbia and NYU... Mon Nov 16, 2009 08:39 PM VERT - is HLS your overall first choice? |

Do you know what Columbia meant by "final year of law school"?Mon Nov 16, 2009 09:30 PM In fact, I did not apply to early review as I'm in my final year of law school in France, but I had my first law degree two years ago. |

Mon Nov 16, 2009 10:09 PM I fully agree, it would be a luxurious problem to have to choose between Columbia and NYU... Honestly, I haven't thought much about it. I prefer to wait and see... From what I've heard HLS criteria may be quite "unexpected", but certainly I'll go there if admitted. I think it's just an offer one can't refuse lol. BTW, I did not apply to NYU because it's not highly ranked in securities law. But that does not mean I don't consider it to be among the best... --- |

Tue Nov 17, 2009 03:35 AM Do you know what Columbia meant by "final year of law school"? "final year of law school" means the final year of your first law degree, like an LLB or JD, as the case may be. i applied when i was in my final year of my (non-CLS) LLM and that was fine. |
