legalalien: Timing of UCL decisions

For general info, I received a letter in the post today indicating that my UCL application had been forwarded to the selectors and that I should receive a response by 11 December (offer, invitation to interview, request for further info, follow up response or rejection). My application completed following receipt of the second online reference on 27 October.

Obviously I'd be interested in how others' applications are progressing.

I have a problem with the online reference at UCL. At the time I submitted my app it was necessary to choose the option"email". However, one of my referee is an old guy a Superior Court Judge. Therefore, I believe he will not be able to enter on line. What should I do?

I think you'll need to ring admissions

Tel: +44 (0)20 7679 7742.

If you're living somewhere obscure / out of time zone let me know and I can give them a call and ask, but it may be easier for you to call so that they can deal with your specific record.

I note the website says to contact them if you haven't heard anything within 2 weeks after your application has completed.

fausto - I wouldn't worry yet - the letter I received was sent second class, so I was just lucky that it was delivered quite quickly. We've had quite a lot of industrial action / strikes by Royal Mail recently, these may have slowed down mail sorting etc.

Any news from UCL?

I applied via mail and so far I've not heard anything from them. I sent an e-mail asking for confirmation at least of safe receipt of my application... no reply.

Getting more and more nervous I must admit...

Is there anyone in the same situation?

graduate admissions operate a drop in service at the laws building on mondays-fridays from - if my memory serves me correctly - ten till one, and two till four thiry.

i haven't heard anything from ucl whatsoever, and my patience is wearing thin! i've tried calling them, but without success; and the only reason that i know this little snippet of information about their graduate admissions office is because i went to see them in person out of frustration last week. unfortunately i got there at thirty-one minutes past four :P i am now in the middle east, where i will be for the next couple of months and am have thus resigned myself to not hearing anything from ucl anytime this century!

guys one piece of advise

stop emailing or calling them...they wont answer any of your questions so far,,its too soon,,have patience!

when i applied last year (around October 24) i only heard from them around January, i mean the final decision. So believe me there is still some time left, be patient.

right now they must be handling with a lot of applications,,,they have lotssssssssssssssss every year and they also have to handle with their current students etc.

its a great university,,i really love it and im very very happy i chose this uni. The staff its extremely helpfull, the teaching quality is 5 stars and even when i had some visa problems the university helped and supported me so dont worry about them taking some extra weeks to get back to yu,,,they are quite busy but they will reply soon. Only call or email them if more than 2 months and a half have passed since you applied.

I got a letter from UCL a couple of days ago, as well, stating that a decision (at least a preliminary one) should be made by December 9th, 2009. Though it seems it does take long for mail to reach countries other than UK, as it took nearly 3 weeks to get here. So all of you who haven't gotten a response yet, I bet it was already sent but it just hasn't arrived yet.

Hi guys, brief update.

UCL wrote me again saying that my acknowledgement letter was sent on 30 Oct and I should receive a decision mid Dec.

Unfortunately, I have not received the acknowledgement letter and therefore I do not know if and when I will receive the decision!

Legalalien, our decision should be taken in the same period. Let me know we you get it as you are in London and it seems that your letters are delivered pretty earlier than mine. :(

Judy Law: Timing of UCL decisions

I sent an email to the faculty of law on Wednesday and asked a friend who is based in London to ring them. They told my friend that they sent my a confirming letter on 28 th October and decisions are usually sent out in the beginning of dec.

However this morning I got an email reply from the faculty of law. The woman said that my application was processed, a decision has been made and the admissions office will send me a letter shortly. It really scared me, I am wondering if a earlier decision is a bad sign...

Last week I got an offer from Nottingham but I didnt expect UCL would made decisions before December...

So I am thinking about talking to the admissions office and see if they can tell me the decision by email or send the letter by DHL, since I not even got the confirming letter. Do you guys think it ll be possible?

fausto - will certainly post if and when I get a decision! Really hope that it's soon - my inability to even get my LSE application to the under consideration phase is driving me mental, so I need cheering up (or not, as the case may be - at least something concrete).

judylaw - I assume that they can't tell you over the phone? presumably they'll update the online status once they post the letter out, even if they don't alert you to the fact it has been updated?

Thanks everybody I am working now and struggling to get focus on my work again hahaha

As I said before, on 18/11 I sent an email to the adress given by fausto llm-law.... asking if my application was received (at this time I didnt get the confirmation letter). On 20/11 I got an email from a kind lady called Laura Parrett who said my application was processed and a decision has been made. So i asked if she could email me the decision letter and she told me that all the letters are sent by the admissions office so I should talked to them. She also gave me the Mrs. Thomas´ adress from the admissions office, but he havent replied my email email so far...
Over the weekend I saw on UCL website that they cant email you the decision letter but they can fax you if you request. So this morning I called the admissions office and asked them to fax me the letter, and teh guy just said OK and faxed me in one hour.

ps: sorry abou any mistake but I am in a rush

My application is still under consideration and a decision should be issued within the end of the week.

Hey there! I am new here, but have the same problem - need to wait too long. I submitted my application to UCL (as well as to some other unis) somewhere in the beginning of November, and they received my second reference letter on November 6. A week ago Ms Jane Ha emailed me that they need some additional documents, and I sent them this Monday. This morning I have been noticed that everything is OK, and my application is going to be passed on to the Graduate Tutor for consideration.
Well, I have to mention that I have also applied for the Chevening scholarship, and this double-waiting is killing me)) I guess I will get some information about Chevening in February, and the final decision will be taken in early March. So I just try to have as many stuff to do as possible to keep patient)))

Churchill: Timing of UCL decisions

Hi guys,

I have also received an e-mail from UCL recommending an offer. I am awaiting a letter in the post officially confirming this, as apparently, the e-mail does not constitute an offer. I was very surprised and happy to receive a reply so soon, especially as I only applied 2 weeks ago!

However, I noticed that the application number quoted on the e-mail is different from the application number on previous correspondence. So this has left me worried that they may have me confused with somebody else. Judy Law, can you confirm whether the application number on your e-mail when you received the offer was the same or different to the one you were given when you applied? Thanks in advance.

I think the "recommendation" thing is a reflection of the fact that the law faculty doesn't have the authority to make formal offers. In practice I suspect it's decision is the clincher though, and that any additional checking by the graduate admissions team is a formality / designed to ensure that papers are in order, etc.

I've just had my official offer letter come through today. Very happy.

I also have offers from Durham, Nottingham and Warwick. I'm just wondering though, is UCL clearly better than the above 3 and worth the extra expense in tuition fees and living cost, because someone told me that there is hardly any difference between UCL and Durham. Can anyone offer any advice?

When I first rang UCL they said I should except an answer in mid-January. Then I emailed Jane Ha and she said I should wait a week to get a response. She was pretty accurate I must say, because a week later I received the offer from her, and so did my fiancee. So, based on my experience, if she said 11 December, you'll probably hear from pretty soon. I know waiting sucks... I've been there. In fact, I was so anxious about this LLM that I've been looking at universities since last December. It was only a year later that I was finally put out of my misery and received an offer of a place.

Damn. Just received a hard copy letter rejecting my application.

I guess the world won't end. Just goes to show, though, that it's not all about marks (for the record I went to a respectable Commonwealth university, have an A+ average and came first in my year. And have 15 years' private practice experience... (bitter, moi?). I suspect that it may be more difficult to get a part time place than a full time one - and clearly there are some non-academic criteria of some kind!

Will have to make a plan B. Congrats to those of you who have been accepted - best of luck for your move to London and do mail me if you want any advice on London law firms!

I haven't got my official letter, but I've emailed the admissions office and they'll see if it's possible to send a copy off to me by email rather than regular post. The recent postal strikes in the UK have left a huge backlog that I'm not quite sure if it's been cleared already. For instance, Aberdeen's offer letter was posted off to me on 24th November, but it only arrived today! Before the strike, I remember ordering copies of the prospectus and it arrived about a week later. The backlog therefore obviously still remains.

I also have an offer letter from QM dated 6th November, but I received it on 1st December (Guess I'm lucky indeed... or maybe it's you that has been having a lot of bad luck...). Considering it was my first offer, I was so desperate that I rang the admissions office and asked how long I had to answer to them. They said I should answer as soon as possible, but they were aware of the postal strikes so there was no need to run like hell. I logged onto their system only last week to decline the offer and it was still working. If you want to accept the offer, I'd try logging on at first. If it doesn't work, ring them and explain the situation... they can't deny the strikes and the backlog that has been impairing deliveries throughout the entire UK (and world for overseas residents like myself).
